START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 1 Corinthians 10:13
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
Finding the Way Out: Overcoming Temptation Through God’s Faithfulness
We have all been there. A situation arises, a thought crosses our mind, or a sudden impulse hits us, and suddenly we find ourselves face-to-face with temptation. In those moments, it is incredibly easy to slide into excuses. We tell ourselves, “I’m only human,” or “Nobody is perfect.”
However, as followers of Christ, we cannot justify disobeying God’s standards with the excuse of human imperfection (Romans 6:1). The Apostle Paul provides an incredible assurance to the church in Corinth—and to us today—that no true follower of Jesus ever needs to run the risk of compromising their relationship with Him.
The definitive truth for our spiritual walks is found in 1 Corinthians 10:13:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
Temptation is a Battle, Not a Sin
First, we must establish a vital distinction: it is not a sin to be tempted.
Jesus Himself, our sinless Savior, was fiercely tempted by the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11), yet He never sinned. The sin occurs when we give in to the temptation.
Too often, our biggest mistake is not the final fallback, but the initial setup. We openly choose to put ourselves in environments, relationships, or situations where temptation is clearly present. When we voluntarily walk into the enemy’s territory, a fall becomes almost certain.
The Twofold Expression of God’s Faithfulness
The Holy Spirit clearly affirms that God provides His children with the exact strength and opportunity needed to overcome every single spiritual battle. God’s faithfulness in the midst of our trials expresses itself in two beautiful ways:
- He sets the boundary: He will never allow you to be tempted beyond what you can handle and resist with His help (2 Thessalonians 3:3).
- He provides the exit: For every temptation that comes your way, He will actively provide a specific way for you to endure it and overcome the desire to sin.
Equipped with Divine Power
If we fall, it is never because Christ’s power or provision was inadequate. Rather, it is because we failed to rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to help us resist our own ungodly desires (James 1:13-15).
God has already given us everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). As believers, we are fully loaded with an arsenal of spiritual tools to fight and win personal battles against sin and evil forces (Ephesians 6:10-18):
- God’s Grace: Saving us and training us to say “no” to ungodliness (Titus 2:11-14).
- The Blood of Jesus: The ultimate sacrifice that cleanses us and breaks the chain of sin (1 Peter 2:24).
- God’s Word: Our offensive weapon, the sword of the Spirit, to strike down lies (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
- The Holy Spirit: Indwelling us with continuous power, renewal, and restraint (Galatians 5:16).
- Christ’s Intercession: Our Savior actively pleading our case in heaven right now (Hebrews 7:25).
Through a vibrant, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, we can live lives that are fully pleasing to Him, bearing fruit and remaining strengthened with His glorious might (Colossians 1:10-11). Look for the way out today—God has already provided it.
A Closing Prayer for Strength and Endurance
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your unchanging faithfulness. Forgive me for the times I have made excuses for my sins or walked willingly into situations that trigger my weaknesses. I praise You that You never leave me unequipped.
Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see the “way out” every time temptation comes near. Help me to stop relying on my own willpower and instead depend entirely on Your divine strength. Lord Jesus, thank You for Your intercession and Your blood which gives me victory over sin. May my thoughts, words, and actions bring joy to Your heart today. Guard my steps and lead me in righteousness.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
