Justification (being made right with God, declared “not guilty” in relation to God) involves not only the redeeming (spiritually saving and restoring) work of the Lord Jesus, but also the work of the Spirit of God in the believer’s life.

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

THE WICKED WILL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM

Some in Corinth were deceived into believing that even if they were unfaithful to Christ, abandoning their relationship with Him and defying Him through immoral or unjust behavior, their salvation and inheritance in God’s kingdom were still secure. 

  1. However, Paul affirms that spiritual death is the sure and final result of habitual sin, even for those who were believers at one time (Romans 8:13). No one can live for selfish or immoral pleasure and still have a part in God’s eternal kingdom (Romans 6:16; James 1:15; 1 John 2:4; 1 John 3:9). Paul repeats this foundational teaching often (Galatians 5:21 and Ephesians 5:5; Ephesians 5:6). Notice that this principle was frequently communicated by the Old Testament prophets (Jeremiah 8:7; 23:17; Ezekiel 3:10).
  2. Paul’s warning is directed to the whole Christian community. We must not be deceived: those who are “wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Any “salvation” that does not include the life-transforming, spiritually purifying and character-building work of the Holy Spirit is not genuine and has no place in New Testament teaching.

Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

BEFORE THE UNGODLY / 1 CORINTHIANS 6:1

When Christians disagree on trivial or insignificant issues (1 Corinthians 6:2), they should be settled within the church and not in courts of law. The church must be capable of judging the right or wrong involved, making a fair decision and exercising godly discipline, if needed (Matthew 18:15).

  1. This teaching does not mean that a Christian may not use courts in serious cases with unbelievers. Paul himself appealed to the judicial system more than once (Acts 16:37-39; 25:10-12).
  2. By implying that Christians might sometimes be better off overlooking others’ offenses against them (1 Corinthians 6:7), Paul is certainly not encouraging church members to unlawfully abuse or mistreat the innocent, such as widows, children or the disadvantaged. Rather, Paul was speaking of issues where there was not a clear answer to the offense. Openly harmful actions must not be tolerated, but offenses within the church body should be handled according to Christ’s instruction in Matthew 18:15-17.
  3. In addition, in cases where a “brother” who is no longer faithful in his relationship with God has divorced or deserted his family and refuses to support his wife and children, a mother with the right motives and concern for her kids may take action in the courts. Paul is not advocating that those who neglect their social or civil responsibilities or who break the law be allowed to cheat and threaten the life or well-being of others. His statement in 1 Corinthians 6:8 indicates he is speaking of minor disputes where the offense could be excused and tolerated.

JUDGE THOSE INSIDE / 1 CORINTHIANS 5:10-12

While Christians are to take a stand against evil and avoid the ungodly practices of the world, their judgment is not to be aimed at those outside of the church (1 Corinthians 5:10), who are still caught up in sinful behavior. Those whom church members are to judge and restrict their contact with are individuals within the church (1 Corinthians 5:9, 11) who claim to follow Christ but dishonor Him with their openly immoral behavior. While Christians must not unjustly criticize other Christians (Matthew 7:1-5), they must still hold each other accountable to the standard of God’s Word when serious sin or persistent ungodly conduct is involved. Such wicked actions demand judgment and discipline for the sake of the person involved, as well as the purity and influence of the church on those who do not know Christ (1 Corinthians 5:1).

Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

Paul uses a comparison between a common element that they all knew of and the spiritual principle that the church needs to learn about purity and discipline in the church. He uses the example of yeast being forbidden when preparing the bread to be eaten at the Passover Feast (Exodus 12:15). In the Bible, “yeast” (which brings about a reaction that causes change) is often mentioned as a symbol of evil or sin. Like the yeast, sin is able to spread through an entire church congregation or Christian community and corrupt its commitment to truth and authentic spiritual life (Galatians 5:7-9; Exodus 13:7; Mark 8:15). Any church that does not take radical action against sexual immorality among its members will find the influence of evil spreading throughout the congregation and infecting many. Eventually, this can cause the Holy Spirit to withdraw His godly influence and power from the church (Revelation 2-3).

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

HAND THIS MAN OVER TO SATAN / 1 CORINTHIANS 5:4-5

To “hand … over to Satan” means that the church must expel the immoral person from its congregation and allow the individual to go his or her own way. This will, in turn, expose the person to the destructive influences of evil and the demonic (1 Corinthians 5:7, 13).

