For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL / COLOSSIANS 1:9

Knowing God’s will – His desires and plans based on His character and purposes – results from knowing God Himself and developing a deep personal relationship with Him. Such a relationship grows out of spending consistent time in prayer – listening to and speaking with God – and the study of His Word. Our ability to recognize and understand God’s will comes as we apply His Word to the decisions, attitudes and actions of daily life. Only this kind of knowledge results in true spiritual wisdom and understanding that guides and transforms our hearts and lives as God desires (Colossians 1:9-11; Philippians 1:9)

FAITHFUL BROTHERS AT COLOSSE / COLOSSIANS 1:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Colossians 1:2

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

FAITHFUL BROTHERS AT COLOSSE / COLOSSIANS 1:2

Paul wrote to the Colossians because false teachers were coming in among the believers in the church there and proclaiming that devotion to Jesus Christ and loyalty to the teachings of Christ’s apostles (Acts 14:4; 2:42) were not enough for a true Christian’s faith and spiritual salvation. This false teaching mixed human “philosophy and “tradition” with the gospel (Colossians 2:8) – the true message of Christ – and called for the worship of angels as mediators between God and humans (Colossians 2:18). These imposters (pretenders who presented themselves as true Christians) also demanded a strict obedience to certain Jewish religious requirements (Colossians 2:16, 21-23). They justified their misguided rulers by claiming to have received special revelation through visions (Colossians 2:18).

  1. The same basic philosophy behind these errors appears today in the teaching that Jesus Christ and the original message of the New Testament are not completely adequate to meet our spiritual needs (2 Peter 1:3).
  2. Paul speaks out boldly against this heresy (false teaching that contradicts the true and proven basis of faith as revealed in the Bible). He does so by showing that Christ is not only our personal Savior (the One who forgives sins and rescues us from spiritual death), but also the head of the church and Lord ( the supreme authority) of the universe and all creation. For this reason, Jesus Chist (and His power in our lives) – not human efforts, ideas or wisdom – rescues us from sin’s power, puts us in a right relationship with God and saves us eternally. We do not need any other mediator – human or spiritual – to go between us and God. We may approach Him directly. 
  3. Being a believer means showing true faith in Christ and His message by actively yielding the guidance and keeping of our lives to Him, loving Him, obeying Him and living by His purpose. We must never add anything to the gospel – the “good news” and true message of Christ – nor support any other experience, teaching or philosophy that is offered in its place.

So the people rested on the seventh day.

RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY / EXODUS 16:30

God’s instructions for the seventh day (Exodus 16:22-30) emphasized that His people were to follow the example He set on the seventh day of creation (Genesis 2:1-4). God knew that if His people failed to observe the Sabbath, they would become exhausted physically and spiritually because of all the activities and concerns of life. The seventh, or Sabbath, day of rest was a means of keeping them from losing sight of spiritual things and then neglecting them. They were to remember that God considered their spiritual lives to be most important (Matthew 12:1; Luke 6:2-10).

 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

God gave orders to gather only enough manna for each day. Gathering more than they needed would show that they did not believe God would provide again the next day. For this reason, anything beyond what they used during the day would spoil. God was teaching the people that their daily existence depended completely on His gift (Matthew 6:11).

BREAD FROM HEAVEN – IN THIS WAY I WILL TEST THEM / EXODUS 16:4

Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

BREAD FROM HEAVEN – IN THIS WAY I WILL TEST THEM / EXODUS 16:4

BREAD FROM HEAVEN

This “bread from heaven” is called “manna” (Exodus 16:15). It was heavenly food miraculously sent among the people each day for the full forty years that they wandered through the wilderness. God sent the manna each morning. The people simply had to collect what they needed. The white substance looked like thin flakes of frost, and it tasted like honey (Exodus 16:14, 31; Numbers 11:9). The supply of manna stopped coming when the Israelites entered the promised land. At that point, other foods became available (Joshua 5:12). Manna was a prophetic symbol of Jesus Christ, “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32; Revelation 2:17), who gives eternal life (John 6:33, 51, 58).

IN THIS WAY I WILL TEST THEM

The people received specific instructions about the manna. This was God’s test of their faith and obedience (Deuteronomy 8:2-3). In the same way, God sometimes directs our circumstances in ways that test our faith and loyalty to Him.

GRUMBLED AGAINST MOSES / EXODUS 16:2

And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

GRUMBLED AGAINST MOSES / EXODUS 16:2

The Israelites complained against Moses for the third time. In reality, they were once again complaining against God Himself (Exodus 14:10-12; 15:24). In spite of all that God had done for them, they were quick to forget His miracles and to lose faith in His goodness, wisdom, promises and plan for their lives (Exodus 17:3; Numbers 14:2; 16:11, 41). Paul warns New Testament believers not to follow Israel’s example (1 Corinthians 10:10). When serious problems arise, we must not blame God. Instead, we must choose to trust Him and rely on His help. He will solve the problems in His time and His way.

WHO DESPISES THE DAY OF SMALL THINGS? / ZECHARIAH 4:10

Some thought that the work on the temple was not important. However, nothing that is done with God’s blessing and in the power of His Spirit is ever unimportant; instead, it has eternal value and meaning. We must never think that our lack of ability or resources will cause God’s purposes to fail. From the time of creation and throughout history, God has always done great things by starting with very little.

Difficulties and obstacles that seem as large as a mountain can be overcome by the power of God’s Spirit working through us. Then again, when the power of the Spirit is not present and active among us, opposition to God’s work and spiritual problems will more likely overwhelm us.

NOT BY MIGHT NOR BY POWER BUT BY MY SPIRIT / ZECHARIAH 4:6

(KJV) Zechariah 4:6

Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

NOT BY MIGHT NOR BY POWER BUT BY MY SPIRIT / ZECHARIAH 4:6

Though this message was spoken to Zerubbabel, it applies to all God’s people (2 Timothy 3:16). Military might, political power or human strength cannot accomplish God’s work; we can only accomplish His purposes if we are enabled by the Holy Spirit (Judges 6:34; Isaiah 31:3). Jesus started His earthly ministry in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:1, 18), and the church was empowered to begin its mission when Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to fill His followers at Pentecost (Acts 1:8; 2:4). Only as the Spirit continues to guide and empower our lives will we accomplish God’s plans for us. This is why Jesus continues to baptize His followers in the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:16).

TWO OLIVE TREES / ZECHARIAH 4:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 4:3

And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

TWO OLIVE TREES / ZECHARIAH 4:3

The two olive trees represent the royal and priestly ministries of Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, the high priest (Haggai 1:1), who were “anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth” (Zechariah 4:14; to be anointed meant commissioned and empowered to serve, and it often was done in a ceremony involving the symbolic pouring of oil over the individual). Both Zerubbabel and Joshua were descendants of King David, just as Jesus Christ (the final and complete Priest and King) would be. 

  1. The trees symbolize a continual source of oil -representing the Spirit’s power – available to God’s people. The two leaders were to guide the people into a life characterized by the power of the Spirit (Zechariah 4:12).
  2. In their fullest meaning, the trees represent the kingly and priestly ministries of Jesus Christ Himself. He serves in the role of both supreme Ruler and Mediator between God and people. He is also the One who baptizes His followers in the Holy Spirit and keeps them full of His power.
