And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father in law, We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord hath spoken good concerning Israel.

Come With Us: The Open Invitation of God’s Grace

When we read the Old Testament, it is easy to assume that God’s blessings were exclusively reserved for one specific nation. However, a closer look at the text reveals a beautiful, consistent thread of inclusivity woven into the story of Israel.

In Numbers 10:29, we witness a powerful moment of invitation. Moses speaks to his brother-in-law, Hobab the Midianite, saying, “Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

Moses’ words provide a timeless blueprint for how we should share our faith today.

An Invitation to the Outsider

Hobab was not an Israelite. He was a Midianite—a Gentile. Yet, Moses did not view God’s promises as a private treasure to be hoarded. Instead, he extended a warm, urgent invitation to someone outside the covenant community to join the journey.

The opportunity to make the God of Israel their own God was always available to the surrounding nations. God’s ultimate plan has never been to exclude, but to bless the entire world through His people.

Overcoming the First “No”

Scripture indicates that Hobab initially rejected the invitation, preferring to return to his own land and kindred. However, later passages in Judges 1:16; Judges 4:11 suggest that he, or at least his descendants, eventually chose to join Israel.

This is a profound reminder for anyone sharing the gospel today: a initial “no” is not always a final answer. Seeds of faith take time to grow.

A Beautiful Tapestry of Grace

Hobab is not an isolated case. Throughout biblical history, God continually welcomed outsiders who chose to put their trust in Him:

Rahab: A Canaanite woman who hid the spies and became part of the lineage of Jesus Christ.
Ruth: A Moabite widow who declared, “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God,” also entering the royal line of David.
The Gentile Church: Today, all believers from every nation are grafted into these same spiritual promises through Jesus Christ.

The message of Numbers 10:29 remains active today. We are called to look at the people in our lives—regardless of their background, past, or doubts—and say with confidence and love: “Come with us.”

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the beautiful truth that Your grace knows no boundaries. Thank You that Your invitation to experience Your goodness, mercy, and salvation is extended to all people, from every nation and walk of life.

Give us the heart of Moses—a heart that is eager to invite others into the blessings of Your kingdom. Grant us the courage to speak up, the love to welcome the outsider, and the patience to keep praying for those who say ‘no’ at first.

We pray for our friends, family members, and neighbors who do not yet know You. Open their hearts to hear Your voice, and use our lives as a testimony of Your goodness. May they choose to come with us and experience the fullness of Your promises.
