IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR WINGS / 57:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 57:1

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

Safe in the Storm: Finding Refuge in the Shadow of His Wings

Life has a way of throwing unexpected storms our way. Whether it is a sudden financial crisis, an unexpected illness, or the heavy weight of daily anxiety, we all face seasons where we desperately need shelter. During these times, the scriptures offer us a beautiful, comforting picture of where to turn.

In Psalm 57:1, David writes: “Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.”

This descriptive language pictures God’s immense love, protection, and shelter from the raging storms of life. It reminds us that we do not have to face the wind and rain alone.

The Imagery of Divine Protection

The phrase “the shadow of your wings” is a recurring theme throughout the Psalms, serving as a powerful metaphor for absolute safety:

  • The Intimacy of Prayer: We take refuge under His wings when we intentionally come to Him in prayer and rely on Him in faith.
  • The Comfort of His Presence: As outlined in Psalm 17:8-9; Psalm 36:7, this shadow is a place of priceless love where both the high and low of humanity can find safety.
  • The Shield of Faithfulness: Psalm 91:4 reassures us that He will cover us with His feathers, and His faithfulness will act as our protective shield.

Like a mother bird fiercely guarding her chicks from predators or harsh weather, God draws us close to His heart when the world feels overwhelming.

Protected for a Purpose

Taking refuge in God does not mean the storms will instantly disappear. David wrote Psalm 57 while literally hiding in a dark cave, fleeing for his life from King Saul. The storm was still raging outside his cave, but his soul found immediate safety because his trust was anchored in the Almighty.

The very next verse gives us the ultimate reassurance: “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me” (Psalm 57:2).

This means that God actively protects us from everything that would work against His divine purpose for our lives. The challenges you face today cannot override the plans He has established for your future. When you make the Lord your dwelling place, your purpose is secure under His wings.

If you are walking through a difficult season today, stop trying to fight the winds in your own strength. Run to the shelter. Pour out your heart in prayer, stand firm in your faith, and rest peacefully knowing that the storm will eventually pass.

A Closing Prayer for Shelter and Strength

Heavenly Father,

We come to You today acknowledging that the storms of this life are too heavy for us to face alone. Thank You for the beautiful promise of Psalm 57:1. We actively choose to run into the shadow of Your wings today, finding our ultimate refuge, love, and protection in Your presence.

Forgive us for the times we have tried to rely on our own strength or seek shelter in the things of this world. We place our complete faith and trust in You. Cover us with Your feathers, Lord, and let Your faithfulness be our shield against fear, doubt, and anxiety.

We rest in the powerful truth that You protect us from everything that tries to work against Your good plans. Guard our hearts, secure our futures, and fulfill Your perfect purpose in our lives. We trust that this storm will pass, and until it does, we will praise You from the safety of Your embrace.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 56:8

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

The God Who Numbers Your Tears: Comfort in Psalms 56:8

Have you ever felt completely isolated in your pain? In moments of deep heartbreak, it is easy to believe that your suffering goes unnoticed by the rest of the world. Yet, scripture reveals a beautiful, intimate truth about our Creator: God sees, knows, and makes note of all our troubles.

In Psalms 56:8, David writes a deeply personal line: “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have listed each one in your scroll.”

This imagery is not just poetic. It is a profound revelation of God’s active, tender attentiveness to your life.

God Keeps the Records of Your Pain

Nothing you go through escapes the notice of your Heavenly Father. He is intimately acquainted with all your ways (Psalms 139:16), and He manages the details of your daily survival (Matthew 6:25-32).

When you face a disappointing experience, a chronic illness, a sleepless night, financial stress, or a toxic problem at school, home, or work, God is watching. He does not look away. He does not minimize your grief. He views your experiences with deep, active compassion.

Your Faithfulness is Treasured

God remembers and treasures every tear-tough situation. When you choose to remain faithful to Him despite the heavy weight of sorrow, your endurance is not in vain. Scripture promises that our present sufferings are establishing something far greater for our future:

  • Heavenly Honor: Your steadfastness through trials means you will receive greater honor when you are with Him in heaven (Romans 8:17; 1 Peter 4:14).
  • Divine Purpose: No season of weeping is wasted. God actively works for the good of the believer and will accomplish His perfect purposes through all situations (Romans 8:28).

