I MAKE MYSELF A SLAVE TO EVERYONE / 1 CORINTHIANS 9:19

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 1 Corinthians 9:19

For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.

The Art of Letting Go: Becoming a “Slave to Everyone” for the Gospel

We live in a world obsessed with rights, personal freedom, and self-expression. Every day, culture tells us to stand our ground, demand our due, and never compromise our preferences.

Then we read the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:19: “Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.”

At first glance, this sounds shocking. Why would a free man choose slavery?

Paul is not talking about losing his identity or becoming a people-pleaser. He is talking about the ultimate expression of Christian love: the voluntary surrender of rights for the sake of others.

Rights vs. Relationships

In the chapters leading up to this verse, Paul addresses a community divided over personal preferences and cultural customs. He establishes a profound truth: just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.

Paul used his own life as the ultimate example of self-denial. He had the right to demand financial support, the right to eat certain foods, and the right to live according to his own comforts. Yet, he willingly laid those rights down.

He did this out of loving consideration for the spiritual convictions of others. He knew that demanding his own way could inadvertently put up a barrier between a searching soul and the message of Jesus Christ.

What it Means (and What it Doesn’t)

To understand Paul’s heart, we have to look at what this radical flexibility actually looks like in daily life:

  • It is NOT people-pleasing: Paul was not trying to win popularity contests or gain human esteem. In Galatians 1:10, he makes it clear that if he were still trying to please men, he would not be a servant of Christ.
  • It is NOT moral compromise: Making oneself a “slave to everyone” does not mean violating Christian faith or biblical principles. Paul never sinned to reach the sinner.
  • It IS cultural flexibility: It means being prepared to conform to the legitimate, non-sinful convictions of the people you are trying to help.
  • It IS tactical empathy: It means entering someone else’s world, understanding their conscience, and refusing to offend them over minor issues so that you don’t cut off your ministry to them.

Meeting People Where They Are

If we ignore what others consider right or wrong in their consciences, we close the door to their hearts. If our insistence on our personal liberty breaks someone else’s spirit, we are no longer walking in love.

Paul’s strategy was simple: meet people exactly where they are. To the weak, he became weak. To those under the law, he met them in their traditions. He became all things to all people so that by all possible means he might save some.

True freedom in Christ is not the right to do whatever we want. True freedom is the power to lay down our preferences so that someone else can see the Savior.

What rights, comforts, or arguments are you holding onto today that might be hindering someone else from seeing Christ in you? Let us pray for the grace to let them go.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the ultimate example of self-denial in Your Son, Jesus Christ, who emptied Himself and took the form of a servant for our sake. Forgive us for the times we have prioritized our own rights, comforts, and opinions over the spiritual well-being of the people around us.

Give us the humility and wisdom of the Apostle Paul. Help us to see where our liberties might be causing others to stumble. Fill our hearts with a love so profound that we willingly lay down our preferences to build bridges instead of walls.

Open our eyes to the convictions of those we encounter this week. May our lives never hinder the message of the cross. Use us, break us, and mold us so that by all possible means, we might point hurting souls to You.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen
