(KJV) 1 Corinthians 10:16
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
The Cup of Thanksgiving: Understanding Communion in 1 Corinthians 10:16
When we participate in communion, we are stepping into a profound tradition rooted in ancient history and spiritual truth. In 1 Corinthians 10:16, the Apostle Paul writes, “Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?” To truly appreciate this verse, we must look back to the very night Jesus instituted this holy observance.
The Ultimate Passover Fulfillment
The “cup of thanksgiving” was not a phrase Paul invented. It was actually one of the traditional cups of wine drunk during the Jewish Passover meal. Jesus chose this specific, covenant-rich environment—the Passover—to establish what we now call the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:17-30; Mark 14:12-26; Luke 22:7-23).
During the Passover, Israel remembered their physical rescue from slavery in Egypt. But Jesus took that ancient ritual and pointed it toward a greater deliverance. The drink that Christians receive when participating in the Lord’s Supper is symbolic of Christ’s sacrificial death. It represents the ultimate price paid to clear the penalty for humanity’s sin against God.
What Does “Participation” Mean?
Paul uses the word participation (or koinonia, meaning fellowship and sharing). When Scripture speaks of a “participation in the blood of Christ,” it refers to Christ’s followers sharing in the spiritual salvation provided by His death (1 Corinthians 11:25).
It is important to understand the nature of these elements. The Bible does not teach that the bread and the drink actually transform into the physical body and blood of Jesus. Rather, these symbols and the occasion itself are given to remind us of Christ’s sacrifice and the eternal benefits He secured for us (1 Corinthians 11:24-25). When we drink the cup, we are publically aligning ourselves with His finished work on the cross, thanking Him for the grace that covers our lives.
Living in Thanksgiving
Every time we approach the communion table, we hold a cup of gratitude. It is a tangible reminder that we are no longer slaves to sin, but are actively participating in the spiritual life, hope, and salvation bought by the Savior. Let us never take the cup for granted, but always lift it with hearts full of praise.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the incredible gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for the cup of thanksgiving that reminds us of the heavy price paid for our freedom. Lord, as we reflect on 1 Corinthians 10:16, fill our hearts with fresh gratitude for the broken body and spilled blood of our Savior. We thank You that through His sacrifice, we get to share in eternal salvation and walk in true fellowship with You. Help us to live every day in the light of Your grace, never forgetting the benefits Jesus secured on our behalf.
In Jesus’ precious name we pray, Amen.