Your tears are so valuable to God that He preserves them. He records the context of your pain in His scroll, ensuring that your quiet endurance will be vindicated and rewarded in eternity.

A Prayer for the Weary Heart

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who draws close to the brokenhearted. Thank You for the comfort of knowing that not a single one of my tears falls to the ground unnoticed. You see the sleepless nights, the hidden anxieties, and the burdens I carry at home, work, and school.

Forgive me for the times I believe the lie that I am alone. Today, I rest in the truth that You have listed my tears in Your scroll and collected them in Your bottle. I ask for the strength to remain faithful to You through this tear-tough season. Hold me close, renew my joy, and let Your perfect peace rule in my heart. I trust that You are working all things together for my good and Your glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WHOSE WORD I PRAISE / PSALMS 56:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 56:4

In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.

Whose Word I Praise: Finding Peace When Fear Creeps In

Fear has a sneaky way of shrinking our world. When trouble strikes, it is easy to focus entirely on our problems, letting anxiety dictate our steps.

Yet, Scripture offers a beautiful, countercultural remedy for a fearful heart: praise. Specifically, praising God’s concrete promises.

The Power of Praising the Word

In Psalms 56:4, King David writes:

“In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

When David wrote these words, he was not sitting in a peaceful sanctuary. He was captured by his enemies in Gath. He was surrounded by danger.

Instead of letting fear paralyze him, David deliberately shifted his focus. He chose to express thanks for the instruction, help, and guidance found in God’s Word (Psalms 119).

Trust Over Fear

Putting God’s promises into practice changes our perspective. It honors Him and naturally causes trust to replace our deepest anxieties (Psalms 56:11).

When we active our faith by trusting His Word, we unlock several beautiful truths:

  • We find absolute freedom: God delivers our souls from death and keeps our feet from stumbling (Psalm 56:13).
  • We remember who is on our side: We are reminded of the ultimate comfort found in Psalms 56:9“This I know, that God is for me.”
  • We anchor in New Testament truth: If God is for us, who can successfully be against us? (Romans 8:31).

If you are walking through a season of trouble today, do not anchor your mind to the storm. Anchor it to the Word. Praise His promises before you even see the breakthrough, and watch your fear melt away into unwavering trust.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Word. In moments when fear creeps into my heart, remind me of Your unchanging promises. I choose to praise Your Word today, knowing that Your instruction guides me and Your truth protects me.

Forgive me for the times I let my circumstances seem bigger than Your power. I declare today that You are for me, and because You are on my side, I do not need to be afraid of what tomorrow holds. Replace my anxiety with a deep, unshakable trust in You. Deliver my feet from stumbling and let me walk before You in the light of life.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

CAST YOUR CARES ON THE LORD / PSALMS 55:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 55:22

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Trading Our Heavy Burdens for God’s Perfect Peace

We all face seasons when life feels like too much to handle. Unexpected difficulties pile up. Anxiety creeps in. The weight of our worries blocks out our joy.

During these overwhelming moments, the Bible offers a beautiful, life-changing invitation. God does not expect you to carry the heavy load alone.

The Lifelong Invitation to Let Go

In Psalms 55:22, we are given a direct command and a comfort: “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

When difficulties surpass our human strength, God invites us to physically transfer the weight of our concerns onto Him. He does not just watch us struggle. He walks alongside us, carrying the heaviest part of the load.

This is not a new offer. The Holy Spirit has extended this same invitation to God’s people throughout history:

  • Jesus echoed this in Matthew 11:28-30, inviting the weary and burdened to come to Him for true rest.
  • Peter urged believers to humble themselves and “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).
  • Paul challenged us in Philippians 4:6; Philippians 4:7 to bring every anxiety to God in prayer, promising that His supernatural peace will guard our hearts and minds.

You were never meant to carry it all. Today, you can choose to hand over your worries to the One who rules the universe.

A Closing Prayer for Peace

Dear Heavenly Father,

Right now, I bring to You the difficulties that feel too heavy for me to handle. Lord, I confess that I have been trying to carry this weight on my own, and I am weary. I hold onto Your promise in Psalm 55:22. I actively cast my cares, my anxieties, and my fears onto Your shoulders today.

