SPIRIT OF GOD CAME UPON HIM / NUMBERS 24:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 24:2

And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.

The Danger of External Anointing Without Internal Transformation

God will sovereignly accomplish His purposes, even through flawed instruments. In Numbers 24:2, we read a striking phrase: “And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.” At first glance, this looks like a beautiful moment of spiritual devotion. However, a deeper look reveals a vital difference between the Old Testament manifestation of the Holy Spirit and the reality we enjoy today.

Revelation vs. Relationship

The Spirit coming upon Balaam was strictly for the purpose of divine revelation. It was not a cosmic stamp of approval on his character, nor was it a witness that he was God’s holy prophet. God frequently operates outside of our expectations, occasionally using individuals who are not in a right relationship with Him to bring about His sovereign will.

We see this exact phenomenon repeated in the New Testament with the high priest Caiaphas. In John 11:49-52, Caiaphas spoke a profound prophetic truth about Jesus dying for the nation, not out of personal righteousness, but because of his office. God overrode his wicked intentions to proclaim His truth.

The New Testament Difference

There is a vast difference between the Spirit coming upon someone for a temporary task and the filling of the Spirit.

  • The Old Testament “Coming Upon”: Temporary placement, external empowerment, and given for specific tasks or prophetic utterances.
  • The New Testament “Filling”: Indwelling presence, internal transformation, and fruit-bearing character as seen in Acts 2:1-4.

Balaam possessed a temporary prophetic anointing, but his heart remained corrupted by greed and compromise. He had spiritual gifts without spiritual fruit.

The Warning for Us Today

This passage serves as a sobering reminder for modern believers. It is entirely possible to be used by God to bless others while remaining far from Him ourselves. Gifts, talents, and public ministry are never substitutes for internal holiness and a true relationship with Jesus Christ. We must seek the Giver, not just the gifts.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You that Your sovereign plans cannot be thwarted by human wickedness. Lord, deliver us from the trap of outward spirituality without inward transformation. Search our hearts today and see if there is any wicked way in us. We do not just want Your power to come upon us for a moment; we desire Your Holy Spirit to fill us, transform us, and produce lasting fruit. Keep our hearts pure, our motives clean, and our relationship with You vibrant. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

MY SOUL IS DOWNCAST / PSALMS 42:5-6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 42:5-6

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

When Your Soul Is Downcast: Finding Hope in the Silence

Have you ever felt like you are shouting into an empty room when you pray? You desire a deeper connection with God, you thirst for His presence, but the only response you hear is silence.

If your soul feels heavy and downcast today, you are not alone. Even the most faithful believers experience seasons where God feels distant and circumstances seem unyielding.

The Reality of a Downcast Soul

In Psalms 42:5-6, the psalmist wrestles openly with these exact feelings:

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.”

The writer does not mask his pain. He acknowledges the weight in his chest. Yet, in the very same breath, he makes a deliberate choice. He commands his downcast soul to remember God. When the present feels dark, he anchors his mind to the places where he previously witnessed God’s faithfulness.

Faith Beyond Our Feelings

True faith is not the absence of doubt or sadness; it is the decision to pursue God regardless of them.

Those who hunger and thirst for greater evidence of His presence often find themselves in God’s waiting room. It is easy to confuse God’s silence with His absence, but the two are never the same. Jesus promised that those “who hunger and thirst for righteousness” will be filled (Matthew 5:6). The fulfillment is guaranteed, even if the timing is not our own.

When things do not happen right away, the Holy Spirit uses the quiet seasons to do deep internal work. While we wait, He builds our character, strengthens our endurance, and draws us closer to His heart (Hosea 6:1-3; Ephesians 4:11-13).

Repositioning Your Hope

If you are waiting for a breakthrough, do not give up on seeking His unfailing love. Psalm 42 reminds us that even when the deep waves of life crash over us, “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me” (Psalm 42:8).

Turn your focus away from your shifting circumstances and fix your eyes on His unchanging character. Speak to your soul just as the psalmist did. Remind yourself of who God is, what He has already done, and what He has promised to do. Praise Him in the hallway while you wait for the next door to open.

