START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 1 Corinthians 6:19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
Living as a Living Sanctuary: Honoring God with Your Body
When you look in the mirror, what do you see? You might see your height, your hair color, or areas you wish you could change. But God looks at you and sees a sacred space. As a Christian, your body is the personal, living dwelling place of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11). You are not an accidental collection of cells, nor do you belong to yourself. You are a temple.
The Price of Ownership
We often hear the cultural phrase, “It’s my body, I can do what I want with it.” But Scripture challenges this mindset directly.
- You are not your own: 1 Corinthians 6:19 explicitly tells us we do not own ourselves.
- Bought with a price: Jesus paid a ransom for us with His own life (Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45; 1 Timothy 2:6; Hebrews 9:15) to free us from sin and bring us into a personal relationship with God.
- A royal transfer: Because of this costly ransom, the ultimate title deed of your life belongs entirely to Jesus.
Guarding the Gates
Because the Holy Spirit lives in you, your body must never be defiled by impurity or evil. This means keeping a strict guard over what enters your mind and heart.
- Thoughts: Rejecting immoral patterns and toxic internal monologues.
- Desires: Aligning your passions with God’s word rather than selfish lusts.
- Actions: Avoiding behaviors, habits, or environments that compromise your spiritual walk.
- Images: Guarding your eyes against media or explicit materials that distort God’s design.
Practical Stewardship Beyond the Spiritual
Honoring God with your body (1 Corinthians 6:20) is not just about avoiding sexual immorality or deep spiritual sins. It also includes caring properly and responsibly for your physical body in every aspect.
True stewardship means getting adequate rest, eating food that nourishes you, managing stress, and avoiding substances or habits that cause harm. When we neglect our physical health, we make it harder to do the work God has called us to do. Taking care of your health is a physical action, but it is ultimately an act of spiritual worship.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus Christ to pay the ultimate ransom for my life, freeing me from sin and bringing me into a deep, personal relationship with You. Forgive me for the times I have lived as if my body belonged to me alone.
Holy Spirit, thank You for choosing my body as Your personal dwelling place. Cleanse my heart from all impurity. Give me the strength to guard my thoughts, my desires, my actions, and my eyes from anything that defiles Your sanctuary. Help me to care for my physical body responsibly, using wisdom in how I rest, eat, and live.
May everything I do with this body bring honor, glory, and pleasure to You. I hand the title deed of my life over to You today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