Thank You for walking alongside me. Thank You for sustaining me so that I will not be shaken. Fill my heart with the peace that passes all understanding, and guard my mind against discouragement. I trust Your love and Your timing.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

WINGS OF A DOVE … I WOULD FLY AWAY / PSALMS 55:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 55:6

And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest.

Finding Refuge When You Just Want to Fly Away

We have all been there. The weight of the world presses down so hard that your chest feels tight. The noise of criticism, harassment, or sudden bad news becomes deafening. In those moments, fear and discouragement take over, and a desperate thought echoes in our minds: I just need to get out of here.

King David knew this feeling intimately. In Psalm 55:6, he cries out:

“Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.”

The Urge to Escape

When we look at David’s situation in Psalms 55:2-5, we see a man completely overwhelmed. He speaks of being distraught by the voice of the enemy, crushed by the staring of the wicked, and gripped by the terrors of death.

Like the prophet Jeremiah, who wished for a lodging place in the wilderness just to get away from his people (Jeremiah 9:2), our first instinct during a crisis is often to run. We want to escape the difficult marriage, the toxic workplace, the financial stress, or the painful health diagnosis. We convince ourselves that if we could just change our geography or our circumstances, we would finally find peace.

But here is the hard truth: in most cases, we cannot escape. We cannot fly away from reality. The problems follow us, or the responsibilities bind us to where we are.

The Real Solution: Running To, Not Running From

If we cannot change our geography, we must change our strategy. David’s breakthrough in Psalm 55 happens when he stops looking for a way out and starts looking up.

The real solution to an overwhelming life is not finding a geographic escape, but seeking a spiritual refuge. David models exactly how to do this in two practical steps:

1. Cry Out Constantly

Instead of suffering in silence or complaining to others, David takes his pain directly to the source of comfort.

“As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.” (Psalm 55:16-17)

Don’t ration your prayers. Talk to God all day long. Let Him hear the raw, unfiltered reality of your distress. He can handle your panic and your tears.

2. Cast Your Burden

The turning point of the entire Psalm is found in Psalms 55:22, which offers a definitive command and a beautiful promise:

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22)

To “cast” means to throw something heavy off yourself and onto someone else. We are not meant to carry the crushing weight of our circumstances. When we give Him our concerns, we trust that He will take care of everything in His own perfect time and His own perfect way. He might not change your situation today, but He promises to sustain you through it.

You don’t need the wings of a dove to find rest. You simply need to rest under the shadow of His wings.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Right now, my heart is heavy, and my mind is overwhelmed. Like the psalmist, there are moments where I just want to fly away from my troubles, escape my realities, and run to a place of rest. But Lord, I know that true rest cannot be found by running away from my life; it is only found by running into Your arms.

I choose to stop carrying this heavy burden alone. Right now, I cast my fears, my discouragements, and my anxieties onto You. I confess that I do not know how to fix this situation, but I trust that You do. Please sustain me as You promised. Grant me a peace that passes human understanding, and give me the strength to stand firm without being shaken. I trust Your timing, and I trust Your way.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

MY HEART IS IN ANGUISH WITHIN ME / PSALMS 55:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 55:4

My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

Finding Peace When Your Heart Is in Anguish

We have all experienced moments when life hits so hard that it physically hurts. In Psalms 55:4, King David writes from a place of deep, crushing pain: “My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me.”

These are not the words of a man having a bad day. This is the cry of a soul pushed to its absolute limit.

The Weight of Betrayal and Consequences

To truly understand David’s anguish, we must look at the heartbreaking context behind this psalm. Many biblical scholars believe David wrote these words after his own son, Absalom, betrayed him. Absalom didn’t just turn his back on his father; he actively attempted to steal David’s kingdom and hunted him down.

The pain of betrayal by a stranger is difficult. The pain of betrayal by your own child is agonizing.

Worse still, David knew this rebellion was not random. It was one of the severe consequences prophesied after his own hidden sins of adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah (2 Samuel 12:11-12). David was trapped in a perfect storm of grief: the pain of a broken family, the weight of past bad decisions, and the public fallout of private failures.