A Closing Prayer for the Heavy Heart

Heavenly Father,

Right now, my soul feels downcast and disturbed within me. The weight of my circumstances feels heavy, and Your silence feels loud. Lord, You know my desire to feel Your presence and to see You move in my life. Forgive me for the times I let my feelings dictate my faith.

Today, I choose to put my hope in You. I choose to remember Your goodness, Your mercy, and Your past faithfulness when everything around me feels uncertain. Fill my spiritual hunger and thirst with Your righteousness. Grant me the patience to wait on Your perfect timing, and let Your Holy Spirit build character and strength inside me during this quiet season.

Thank You for Your unfailing love that surrounds me by day and the song You give me in the night. I will yet praise You, my Savior and my God.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

MY SOUL THIRSTS FOR GOD / PSALMS 42:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 42:2

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

The Thirst That Sustains Us: Finding True Wholeness in Psalms 42:2

We all know the physical sensation of dehydration. Your throat tightens, your energy plummets, and your entire body screams for a single drop of water. In those moments, nothing else matters. You do not want distractions, successes, or entertainment—you just want a drink.

In Psalms 42:2, the psalmist captures this exact desperation and applies it to our spiritual existence: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”

Just as water is absolute necessity for physical life, God and His presence are vital for our spiritual life. Without Him, we cannot experience complete satisfaction or wholeness in any area of our lives.

The Danger of Spiritual Dehydration

To stop thirsting for God is to die spiritually. Those who truly trust God will naturally hunger and thirst for a deeper relationship with Him. They long for His favor and expect His supernatural activity in their daily lives.

Yet, we live in a world filled with spiritual distractions. We easily allow the circumstances of life to choke out our divine hunger. These distractions include:

  • Worries and anxiety about the future.
  • Pressing needs that consume our thoughts.
  • Successes and achievements that breed self-sufficiency.
  • Attractions and temporary pleasures that satisfy only for a moment.

As Jesus warned in Mark 4:19, the worries of this life and the desire for other things can step in and choke the Word, making it unfruitful. These things rob us of the desire and the discipline needed to pursue God through His Word and prayer.

Cultivating a Passionate Pursuit

We must protect our spiritual appetite at all costs. We should actively pray that our desire for God’s presence becomes deeper and stronger every day.

This requires a greater openness to the Holy Spirit’s gifts, direction, and power. Our passion to see Christ’s purposes fulfilled on earth must grow until it drives us to passionate prayer. We must emulate the deer in Psalms 42:1 that “pants for streams of water” in times of drought. When we seek His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33), we receive the beautiful promise of Matthew 5:6: those who hunger and thirst for righteousness will be filled.

A Closing Prayer for Spiritual Thirst

Heavenly Father, thank You for being the living water that alone can satisfy my soul. Forgive me for the times I have tried to quench my thirst with the temporary pleasures and distractions of this world. Today, I pray that You would deepen my desire for Your presence.

Break through my worries, my successes, and my distractions, and stir up a holy hunger within me. Holy Spirit, I open myself to Your gifts, Your direction, and Your power. Grant me the discipline to pursue You daily through Your Word and prayer. Let my soul pant for You like a deer in the desert, until Your purposes are fulfilled in my life and on this earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THE SONS OF KORAH / PSALMS 42

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Psalms 42

Finding Hope in the Depths: A Journey Through Psalm 42

We all experience seasons where God feels distant. The landscape of the soul shifts from a vibrant garden to a dry, cracked desert. If you find yourself in that empty space today, you are not alone.

Thousands of years ago, a specific group of worship leaders wrestled with these exact feelings, and they left us a roadmap for navigating spiritual droughts.

Who Were the Sons of Korah?

The superscription of Psalms 42 attributes this piece to the Sons of Korah. Far from being random background figures, they were a dedicated family of singers and worship leaders from the Israelite tribe of Levi (2 Chronicles 20:19).

Their history is remarkable. They were descendants of Korah, a man who famously rebelled against Moses and perished. Yet, God in His mercy spared Korah’s children. Generations later, this family became the caretakers, doorkeepers, and premier worship leaders of God’s sanctuary.

