BOOK OF THE LAW MEDITATE ON IT DAY AND NIGHT / JOSHUA 1:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Joshua 1:8

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

The Blueprint for True Success: Living out Joshua 1:8

We all want to succeed. We buy books, listen to podcasts, and plan our days to achieve our goals. But the world’s version of success is often exhausting and temporary.

Millenniums ago, God gave Joshua a foolproof blueprint for true, lasting success. Joshua was facing a massive task. Moses was dead, and Joshua had to lead millions of people into the Promised Land.

God did not give Joshua a military strategy manual. Instead, He gave him an instruction that changes how we view success today:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8)

Let’s break down what this timeless verse means for your life today.

1. Immerse Yourself in the Word

God tells Joshua to keep the “Book of the Law” on his lips. For Joshua, this meant the first five books of the Bible—God’s direct words, commands, and revelations given to Moses.

To keep it on your lips means to talk about it consistently. True success starts when God’s truth becomes the natural vocabulary of your daily life, guiding your conversations and shaping your worldview.

2. Meditate Day and Night

The word “meditate” in Hebrew is hagah. It does not mean emptying your mind. It means to read quietly, whisper to yourself, and deeply ponder something.

To meditate on Scripture means to study it carefully so you can grasp its deepest meaning. It is not a quick morning glance at a verse. It is an ongoing, day-and-night habit of filtering your thoughts, decisions, and struggles through the lens of God’s truth.

3. Move from Meditation to Obedience

Knowledge without action is empty. God told Joshua to meditate so that he would be careful to do everything written in it.

Studying the Bible should always lead to a changed life. True success requires making God’s Word your ultimate authority and applying its principles to your relationships, your career, and your private moments.

4. Redefining Prosperity and Success

When you look at Joshua 1:8, the promise of being “prosperous and successful” stands out. However, God’s definition of success is vastly different from the world’s definition.

Joshua 1:8 is not a guarantee of material wealth, fancy cars, or a trouble-free life. Sometimes, walking in God’s will includes seasons of suffering and adversity.

True biblical success means possessing the wisdom to do what is right. It means achieving God’s goals for your life and fulfilling His divine purposes. Walking out your God-given purpose is the highest and most rewarding success you can ever experience.

The Four Keys to a Successful Life

Based on God’s instructions to Joshua, we can apply four general principles to our lives today:

  • Be strong and courageous in the face of uncertainty.
  • Make God’s Word your guiding authority for every belief and action.
  • Study and meditate daily on the scriptures.
  • Recognize and respond to God’s presence in every single area of your life.

Commit today to open your Bible, whisper its truths to yourself, and step out in bold obedience.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your Word. It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Forgive us for the times we have chased the world’s version of success and neglected Your truth.

Lord, grant us the hunger to meditate on Your Word day and night. Help us to not just be hearers of the Word, but doers also. Give us the strength and courage we need to face the challenges before us today. Remind us continually of Your presence, and let Your wisdom guide our every decision.

We align our lives with Your purposes, knowing that true success is found in fulfilling Your will. May our lives bring glory and honor to Your name.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
