START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 22:18
And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.
The Danger of Empty Devotion: Lessons from Balaam
We often find profound warnings in the most unexpected places in Scripture. One of the most striking examples is the story of Balaam in Numbers 22.
When a wealthy king offers him a fortune to curse God’s people, Balaam responds with words that sound deeply pious: “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the LORD my God.” (Numbers 22:18).
He calls Him “the LORD my God.” It sounds like a statement of absolute surrender. Yet, the rest of Scripture pulls back the curtain on Balaam’s heart, revealing a dangerous truth: you can use the right spiritual language while your heart is far from God.
A God of Convenience, Not Commitment
Balaam was a pagan prophet. When he called Yahweh “my God,” he was likely not expressing exclusive loyalty. Instead, he was simply adding the God of Israel to his personal pantheon of deities. To Balaam, God was a source of power to be tapped and a means to an end.
The New Testament writers do not remember Balaam for his beautiful confession in Numbers 22:18. Instead, they remember his greed.
- Deuteronomy 23:3-6 reveals that God turned Balaam’s intended curse into a blessing.
- 2 Peter 2:15-16 warns against those who follow the way of Balaam, “who loved the wages of wickedness.”
- Jude 1:11 speaks of those who rush profit-driven into “Balaam’s error.”
Balaam wanted the financial reward Balak offered, and he spent his entire journey trying to find a loophole in God’s clear commands. He spoke the language of faith, but his true master was money.
The Modern Parallel: Is He Your Lord?
Balaam’s story forces us to look in the mirror. It is easy to adopt Christian vocabulary, attend church, and claim relationship with God when it is socially or personally advantageous. We might say “the Lord my God” on Sunday, but do our choices on Monday reflect that reality?
True devotion is not about adding God to our lives as a cosmic insurance policy or a tool for personal gain. It is about total submission. If we only obey God when it aligns with our financial interests, our comfort, or our reputation, we are walking in the error of Balaam. God does not want to be one of many priorities in our lives; He demands to be the ultimate authority.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, Almighty God,
We come before You today humbled by the warning of Balaam’s life. Lord, forgive us for the times our lips have honored You while our hearts were pursuing our own selfish desires, wealth, or comfort. Search our hearts today. Strip away any hidden hypocrisy, double-mindedness, or compromise.
We pray that You would not just be the Lord we speak of, but the Lord we surrender to entirely. Let our obedience be driven by love for righteousness, not love for personal gain. Guard our hearts against greed and the subtle trap of compromise. May our actions always match our confession, and may You truly be our Lord, our Savior, and our greatest treasure.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