What to Do When Anguish Strikes

When our hearts are in anguish—whether from our own mistakes, the actions of others, or a mix of both—David’s response in Psalm 55 gives us a roadmap for survival:

  • Be honest with God. David did not sanitize his prayers. He told God exactly how overwhelmed, scared, and hurt he was. God can handle your rawest emotions.
  • Release the desire to run. In Psalms 55:6-8, David admits he wants to grow wings and fly away to a lonely desert just to escape the storm. Wanting to escape is natural, but true peace is found by running to God, not away from reality.
  • Cast your cares. Later in the same psalm, David shifts his focus from his pain to God’s character. Psalms 55:22 gives us the ultimate remedy: “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

No matter what brought you to this point of anguish today, you do not have to carry the weight alone. God specializes in sustaining weary souls, forgiving past mistakes, and holding us steady when our world shakes.

A Closing Prayer for the Anguished Heart

Heavenly Father,

Right now, my heart feels heavy, bruised, and full of anguish. Like David, I feel overwhelmed by the storms around me and the consequences of life. Lord, you know every detail of my pain, my regrets, and the deep hurts caused by others.

I stop trying to hide my grief or run away from my problems. Instead, I run directly to You. I cast every heavy burden, every anxious thought, and every broken piece of my heart at Your feet today.

Forgive my past failures, heal my deep wounds, and protect me from the terrors that rob me of peace. Be my shelter in this storm. I trust that You will sustain me, hold me close, and keep me from shaking.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

GOD IS MY HELP / PSALMS 54:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 54:4

Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.

Finding Strength in Deep Waters: Why God is Your Ultimate Helper

Life can shift from calm to chaotic in a single moment. Whether you are facing a sudden personal disaster, an overwhelming health report, or a toxic situation at work, fear is a natural human response.

When danger surrounds you, knowing where to turn makes all the difference.

Psalm 54:4 provides a rock-solid anchor for those moments: “Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me.”

This short verse carries timeless power for anyone navigating deep, turbulent waters.

A Model for Praying Through Danger

Psalm 54 was written by King David while he was actively running for his life. He was hidden in the wilderness, betrayed by people he knew, and hunted by a ruthless army. He was in immediate, physical danger.

David did not pretend everything was fine. Instead, his prayer gives us a perfect model for handling crisis:

  • He named his trouble: He spoke honestly to God about the threat.
  • He shifted his focus: He stopped looking at the size of his problem and started looking at the size of his God.
  • He expected an answer: David didn’t just hope God heard him; he fully expected God to respond with rescuing, healing, and sustaining power.

When you trust God in the middle of a disaster, your perspective changes. You realize that while the danger is real, God’s presence is even more real.

The Helper Who Never Leaves

David looked forward to God’s rescue, but as New Testament believers, we have an even closer relationship with our Helper.

Before Jesus went to the cross, He made a beautiful promise to His followers. In John 14:16, He said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.”

That Advocate is the Holy Spirit.

Today, the Lord does not just look down on your struggle from a distance. He sends the Holy Spirit to live inside you as your constant Helper, Counselor, and Encourager.

  • When you are too weak to stand, the Spirit sustains you.
  • When you do not have the words to pray, the Spirit intercedes for you.
  • When fear threatens to take over, the Spirit brings a peace that defies logic.

You are never left to face danger alone. The Almighty God is your help, and He is actively sustaining your life right now.

A Closing Prayer for God’s Help

Heavenly Father,

Right now, I lift up everyone who is facing a season of danger, disaster, or deep anxiety. You see the exact storms surrounding them, and You know the weight they are carrying. Lord, remind them today that You are their ultimate Helper.

We declare Psalm 54:4 over their lives: Surely, You are their help, and You are the one who sustains them. Send Your Holy Spirit right now to comfort their hearts, quiet their fears, and bring an overwhelming sense of Your peace. Deliver them from their troubles, heal their wounds, and show Yourself strong on their behalf.

Thank You for never leaving us or forsaking us. We place our trust completely in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

SURVIVING THE SUMMER SLAM: MANAGING HEAT WITH FIBROMYALGIA & RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Managing summer heat when living with both fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) requires balancing two entirely different pain triggers at once. While the high humidity and temperature swings can send fibromyalgia nerve pain and fatigue into overdrive, the seasonal shift also triggers inflammatory joint swelling and flares for RA. Navigating this dual-diagnosis means protecting your highly sensitive nervous system from overheating without letting your joints lock up.

Just a heads up! Some of the links below are affiliate links. This means I earn a small reward if you buy something, which helps support this site.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or a medical professional. I am sharing these tips based on my personal experience living with these conditions and managing severe summer sensory flares.