When they sang about longing for God’s presence, they spoke as insiders who knew the beauty of the temple—and the agonizing pain of being exiled from it.

The Cry of the Thirsty Soul

Psalms 42 opens with one of the most vivid metaphors in all of Scripture:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42:1-2)

Notice that the psalmist does not thirst for answers, blessings, or an escape from trouble. They thirst for God Himself.

When you are in a spiritual desert, your greatest need is not a change in circumstances. It is a fresh encounter with the living God. The Sons of Korah teach us that it is entirely normal to feel this deep, aching hunger. Admitting your emptiness is the first step toward being filled.

    Honest Grief vs. Holy Hope

What makes Psalm 42 so relatable is its raw honesty. The writer is drowning in sorrow, noting that “my tears have been my food day and night” (Psalms 42:3). Enemies are taunting them, asking, “Where is your God?”

In the middle of this deep depression, the psalmist does something radical. They talk to themselves instead of just listening to themselves:

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalm 42:5)

This is the rhythm of faithful endurance. You acknowledge the pain, you validate the heaviness of your soul, and then you fiercely remind your heart of who God is. Memory is a powerful weapon against despair. The psalmist actively chooses to remember God’s past faithfulness to fuel tomorrow’s hope.

    Deep Calling to Deep

Even when the storms of life feel overwhelming—when “all your waves and breakers have swept over me” (Psalms 42:7)—God’s steady love remains the anchor. Psalms 42:8 reminds us: “By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me.”

If you are in the depths today, let the deep places of your pain call out to the deep places of God’s infinite mercy. The desert will not last forever. The streams of living water are on the way.

    A Closing Prayer

    Lord God, the Living Water,

Like the deer panting for streams of water, our souls cry out for You today. In seasons of dryness, loneliness, or overwhelming sorrow, remind us of Your steady presence. Forgive us for the times we look for satisfaction in things that cannot fill us.

We pray for everyone reading this who feels downcast or disturbed within their soul. Give them the strength to speak hope to their own hearts today. Direct Your love to them by day, and let Your song sustain them through the darkest nights.

Thank You for the legacy of the Sons of Korah, who showed us that we can be completely honest with our pain while remaining anchored in Your praise. We place our hope firmly in You, our Savior and our God.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME / PSALMS 41:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Psalms 41:9

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

The Ultimate Betrayal: When a Trusted Friend Lifts Their Heel

Have you ever been blindsided by someone you deeply trusted? Few wounds cut deeper than betrayal. It is a unique, agonizing pain that shatters our peace and leaves us questioning everything.

If you are walking through the painful aftermath of broken trust today, take comfort in this: Jesus completely understands your pain. Centuries before Christ walked the earth, King David penned a prophetic verse that perfectly captures this heartbreak, a verse that Jesus Himself would later quote on the hardest night of His earthly life.

    Let’s look at Psalm 41:9:

“Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.”

The Weight of the “Lifted Heel”

In ancient Near Eastern culture, sharing a meal was not just a casual hangout; it was a sacred bond. Eating bread at someone’s table signified covenant, mutual protection, and peace. To then turn around and “lift up your heel” is a vivid idiom. It evokes the imagery of a trusted workhorse or animal suddenly and brutally kicking its own master. It represents a swift, calculated, and devastating strike from someone who was supposed to have your back.

Historians believe King David wrote this while enduring the sting of his counselor Ahithophel joining Absalom’s rebellion. But this verse was also a shadow of a much weightier moment to come.

From Prophecy to Reality: Jesus and Judas

Fast forward to the Upper Room. In John 13:18, Jesus looks around at His disciples during the Last Supper and directly applies David’s words to His own situation: “But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'”

Jesus was talking about Judas Iscariot. Consider the depth of this betrayal:

Judas was a chosen companion: He traveled, slept, and ministered alongside Jesus for three years.

Judas held a position of trust: He was the treasurer of the ministry, managing their shared resources.

Judas shared the bread: Even as Judas harbored the plot to sell Jesus out for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14-16), he sat at the table and dipped his bread in the same dish as the Savior.