  1. This severe discipline has two purposes: (a) that the offender, by experiencing difficult problems and even physical suffering, may humbly turn to God for help and forgiveness and, in the end, be saved (Luke 15:11-24); (b) that the church may “get rid of the old yeast” (1 Corinthians 5:7, sinful influences) so that God’s people may become like fresh bread of “sincerity and truth” (1 Corinthians 5:8).
  2. The same action can be taken by churches today in an effort to bring spiritually rebellious individuals to the point in their worldly behavior that they find nowhere to turn but back to God (1 Timothy 1:20).

Paul expresses what should be the normal reaction of a Spirit-filled, Spirit-guided church when immoral behavior is found among its members who claim to follow Christ. Those who embrace the Biblical view of God’s holiness (purity, perfection, completeness of character and separation from evil) and His grief over sin will be moved to a deep sense of sorrow and regret (Isaiah 6). As a result, they will remove wickedness from among them (1 Corinthians 5:2, 4-5, 7, 13; Matthew 18:15).

It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

SEXUAL IMMORALITY AMONG YOU

Paul writes about a report of extreme sexual misconduct in the Corinthian church and the refusal of church leaders to deal with the offender (1 Corinthians 5:1-8). He declares that the church, as a holy people, must not permit or tolerate immoral behavior among its members. He gives three reasons why the church should discipline those who defy God and His standards in this way:

  1. For the good of the offenders (1 Corinthians 5:5). Being expelled from the congregation might awaken them to the seriousness of their sin and their need for forgiveness and spiritual restoration.
  2. For the sake of the church’s purity (1 Corinthians 5:6-8). Tolerating evil within a church – among those who follow Christ in words only – will gradually lower the moral standards of most others in the church, causing them to become comfortable with sin.
  3. For the good of the world (1 Corinthians 5:1). The church cannot influence others to follow Christ and become part of His church if it is seen as not different than the world (Matthew 5:13) or if it fails to be an accurate example of Christ’s character. (Matthew 5:22; Matthew 18:15-17; 2 Thessalonians 3:6; Revelation 2:19-23).

HAS HIS FATHER’S WIFE

The exact sin is not clear. Paul’s reference to “his father’s wife” probably means the offender was sexually involved with his stepmother.

  1. Paul was horrified that the church would tolerate such immorality. He views this ungodly acceptance of this sin in the church to be as serious as the actual sin itself. 
  2. The permissiveness (willing acceptance of something as right that God disapproves of) of the Corinthians speaks to our situation today. Many churches are tolerant of and silent about immoral behavior among their members, including adultery and all forms of sexual impurity. Premarital sexual activity is not only tolerated but at times justified as expressions of love and commitment. Many leaders fail to challenge the unhealthy and often immoral dating habits common among many of today’s youth. Like the Corinthian leaders, they refuse to grieve over the spiritual corruption within the church. As a result, the believers become more and more like the society in which they live.

KINGDOM OF GOD … POWER / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:20

The “kingdom of God” reveals itself in power, which means that members of God’s kingdom must have more than talk and a good message; they must demonstrate a living witness of the power of the Spirit as well (1 Corinthians 2:4; Acts 1:8). In the New Testament, this power was strong and seen by the people enough to convince them of their sin, their accountability to God and their need to get right with Him (John 16:8). The openness allowed people to receive God’s forgiveness and to enter a personal relationship with God through faith in Christ (1 Corinthians 4:15; Acts 26:16-18). The power of God’s kingdom is also evident through the working of miracles (1 Corinthians 2:4) and the ability to do what is right by God’s standard (Romans 14:17).

Now Paul describes some of the difficulties endured by the apostles – those personally commissioned by Christ to deliver His original message and lead the effort of establishing His church. The verb “put on display” gives a picture of the gladiator contests in the arena (or perhaps a victory procession of a Roman general parading his prisoners through the city). It suggests that God has appointed the apostles to a life of adversity, inconvenience and suffering to be seen by the world, by angels and by the church.

  1. Paul’s circumstances even at that time (as he wrote from Ephesus) involved such things as lack of food, drink and proper clothing. He has been despised, mistreated and has no home. He has worked hard night and day; and yet, he is cursed, persecuted, slandered and considered the “scum of the earth, the refuse [trash] of the world” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9; 6:4-5, 8-10; 11:23-29; 12:10).
  2. Although suffering was in one sense a special condition of Paul’s ministry as an apostle (Acts 9:16), it is also the common experience of all true believers who are loyal to Christ and are opposed to sin, Satan, evil and injustice. Their difficulties are a means of sharing and identifying with Christ’s suffering (Romans 8:17; Philippians 1:29; 3:10; 1 Thessalonians 3:3).