Optimize Your Environment

  • Climate Control: Keep indoor temperatures consistent using air conditioning to prevent the abrupt atmospheric changes that trigger joint expansion.
  • Dehumidify: Run a dehumidifier to thin out heavy air, which directly relieves the oppressive muscle weight associated with fibromyalgia.
  • Smart Airflow: Position fans to circulate air across the room rather than blowing directly on you, as cold drafts can cause fibro-monitored muscles to spasm.
  • Darken Rooms: Utilize blackout curtains during peak afternoon hours to block out both intense heat and blinding sunlight.

Master Internal and External Cooling

  • Lukewarm Showers: Choose cool or lukewarm showers over freezing cold water to lower your core temperature safely without shocking your nervous system.
  • Pulse Point Cooling: Apply a damp washcloth or a wrapped gel ice pack to your neck, ankles, or wrists for rapid, gentle temperature relief.
  • Targeted Cold: Place towel-wrapped ice packs exclusively on swollen, inflamed RA joints for 15 to 20 minutes to numb active inflammation.
  • Targeted Heat: Continue using localized moist heat wraps on stiff, non-swollen muscles to maintain flexibility on high-acuity mornings.

Rethink Clothing and Accessories

  • Breathable Fabrics: Wear loose, lightweight clothing made of natural fibers like cotton or linen to prevent skin irritation and overheating.
  • Seamless Options: Opt for tagless, smooth-seamed garments to minimize the sensory overload common with fibromyalgia.
  • Sun Protection: Wear polarized sunglasses outdoors to combat photophobia, an eye-straining light sensitivity affecting up to 70% of fibromyalgia patients.
  • Joint Support: Use lightweight, breathable compression gloves or braces to support throbbing joints without trapping excess body heat.

Adjust Diet and Hydration

  • Hydrate Continuously: Sip water throughout the day to keep joints lubricated, flush out toxins, and stave off dehydration-induced flares.
  • Electrolyte Balance: Incorporate electrolyte-rich beverages to replace the vital salts lost through sweating.
  • No-Cook Meals: Prepare cold, anti-inflammatory meals like salads or smoothies to avoid turning on a hot stove or oven.
  • Limit Triggers: Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, as both interfere directly with your body’s natural ability to regulate its own temperature.

Modify Activity and Pacing

  • Time Shifts: Schedule necessary chores, doctor visits, or brief walks strictly during the coolest hours of early morning or late evening.
  • Buoyant Movement: Exercise in a heated indoor pool (ideally between 88°F and 92°F) to take the pressure off your joints while keeping your body cool.
  • Aggressive Pacing: Divide your daily tasks into small, bite-sized pieces and take mandatory resting breaks before fatigue actually sets in.
  • Padded Seating: Bring a soft gel cushion to any summer outings to avoid sitting on hard benches that aggravate chronic spinal and hip pain.

Sensory-First Summer Planning: Managing Fibromyalgia Heat Sensitivity

When summer triggers your fibromyalgia sensory sensitivity, your body perceives heat, sweat, and bright light not just as discomfort, but as actual pain. This heightened reaction—known as central sensitization—means your nervous system amplifies every warm or irritating touch.

To prevent your skin and nerves from going into overdrive, your summer strategy needs to focus on soothing your nervous system, calming hyper-reactive nerves, and reducing fabric friction.

Overcoming Fabric and Tactical Friction

  • Fabric Upgrades: Switch exclusively to 100% bamboo, micro-modal, or high-grade mulberry silk, which are smoother and generate less nerve-provoking friction than cotton.
  • Inverted Dressing: Wear loungewear or t-shirts inside-out while at home to keep rough interior seams and threads away from hypersensitive skin.
  • Barrier Layering: Place a soft, bamboo crib sheet or jersey-knit blanket over couch cushions to block rough upholstery from scraping against your legs or arms.
  • Loose Waistbands: Choose dresses, oversized tunics, or loose drawstring pants instead of elastic waistbands to eliminate deep pressure on your torso.