When Judas brought the mob to arrest Him in the garden, he used a kiss—the ultimate sign of affection—to seal the betrayal (Luke 22:47-48). Yet, even in that moment, Jesus looked at him and said, “Friend, do what you have come for.” (Matthew 26:50).

Finding Healing in the Wounds of Christ

Why did Jesus point out this prophecy beforehand? In John 13:19, He tells His disciples that He is warning them so that when it happens, they will believe He is who He says He is. He wanted them to know that Judas’s betrayal did not catch God off guard. It was factored into the grand plan of redemption.

If you have been betrayed, remember these truths:

    1. You are not alone. The Savior of the world knows exactly how it feels to be abandoned and deceived by an inner-circle friend.
    2. Betrayal does not break God’s plan for you. What people mean for evil, God can still weave into a tapestry of redemption and purpose. Judas’s dark choice led directly to the cross, which brought about our ultimate salvation.
    3. Jesus remains your faithful friend. People may fail you, kick out against you, or walk away, but Christ promises to never leave you nor forsake you.

Bring your broken heart, your anger, and your confusion to the feet of the One who was wounded for you. He is ready to bind up your wounds and give you the supernatural grace to heal.

    Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father,

I come to You today with a heart that knows the sting of betrayal. Lord, You know the exact person and the exact situation that has caused this deep ache inside of me. It hurts to be let down by someone I trusted, someone with whom I shared my life and my heart.

Thank You, Jesus, that You are not a distant Lord who cannot sympathize with my weaknesses. You know exactly what it feels like to have a close friend lift up their heel against You. Thank You for enduring the cross and the heartbreak of Judas so that I could know Your perfect, unshakeable love.

Right now, I release my pain, my resentment, and my desire for retaliation into Your hands. I ask for Your healing touch upon my broken trust. Guard my heart from bitterness, and help me to anchor my security in Your unchanging faithfulness rather than the fragile loyalty of people. Wrap me in Your peace and give me the strength to move forward, knowing that You will never abandon me. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

BLESSED IS HE WHO HAS REGARD FOR THE WEAK / PSALMS 41:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Psalms 41:1

Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.

The Power of Active Compassion: Understanding Psalm 41:1

We live in a world that often celebrates power, wealth, and self-sufficiency. Yet, God’s kingdom operates on a completely different economy. In the eyes of our Creator, true greatness is measured by how we treat the most vulnerable among us.

Psalms 41:1 delivers a profound truth: “Blessed is he who has regard for the weak.” This is not just a suggestion; it is a spiritual principle with eternal weight.

    A Echo of Mercy

The word “regard” means more than just noticing someone is in need. It implies active consideration, empathy, and deliberate action. When we show love and kindness to the needy, we reflect the very character of God.

This Old Testament wisdom perfectly aligns with the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:7: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Mercy is a boomerang. When we extend God’s compassion to others, we open the doors for His blessings to pour back into our own lives.

The Promises of God for the Merciful

Scripture reveals that God has a special concern for the helpless. When we align our hearts with His by caring for the vulnerable, Psalm 41 outlines several incredible promises we can pray over our lives with confidence:

    • Divine Deliverance: God promises to help and rescue us when we face our own times of trouble (Psalms 41:1).
    • Supernatural Protection: He guards our lives and preserves us from harm (Psalms 41:2).
    • Earthly Blessing: The Lord promises to bless our lives and sustain us here on earth (Psalms 41:2).
    • Victory Over Enemies: He silences the adversary and destroys the power of Satan over our destiny (Psalms 41:2).
    • Healing and Restoration: God cares for us, nurses us back to health, and sustains us on our sickbeds (Psalms 41:3).

From Genesis to Revelation, God’s heart for the poor and weak is undeniable. When we defend the helpless, we are doing the work of the Kingdom. Today, ask God to open your eyes to the “weak” in your community—whether they are financially poor, emotionally broken, or physically sick—and be the hands and feet of Jesus to them.

    Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father,

We thank You for Your endless mercy and for the deep compassion You hold for the weak, the helpless, and the brokenhearted. Forgive us for the times we have been too busy or self-absorbed to notice the needs of those around us.

