START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Joshua 1:5
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
Walking in the Certainty of His Presence: A Study of Joshua 1:5
We all face moments when the future looks daunting, the territory feels unfamiliar, and our own strength feels entirely inadequate. In those seasons, fear loves to whisper that we are completely on our own.
But God speaks a far better word over your life.
When Joshua took over the leadership of Israel after the death of Moses, he faced an monumental task. He was stepping into the shoes of a legendary leader and preparing to guide millions of people into a heavily fortified Promised Land. It was in this exact moment of transition and intense pressure that God gave him a foundational promise:
“No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Joshua 1:5
This was not a temporary boost of self-esteem. It was a rock-solid guarantee from the Creator of the universe. Today, that very same promise belongs to you.
An Unchanging Promise for Your Battles
The beauty of God’s Word is that His foundational promises do not expire with the changing of generations. The same assurance given on the banks of the Jordan River is echoed throughout Scripture for every believer navigating the struggles of life by faith:
- Before the battle began: God gave this exact same reassurance to Israel through Moses in Deuteronomy 31:6, telling them to be strong and courageous because God goes with them.
- The authority behind it: This promise is backed by the eternal, self-existing God who revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14 as “I AM WHO I AM.”
- The New Testament reality: In Hebrews 13:5-6, the author reminds us of this exact covenant to guard our hearts against fear and anxiety, boldly declaring, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”
Whether you are navigating a difficult career transition, a painful season of grief, or the daily grind of walking by faith, you can stand secure. The “I AM” is standing right beside you.
Emmanuel: God Physically With Us
In the Old Testament, God’s presence hovered in a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. But God chose to bring this promise even closer to human experience.
Through Jesus Christ, the promise of Joshua 1:5 took on flesh and bone. Matthew 1:23 reminds us of the profound prophecy fulfilled in His birth: “They will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
Jesus lived, suffered, and conquered death so that the barrier between us and God could be permanently torn down. He secured our victory, and before He ascended to heaven, He gave His followers a modern-day commission paired with the ultimate reassurance: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
Filled and Empowered by the Holy Spirit
God’s presence is not just a historical fact or a future hope—it is your present reality right now.
Before Jesus left the earth, He told His disciples to wait in the city until they were “clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). That power arrived through the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Today, God does not merely walk beside you; by faith, His Spirit lives inside you. You have continuous access to His comfort, His wisdom, and His supernatural strength. You do not have to muster up the courage to face tomorrow on your own. You simply need to lean into the reality of the Holy Spirit who is already there.
No matter what mountains stand in your way today, take a deep breath and remember: He will never leave you. He will never forsake you. Step forward in bold faith.
A Closing Prayer for God’s Presence
Heavenly Father,
Thank You that I never have to walk through the trials of this life alone. Forgive me for the times I allow fear and anxiety to make me forget that You are near. Today, I anchor my heart in Your ancient, unchanging promise: You will be with me, and You will never leave me nor forsake me.
Thank You for sending Your Son, Immanuel, to be God with us, and for sealing me with the power of Your Holy Spirit. When the territory ahead looks daunting, give me the supernatural courage and strength that only comes from Your presence. Help me to step out in bold obedience, knowing that wherever I go, You are already there.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