Managing Sweat and Allodynia (Touch Pain)

  • Anti-Chafe Powders: Apply talc-free, soothing powders (like arrowroot or calamine-based powders) to skin folds to stop damp skin from chafing.
  • Water Wipes: Use alcohol-free, unscented baby wipes to gently dab away sweat without scrubbing or stripping your skin’s natural moisture.
  • Blot, Don’t Rub: Pat your skin gently with a plush microfiber towel after bathing, avoiding any vigorous rubbing that can trigger muscle spasms.
  • Loose Sheets: Drape a lightweight linen sheet loosely over your bed, using a bed cradle or propped pillows to keep the fabric from pressing directly on your toes or legs.

Controlling Visual and Ambient Stimulation

  • Color-Tinted Lenses: Wear rose-tinted (FL-41) or green-tinted glasses indoors and outdoors to filter out painful light wavelengths and reduce migraines.
  • Dimmed Environment: Pull down sheer window shades to let natural light in while diffusing the intense, sharp glare of the midday sun.
  • Sound Masking: Run a smooth brown-noise machine to mask the harsh, cycling sounds of loud air conditioners or fans that can irritate your nervous system.
  • Cooling Eye Masks: Rest a soft, chilled silk eye mask over your brow to instantly calm the facial nerves that trigger sensory headaches.

Gentle, Sensory-Safe Cooling Methods

  • Evaporative Cooling: Mist your skin with a fine water spray while sitting near a gentle fan, allowing evaporation to cool you without heavy ice contact.
  • Muted Temperatures: Wrap ice packs in thick bath towels so they feel pleasantly cool rather than freezing cold, which can shock sensitive nerves.
  • Lukewarm Foot Baths: Soak your feet in lukewarm water for ten minutes to lower your core body temperature safely and softly.
  • Peppermint Distillate: Spray a diluted, organic peppermint hydrosol on your ankles or wrists for a gentle, tingly cooling sensation without heavy chemical perfumes.

Be Gentle with Yourself

At the end of the day, the most important survival tool you have is self-compassion. If the heat means you accomplish nothing today other than resting in a cool room, that is entirely okay. Your body is fighting an invisible battle against the elements, and it deserves grace.

Listen to your nerves, protect your joints, and don’t be afraid to say no to summer activities that drain your battery. What is one adjustment you can make today to give your body a little extra relief?

A BROKEN AND CONTRITE HEART / PSALMS 51:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 51:17

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

The Offering God Never Rejects: Understanding the Broken and Contrite Heart

We live in a culture obsessed with performance. We measure worth by what we can produce, achieve, or sacrifice. Sometimes we bring this exact same mindset into our relationship with God. We try to impress Him with our behavior, our service, or our personal sacrifices.

But have you ever stopped to realize that God isn’t looking for your resume?

The truth is, people make sacrifices all the time. Sometimes we sacrifice for good reasons, like family or career. Other times, we sacrifice for bad reasons, driven by pride or a desire control. Because our motives are so easily tangled up in selfishness, God is not overly impressed by what we think we can do for Him.

So, what does He actually want? King David discovered the answer in the lowest, darkest moment of his life. After committing devastating sins, David didn’t try to buy God off with religious rituals. Instead, he wrote these words in Psalms 51:17:

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”

What is a Broken and Contrite Heart?

To the world, “brokenness” means defeated, ruined, or useless. But in the kingdom of God, brokenness is the gateway to healing.

  • A Broken Spirit: This means your pride has been shattered. You have stopped defending your mistakes, making excuses, or pretending you have it all together.
  • A Contrite Heart: The word “contrite” means literally crushed or wiped clean by deep sorrow. It describes a heart full of genuine grief and regret over sin—not just sorrow for getting caught, but sorrow for hurting the heart of God.

What God truly desires is for us to recognize our absolute helplessness without His strength. He wants us to lay down our weapons, stop our striving, and completely surrender our situations to Him.

Why God Embraces the Crushed

When we put aside our selfishness and pride to cry out for mercy, something miraculous happens. God does not turn us away. He does not say, “Come back when you have fixed yourself.”

Scripture gives us beautiful promises about how God responds to humility:

  • He lives with the humble: Isaiah 57:15 tells us that the high and lofty God lives in the high and holy place, but also with those who are contrite and humble in spirit.
  • He justifies the helpless: In Luke 18:9-14, Jesus compares a proud religious leader with a broken tax collector. The tax collector could only beat his breast and pray, “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Jesus declared that it was the broken man, not the proud one, who went home justified.

