There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

AN UNMARRIED WOMAN / 1 CORINTHIANS 7:34

God’s Word maintains that being single is in no way inferior to being married. In fact, it is better in perhaps the most important way of all – the possibility of offering undivided attention to serving God. An unmarried man (1 Corinthians 7:32-33) or woman (1 Corinthians 7:34) can concentrate on the things that pertain to the Lord in a greater way than those who are married. To be “devoted to the Lord both in body and spirit” does not refer to a greater moral or ethical achievement, but to the possibility of a more focused commitment to God without added family responsibilities, problems and concern. Many times, those who are not married can devote themselves with all their gifts and abilities wholly and completely to the Lord, giving more time and attention to God and His Word.

We live in the period when all worldly things are rapidly approaching an end. For this reason, life in this world should not be our highest concern. Instead, we should direct our greatest attention toward our heavenly home (Hebrews 11:13-16) and to efforts that will matter for eternity (Matthew 6:19-21; 2 Corinthians 4:18).

But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;

TIME IS SHORT / 1 CORINTHIANS 7:29

Time is limited for doing God’s work. Life is brief, and Christ’s return is approaching. This means that we must not be overly preoccupied with earthly issues and concerns (1 Corinthians 7:29-31) because material things will not last. This verse uses an element of hyperbole (deliberate exaggeration for effect), particularly as it relates to emotional expressions and earthly relationships. We should not be so caught up in any earthly attachment that we overlook eternal concerns. Paul is certainly not saying that Christians should neglect or abandon their marriage relationships.

Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.

KEEPING GOD’S COMMANDS / 1 CORINTHIANS 7:19

Whatever a believer’s background, the individual should not rely on or yield to social or religious rituals, customs or traditions (Acts 2:29) in an attempt to satisfy people or gain favor with God. We cannot gain spiritual salvation through such actions, but only through genuine faith in Jesus Christ. Yet, how can Paul, who emphasized so strongly that salvation comes by faith (Romans 3 – 4), say that what really matters is “keeping God’s commands”? He can say this because salvation by faith, if it is a true experience, leads to obeying and serving God out of love and gratitude to Christ – not out of duty or obligation. Anything less than obedience falls short of New Testament saving faith (Galatians 5:6; Galatians 6:15).

IS NOT BOUND / 1 CORINTHIANS 7:15

In the event that a non-Christian partner abandons or divorces a Christian spouse, the marriage relation is dissolved. “Not bound in such circumstances” means that the believer is released from the marriage contract. The word “bound” (Greek douloo) literally means” to enslave”; the faithful believer is no longer enslaved to his or her marriage vows. In this case, the abandoned spouse is free to remarry, as long as he or she marries a Christian (1 Corinthians 7:39; Matthew 19:9).

When a Christian is involved in a marriage with an unbeliever, the marriage and the children born to that union are still under God’s holy influence through the Christian spouse. For this reason, the believer should stay with the unbeliever and not divide the marriage or the home through separation or divorce. This passage certainly does not imply that the children of a Christian are spiritually saved or right with God because of their parent’s commitment to Christ, individuals must make that decision for themselves. However, through faithfulness to Christ, the Christian husband or wife may finally come to influence his or her spouse and family to accept Christ (1 Peter 3:1-2).

However, he writes as one who has been directly commissioned by Christ to deliver his message with God-given authority under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 7:25, 40; 14:37; Acts 9:1-21).

SHE MUST REMAIN UNMARRIED / 1 CORINTHIANS 7:11

In 1 Corinthians 7:10, Paul recognizes that God wants marriage to be a lifelong commitment. He acknowledges, however, that sometimes a marriage relationship may become so unbearable that separation from the partner is necessary. Paul is not talking here about divorce permitted by God because of adultery (Matthew 19:9) or abandonment of a marriage partner (1 Corinthians 7:15). Rather, he is speaking of separation without legal divorce. He may be referring to situations where a marriage partner is acting in such a way as to endanger the physical or spiritual life of the spouse and children. In such conditions, it may be best that one of the partners leave the home and not remarry. It is inconceivable that Paul would advocate that a person remain with a spouse who repeatedly brought physical harm and abuse on her (or him, if the wife is the abuser) and the children.

THE HUSBAND SHOULD FULFILL / 1 CORINTHIANS 7:3

The commitment of marriage means that each partner surrenders the exclusive right to his partner, surrenders the exclusive right to his or her own body and gives the spouse a rightful claim to it. This means that neither marriage partner should deny the other’s right to normal sexual satisfaction. Sensual desires directed toward one’s spouse within marriage are natural and God-give and refusing to fulfill one another’s needs is to open up the marriage to Satan’s temptation of adultery (1 Corinthians 7:5).

The entire seventh chapter is Paul’s response to questions from the church in Corinth concerning marriage relationships. His instructions must be viewed in light of 1 Corinthians 7:26, “Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good.” A time of crisis and persecution was coming for the early Christians, and in this situation maintaining a marriage relationship would have been difficult.