We ask that You give us eyes to see people the way You see them. Soften our hearts and grant us the courage to act with active kindness. We stand on the truth of Your Word today, declaring that blessed is he who has regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble.

We pray for Your protection, Your healing touch, and Your strength to sustain us. May our lives be a living testimony of Your mercy to a hurting world.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen,

NOT A MAN THAT HE SHOULD LIE … CHANGE HIS MIND / NUMBERS 23:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Numbers 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

The Unwavering Character of God: Rock-Solid Truth and Holy Responsiveness

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. This powerful truth from Numbers 23:19 anchors our faith in a world where human promises are routinely broken. People are fickle, but God is completely dependable. Let’s explore the deep, beautiful mystery of His unchanging character and His responsive heart.

    The Rock-Solid Immutability of God

By His very nature, God is completely faithful to His covenants. He is not unreliable, foolish, or prone to random mood swings.

    • Perfect Integrity: God cannot deceive because His character defines absolute truth.
    • Flawless Execution: What He speaks, He brings to pass without delay or failure.
    • Eternal Consistency: His ultimate redemptive purposes remain fixed from age to age.

The Holy Exception: A Responsive Heart

While God’s eternal nature is unchangeable, He is not a cold, mechanical machine. His unwavering commitment to righteousness means He dynamically interacts with human choices. He adjusts His relational plans under specific, holy circumstances:

    1. The Intercession of His People
When Moses pleaded for Israel in Exodus 32:11, the Lord relented from the fierce disaster He threatened. Faithful prayer moves the hand of God.
    2. The Repentance of the Wicked
When the city of Nineveh repented in sackcloth and ashes, God changed His mind regarding their destruction as detailed in Jonah 3:1-10; Jonah 4:2.

Note: God’s shifting of a decree is not a correction of a mistake, but rather a righteous response to a change in human posture.

    Understanding the Difference

This table highlights the clear contrast between human instability and divine flexibility:

    Divine AttributeHuman FlawHoly Responsiveness
    FaithfulnessLying and deceitRelenting in mercy
    SovereigntyMaking foolish choicesHonoring sincere prayer
ImmutabilityChanging due to weaknessShifting due to repentance

    Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father,

We praise You because You are the King of kings, stable and secure. Thank You that You are not like frail humans who break promises, falter in commitment, or distort the truth. You are entirely trustworthy.

Lord, we thank You that Your ears are open to our cries. Thank You that You honor the intercession of Your saints and welcome the repentance of those who turn to You. Help us to rest securely in Your unchanging love while remaining bold in our prayers. Transform our hearts to align perfectly with Your holy will.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

    OPENED THE DONKEY’S MOUTH / NUMBERS 22:28

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Numbers 22:28

And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

The Voice of Conviction: When God Opens the Donkey’s Mouth

We have all experienced moments of stubbornness. We lock our eyes on a goal, block out the warnings around us, and charge forward. But few stories in Scripture expose the danger of spiritual blindness quite as vividly as the account of Balaam and his donkey in Numbers 22:28.

It is a bizarre, famous, and deeply sobering narrative. A pagan prophet, driven by the seductive promise of wealth and prestige, sets out on a journey that opposes God’s explicit will. Along the way, the unthinkable happens: “Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, ‘What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?'”

    Spiritual Blindness vs. Humble Discernment

The great irony of this story is the total reversal of roles. Balaam was a renowned seer—a man who prided himself on his spiritual sight and ability to commune with the supernatural. Yet, as he rode along the path, he was completely blind to the Angel of the Lord standing before him with a drawn sword.

Meanwhile, his beast of burden—a lowly donkey—saw the spiritual reality clearly.

Three times the donkey swerved to save Balaam’s life. Three times, Balaam retaliated with anger and violence, striking the animal in his blind rage. Balaam was so consumed by his own desires that he failed to recognize God’s mercy protecting him from destruction.

Centuries later, the New Testament reflects on this moment in 2 Peter 2:16, reminding us that the donkey “spoke with a man’s voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.”

