THE CUP OF THE LORD AND THE CUP OF DEMONS / 1 CORINTHIANS 10:21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 10:21

Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.

Guarding Your Heart: The Cup of the Lord and the Cup of Demons

Our choices matter in our daily walk with God. In 1 Corinthians 10:21, the Apostle Paul issues a stark and serious warning to the church: “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.” This verse calls us to examine where our deepest loyalties lie.

The Meaning of Communion

To understand this warning, we must first look at what the Lord’s Table represents. Participating in the Lord’s Supper is a profound act of spiritual remembrance and unity. Just as sharing the bread and the cup represents sharing in Christ’s sacrificial death, it reflects a deep, personal commitment to Him.

When we talk about “participation in the blood of Christ,” we are speaking of believers sharing in the spiritual salvation provided by Christ’s death. The Bible does not teach that the bread and the drink actually become Christ’s physical body and blood. Instead, these symbols and the occasion itself are beautiful tools to remind us of Christ’s sacrifice and the eternal benefits He secured for us on the cross.

Divided Loyalties

Paul’s message to the Corinthians was clear: you cannot mix the holy with the profane. You cannot claim the salvation of Christ on Sunday and dally with spiritual darkness, idolatry, or worldly compromise during the week.

Drinking from the “cup of demons” doesn’t always look like an overt occult ritual. In our modern world, it often looks like:

  • Prioritizing worldly wealth and status over kingdom values.
  • Feeding our minds with entertainment that honors sin.
  • Relying on toxic behaviors, gossip, or deceit to get ahead.
  • Allowing habits or addictions to take the place of God in our hearts.

God desires our exclusive devotion. He is a jealous God—not out of insecurity, but out of a fierce, protective love for your soul. He knows that trying to live in two different worlds will ultimately fracture your spirit.

Choosing the Right Table

Every day, we are invited to sit at a table. We can choose the table of the world, which offers fleeting pleasures but leaves us spiritually empty and compromised. Or, we can choose the Lord’s Table, which offers grace, truth, and the fullness of eternal life.

Examine your heart today. Are there areas where you are trying to balance both cups? Pour out the compromises, step away from the tables of compromise, and pull your chair up to the Lord’s Table, where you are truly known, loved, and redeemed.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the profound sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and the spiritual salvation He secured for us on the cross. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my loyalties to be divided, trying to hold onto the things of this world while reaching for Your grace.

Search my heart today, Lord. Reveal any compromise, idolatry, or ungodly habit that I am tolerating in my life. Give me the strength and the courage to pour out any cup that does not honor You. Cleanse me and renew a right spirit within me.

Help me to live a life of complete devotion, fully participating in the blessings of Your covenant. May my choices, my words, and my thoughts reflect that I belong solely to You. Keep me anchored at Your table, satisfied by Your presence alone.

In Jesus’ holy name, we pray, Amen.