If you are carrying the heavy weight of regret, failure, or sin today, stop trying to fix it with performative sacrifices. God doesn’t want your empty promises to “do better.” He wants your surrender. You can be absolutely sure that when you bring Him a bruised, broken, and humble heart, He will receive you with open arms.

A Closing Prayer for Surrender

Heavenly Father,

I come to You today recognizing that I cannot save myself, fix myself, or impress You with my own strength. Forgive me for the times I have let pride, selfishness, and secret sins guide my life. I am tired of making my own sacrifices and trying to prove my worth.

Lord, I bring You my heart just as it is—broken, contrite, and filled with regret for where I have fallen short. Thank You for the promise that You will never reject or despise a heart that turns to You in humility. Wash me clean by Your grace. Break the power of pride in my life, and let Your strength be made perfect in my absolute weakness. I surrender my life, my failures, and my future into Your merciful hands.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

NO PROPHET HAS RISEN … LIKE MOSES / DEUTERONOMY 34:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Deuteronomy 34:10

And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face,

Beyond the Miracles: The Deep Intimacy of Moses

Deuteronomy 34:10 offers a striking summary of an extraordinary life: “Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.”

When we look back at Moses, we easily focus on the grand, dramatic milestones. We remember the plagues of Egypt, the split waters of the Red Sea, and the thunderous heights of Mount Sinai. Yet, God’s Word points to something far deeper as his true crown.

Moses’ greatest points of honor were his intimate fellowship with God and his profound understanding of God’s nature and person. He did not just know God’s works; he knew God’s heart.

The Ultimate Ambition of the Believer

Moses’ unique relationship with the Creator was never meant to be an isolated historical event that we merely admire from a distance. Instead, it serves as a powerful blueprint for us today. The highest desire of all believers should be to know God deeply and experience His close, daily fellowship.

Under the New Covenant, this breathtaking intimacy is no longer restricted to a few chosen prophets. It is the absolute privilege and legal right of every single child of God:

  • A Heavenly Adoption: By placing our faith in Jesus, we receive the right to become direct children of God (John 1:12).
  • The Essence of Eternal Life: True eternal life is not just a future destination, but knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ right now (John 17:3).
  • The Cry of the Spirit: We have received the Spirit of adoption, which allows our hearts to cry out intimately, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:14-15; Galatians 4:6).

Access Granted: The Dual Life of the Believer

Can we truly experience the same “face-to-face” reality that Moses did? Scripture gives us a resounding yes. God does not hide Himself from a searching heart.

No person in Christ will ever be denied God’s presence and grace if they intentionally cultivate two dimensions of faith:

  1. An Inner Life of Devotion: Spending quiet time in prayer, studying the Word, and listening to the Holy Spirit.
  2. An Outer Life of Godliness: Walking in active obedience, moral integrity, and love toward others.

When our hidden devotion aligns with our public actions, we find ourselves living in the very center of God’s active presence.

Our Greatest Promise and Ultimate Reward

We often approach God looking for what He can hand us—provisions, career open doors, or physical healing. While He cares about our needs, the ultimate prize of Christianity is God Himself.

The shared fellowship of the Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—is the believer’s greatest promise and reward. In the Upper Room, Jesus revealed this beautiful mystery:

  • If we love Him and walk in His commands, the Father sends the Holy Spirit to live inside us as our Counselor and Teacher (John 14:15; John 14:16; John 14:26).
  • Jesus explicitly promises, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:18).
  • The Father and the Son will actively make their home within those who love Him (John 14:23).

Even now, Jesus stands at the door of your heart and knocks (Revelation 3:20). He is not looking for rigid religious rituals. He is inviting you to sit down, share a meal, and walk through life in absolute union with Him.

Do not settle for merely knowing about God when you are fully invited to know Him.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible example of Moses, who walked with You in face-to-face intimacy. We thank You that through Jesus Christ, that very same closeness is now our birthright. Forgive us for the times we have sought Your hands for blessings rather than seeking Your face for fellowship.

Holy Spirit, help us build an inner life of deep devotion and an outer life of true godliness. We open the door of our hearts anew today. Come in, dine with us, and make Your home within us. Teach us Your nature, reveal Your heart, and let Your presence be our greatest daily reward. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
