NOT EVERYTHING IS BENEFICIAL / 1 CORINTHIANS 10:23-24

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 10:23-24

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. ²⁴ Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.

We live in a culture that idolizes personal rights. “It is my life, my body, and my choice” is the baseline of modern decision-making. As Christians, we are indeed set free in Christ. However, the Apostle Paul challenges us to look past our rights and look toward our responsibilities.

In 1 Corinthians 10:23–24, Paul writes:
“‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.”

Paul addresses a community wrestling with Christian freedom. They wanted to know how far they could stretch their liberty before it became a sin. Paul completely flips the script. The question for a follower of Jesus is never, “What am I allowed to get away with?” The question must always be, “How will this action impact my neighbor?”

Our primary concern in matters of personal conscience must be to honor God and build up others. Your choices do not exist in a vacuum. People are watching you to see what Jesus is like. If our exercise of freedom trips up someone else or damages their faith, then that freedom is no longer serving love.

To be “beneficial” and “constructive” means our choices should actively help others grow closer to God. True Christian maturity is the willingness to lay down a right for the sake of someone else’s spiritual health.

When we shift our focus from “what is best for me” to “what is truly best for you,” we reflect the heart of Christ. Jesus had ultimate rights as God, yet He surrendered them all to serve and save us.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the incredible freedom You have given us through Jesus Christ. Forgive us for the times we have used our liberty as an excuse to satisfy our own desires, ignoring how our actions affect those around us.

Give us eyes to see the people in our lives today. Help us to gladly lay down our rights, our preferences, and our comforts if it means building up someone else’s faith. May our words, habits, and choices be beneficial and constructive to the body of Christ.

Let our lives be a clear, beautiful reflection of Jesus to a world that desperately needs to see His love. Guard our hearts against selfishness, and teach us to seek the good of others above our own.
