START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 1 Corinthians 8:2
But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.
Beyond Being “Right”: Why Love Trumps Knowledge in the Christian Life
We have all met someone who uses their intellect like a shield—or worse, a weapon. In Christian circles, this often looks like believers who justify questionable behaviors by pointing to their “theological maturity” or “spiritual liberty.” They know the rules, they understand grace, and they use that knowledge to do exactly what they want, regardless of how it impacts the people around them.
But the Apostle Paul levels a piercing reality check against this mindset in 1 Corinthians 8:2: “Anyone who claims to know something does not yet know as they ought to know.”
If you base your right to cross ethical lines or indulge in questionable habits solely on your superior understanding, Scripture says you have actually missed the point entirely.
The Trap of “Incomplete” Knowledge
Our perspective in this life is inherently limited. We see through a glass darkly, catching only glimpses of divine truth. Because our knowledge is always incomplete and imperfect, it makes for a very shaky foundation for our ethics.
When we rely strictly on what we think we know, we fall into a dangerous trap:
- False Pride: Paul warns that “knowledge puffs up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). It inflates our ego and makes us feel superior to those with stricter boundaries.
- Spiritual Blindness: Assuming we know everything blinds us to our own flaws and the subtle ways we wander away from God.
- Isolation: Intellectual pride drives wedges between us and our community, cutting us off from accountability.
Knowledge focuses on self—what I am allowed to do, what I understand, and what my rights are.
The Better Way: Built on Love
While knowledge puffs up and fills a person with false pride, Paul offers a beautiful alternative: “love builds up.”
When love is our primary consideration and motivation, the question shifts from “What am I allowed to do?” to “How will this action affect my brother or sister in Christ?”
Living by the rule of love changes how we navigate questionable areas of life:
- We protect the vulnerable: We will actively refuse to engage in or encourage any activity that might influence another believer to defy their conscience.
- We guard relationships: We prioritize another person’s relationship with God over our own desire to exercise personal freedom.
- We value souls over rights: As Paul notes in 1 Corinthians 8:11, destroying a fellow believer for the sake of our “knowledge” is a spiritual tragedy.
True spiritual maturity is never measured by how much theological information you can recite. It is measured by how much sacrificial love you show to the weak, the struggling, and the sensitive consciences around you.
Known by God
There is a profound promise tucked into this passage. Those who lay down their rights out of love for others are the ones who are truly “known by God” (1 Corinthians 8:3).
God is not impressed by our theological degrees or our clever justifications. He is looking for hearts that beat in sync with His—hearts that value people over being right. Let us stop using our “mature understanding” as an excuse to satisfy our desires, and instead start using our freedom to build up the body of Christ.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, forgive us for the times we have allowed our knowledge to make us proud. Forgive us for prioritizing our personal rights and freedoms over the spiritual well-being of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Remind us daily that our understanding in this life is imperfect, but Your love is flawless.
Help us to live by the rule of love. Give us the humility to lay down our preferences and liberties if they might cause another believer to stumble or compromise their conscience. May our lives be defined not by how much we know, but by how deeply we love You and care for others. Keep us close to Your heart, and let us find our ultimate security in being known by You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
