In Joshua 24:1, we witness a defining milestone of spiritual leadership. At the very end of his life, Joshua gathers all the tribes of Israel together at Shechem. He does not use his final moments to build a personal monument or boast about his military victories. Instead, he directs the community’s absolute attention to God’s goodness, care, and unmerited grace over the years.

Deflecting Self, Exalting God

True leadership under God always deflects human praise to magnify His honor. Throughout Joshua 24:2-13, Joshua details how God delivered, protected, and sustained the nation.

By reminding them of this history, he establishes the foundation for his ultimate challenge:

  • Serve with sincerity: Rejecting competing modern-day idols and cultural distractions.
  • Choose loyalty: Renewing a deep, personal commitment to the Lord.
  • Live with passion: Expressing deep love for God through daily obedience and joyful, holy living.

Our calling today remains identical. Spiritual maturity means constantly challenging ourselves—and those we influence—to love God with passion and serve Him with pure joy.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unwavering goodness and care throughout our lives. Forgive us for the times we have let distractions crowd out our devotion to You. Give us the courage to choose You every single day, to throw away modern idols, and to serve You in sincerity and truth. Empower our leaders to focus on Your honor rather than their own name. May our households be known as places that joyfully serve the Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