Balaam’s “madness” was the insanity of greed and self-will. It is the same spiritual madness that grips us when we desire our own way so fiercely that we ignore the warning signs God places right in front of our faces.

How Is God Trying to Stop You?

God will use the most unexpected vessels to interrupt our rebellion. If a prophet refuses to listen to the Almighty, God can make a beast of burden preach a sermon.

This story forces us to look at our own lives and ask hard questions:

    • Are we ignoring the boundaries? When our plans get blocked or delayed, do we react with anger—like Balaam striking his donkey—or do we stop to ask if God is redirecting us?
    • Who are we refusing to listen to? God often speaks through the people we look down upon, or through circumstances we find frustrating and inconvenient.
    • Are we blinded by our goals? Ambition, greed, and the desire for validation can make us spiritually blind, marching us straight toward a sword of judgment while we think we are heading toward a reward.

Don’t wait for a donkey to speak to realize you are heading in the wrong direction. God’s ultimate desire is not to ruin our plans, but to save our lives. When He blocks your path, it is not rejection; it is redirection and protection.

    Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father,

Examine my heart today. Forgive me for the times I have been blinded by my own ambitions, my anger, and my stubbornness. Soften my heart so that I do not suffer from the spiritual madness that refuses to see Your hand at work.

Lord, open my eyes to see the spiritual realities around me. Give me the humility to welcome Your interruptions. If I am marching down a path of self-destruction, I ask that You block my way. Speak to me through Your Word, Your Spirit, and even the unexpected vessels in my life.

Help me to live with an open mind and an obedient heart, trusting that Your boundaries are always for my protection.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

GOD WAS VERY ANGRY / NUMBERS 22:22

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Numbers 22:22

And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.

The Danger of Half-Hearted Obedience: Lessons from Balaam’s Donkey

We have all been there. We ask God for direction, but deep down, we already know what we want to do. We look for a loophole, a green light, or a concession that allows us to pursue our own desires while keeping up the appearance of faith.

This is the exact trap we see in Numbers 22:22: “But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him.”

At a glance, this passage puzzles many readers. Didn’t God just tell Balaam he could go with King Balak’s messengers? Why would GOD BE VERY ANGRY at Balaam for doing exactly what He permitted?

The answer lies in the condition of Balaam’s heart, his lingering greed, and a profound spiritual blindness that required a talking donkey to cure.

    1. Permission is Not the Same as Approval

King Balak of Moab was terrified of the Israelites, so he offered Balaam a massive fortune to place a prophetic curse on them. God’s initial answer to Balaam was an absolute, non-negotiable “No”. He told him: “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.”

But when Balak sent a second, more prestigious entourage offering even more wealth, Balaam hesitated. Instead of standing firm on God’s clear boundary, he went back to ask again.

God finally permitted him to go, but strictly on the condition that he only say what God commanded. However, Balaam didn’t wait for the proper conditions; he eagerly jumped out of bed, saddled his donkey, and rushed off. God was angry because He saw Balaam’s true motive: he was still actively considering Balak’s offer and harboring greed for personal gain. He wanted the money, and he wanted to find a way to circumvent God’s will.

    2. The Tragedy of Spiritual Blindness

What follows is one of the most famous—and sobering—narratives in the Old Testament. As Balaam rides along, the Angel of the Lord stands in the path with a drawn sword, ready to execute him.

Remarkably, the prophet cannot see the spiritual reality right in front of him. But his donkey can.

    • The First Time: The donkey veers off the path into a field to save Balaam’s life, and Balaam beats her.
    • The Second Time: The donkey crushes Balaam’s foot against a wall trying to squeeze past the Angel, and he beats her again.
    • The Third Time: With nowhere left to turn, the donkey simply lays down under Balaam, prompting a third furious beating.

Balaam’s spiritual blindness was complete. A pagan diviner who claimed to see visions from the Almighty was completely oblivious to the judgment standing mere feet away. He was so consumed by his anger, pride, and desire for wealth that he missed the supernatural completely—until God opened the donkey’s mouth to rebuke him.

As the Angel of the Lord later notes in Numbers 22:32-33, if the donkey had not turned away, Balaam would be dead. The animal he was beating was actually his savior.

