START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) 1 Corinthians 7:29
But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none;
Living with Eternity in Mind: Why Time is Short
We live in a world obsessed with building permanent nests. We plan for decades down the road, invest heavily in our comfort, and easily get consumed by daily anxieties. However, the Apostle Paul delivers a striking wake-up call in 1 Corinthians 7:29: “What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short.”
This text reminds us that our current reality has an expiration date. Life is brief, and the return of Jesus Christ is approaching. When we grasp the brevity of time, it completely changes how we view our daily lives, our relationships, and our priorities.
The Urgency of the Hour
When Paul writes that “time is short,” he uses a term that refers to something being compressed or shortened. The window of opportunity to do God’s work and share His love is narrowing.
Because our days are numbered, we cannot afford to be paralyzed by earthly distractions. Material things, social status, and worldly worries will not last. This perspective shifts our focus from temporary comfort to eternal impact.
Understanding the Hyperbole
In the verses following this statement, Paul uses a literary tool called hyperbole—a deliberate exaggeration to make a point. He tells those who have wives to live as though they had none, and those who mourn to live as though they were not mourning.
Paul is not commanding Christians to abandon their spouses or suppress genuine human grief. He highly valued marriage and emotional honesty elsewhere in his writings. Instead, he uses radical language to make a sharp point: Do not let any earthly attachment override your commitment to God.
- Marriage is a beautiful gift, but it is temporary.
- Grief and joy are real emotions, but they belong to this passing world.
- Possessions are useful, but they do not define our true wealth.
We must hold the things of this world with a loose grip, ensuring that our ultimate allegiance belongs to Christ alone.
Putting Eternal Priorities First
Living with the awareness that time is short changes our daily choices. It means we forgive faster, love more boldly, and invest our resources into things that outlast this life. We stop letting minor earthly frustrations rob us of our joy and mission.
Are you overly preoccupied with earthly concerns today? Ask God to realign your vision, helping you navigate your earthly responsibilities while keeping your heart anchored in eternity.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, Almighty God,
Thank You for the reminder that this world is not our final home. Forgive us for the times we get so caught up in earthly worries, material possessions, and daily stresses that we lose sight of Your eternal kingdom. Help us to remember that our time on this earth is short and precious.
Grant us the wisdom to hold the things of this world with a loose hand. Teach us to prioritize Your work, to love others deeply, and to invest in what truly lasts. May our marriages, our careers, and our daily interactions all reflect a heart that is anchored in You. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and the hope of His return. Amen.
