(KJV) Joshua 13:1

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

The Season of Shift: Finding Faith When the Journey Changes

We often view faith as an endless sprint toward an ultimate victory. In the first half of the book of Joshua, the narrative is filled with rapid movement, miraculous victories, and intense battles. Under Joshua’s leadership, Israel aggressively moved into Canaan, systematically dismantling organized resistance until the land finally “had rest from war” (Joshua 11:23).

Then, we hit a sudden, quiet transition at the start of the book’s second major section.

“When Joshua had grown old, the Lord said to him, ‘You are now very old, and there are still large areas of land to be taken over.’” (Joshua 13:1)

It is a striking, deeply human moment. Joshua, the mighty warrior who stood alongside Moses, is facing the reality of his own physical limitations. The macro-war was won, yet substantial territory still remained to be conquered.

This passage reveals two powerful truths about how God works through our changing seasons.

1. God Values Your Legacy Over Your Longevity

Joshua’s role was forced to pivot. He could no longer lead the physical charge onto the battlefield, but his mission was not over. God shifted Joshua’s instructions from direct conquest to strategic distribution. His new assignment was to empower the next generation, allocating the remaining inheritance to the tribes so they could complete the work.

When your physical energy, career circumstances, or life seasons change, it doesn’t mean your usefulness to the Kingdom has expired. God gracefully adjusts our responsibilities to match our limits, transitioning us from frontline doers to wise builders of legacy.

2. Unfinished Business Requires Present Faith

Even though the land was at peace from major regional warfare, local pockets of resistance remained. It can be discouraging to realize that a major breakthrough in life doesn’t automatically mean all our minor struggles disappear.

The unfinished territory in our lives—whether it is a stubborn habit, an unresolved relationship, or a lingering doubt—is not a sign of God’s failure. It is an invitation to keep trusting Him. God promised that He would personally drive out the remaining inhabitants. Our job is simply to step forward in obedience, taking possession of what He has already secured for us.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unwavering faithfulness across every season of my life. When I feel the weight of my own limitations, remind me that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness. Help me to gracefully accept the shifts in my life, trust You with the unfinished territory ahead, and faithfully pass the torch of faith to those around me. I rest in the assurance that what You have promised, You will surely complete. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