    3. The Takeaway for Our Lives

Balaam’s error, which is heavily warned against in 2 Peter 2:15-16, is the danger of walking in outward compliance while harboring inward rebellion. We can easily fall into the same trap when we:

    • Pray until we get the answer we want, rather than accepting the clear boundaries God has already set in His Word.
    • Force open doors that God has clearly shut, confusing His allowance of our free will with His divine blessing.
    • Lash out at the obstacles in our lives (our metaphorical “donkeys”), failing to realize that the delay, the closed door, or the frustration might actually be God’s mercy blocking us from destruction.

Outward obedience without an aligned heart is a dangerous path. God desires our full devotion, not our reluctant compliance while we keep flirting with the world’s rewards.

    Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father,

Forgive us for the times we have tried to negotiate with Your clear commands. Search our hearts today, Lord. If there is any hidden greed, pride, or desire to compromise Your truth for personal gain, expose it and clean it by Your Holy Spirit.

Open our spiritual eyes so that we do not walk in blindness. Give us the discernment to recognize Your hand, even when it comes in the form of a closed door, a delay, or a frustrating obstacle. Help us to see Your protection in our interruptions.

We pray for a heart that does not just seek Your permission, but deeply desires Your presence and Your perfect will. Grant us the grace to obey You fully, purely, and with undivided devotion.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THE LORD MY GOD / NUMBERS 22:18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

    (KJV) Numbers 22:18

And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more.

The Danger of Empty Devotion: Lessons from Balaam

We often find profound warnings in the most unexpected places in Scripture. One of the most striking examples is the story of Balaam in Numbers 22.

When a wealthy king offers him a fortune to curse God’s people, Balaam responds with words that sound deeply pious: “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the LORD my God.” (Numbers 22:18).

He calls Him “the LORD my God.” It sounds like a statement of absolute surrender. Yet, the rest of Scripture pulls back the curtain on Balaam’s heart, revealing a dangerous truth: you can use the right spiritual language while your heart is far from God.

A God of Convenience, Not Commitment

Balaam was a pagan prophet. When he called Yahweh “my God,” he was likely not expressing exclusive loyalty. Instead, he was simply adding the God of Israel to his personal pantheon of deities. To Balaam, God was a source of power to be tapped and a means to an end.

The New Testament writers do not remember Balaam for his beautiful confession in Numbers 22:18. Instead, they remember his greed.

    • Deuteronomy 23:3-6 reveals that God turned Balaam’s intended curse into a blessing.
    • 2 Peter 2:15-16 warns against those who follow the way of Balaam, “who loved the wages of wickedness.”
    • Jude 1:11 speaks of those who rush profit-driven into “Balaam’s error.”

Balaam wanted the financial reward Balak offered, and he spent his entire journey trying to find a loophole in God’s clear commands. He spoke the language of faith, but his true master was money.

The Modern Parallel: Is He Your Lord?

Balaam’s story forces us to look in the mirror. It is easy to adopt Christian vocabulary, attend church, and claim relationship with God when it is socially or personally advantageous. We might say “the Lord my God” on Sunday, but do our choices on Monday reflect that reality?

True devotion is not about adding God to our lives as a cosmic insurance policy or a tool for personal gain. It is about total submission. If we only obey God when it aligns with our financial interests, our comfort, or our reputation, we are walking in the error of Balaam. God does not want to be one of many priorities in our lives; He demands to be the ultimate authority.

    Closing Prayer

    Heavenly Father, Almighty God,

We come before You today humbled by the warning of Balaam’s life. Lord, forgive us for the times our lips have honored You while our hearts were pursuing our own selfish desires, wealth, or comfort. Search our hearts today. Strip away any hidden hypocrisy, double-mindedness, or compromise.

We pray that You would not just be the Lord we speak of, but the Lord we surrender to entirely. Let our obedience be driven by love for righteousness, not love for personal gain. Guard our hearts against greed and the subtle trap of compromise. May our actions always match our confession, and may You truly be our Lord, our Savior, and our greatest treasure.

    In Jesus’ name, Amen.
