JESUS GREW IN WISDOM / LUKE 2:52

(KJV) Luke 2:52

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

JESUS GREW IN WISDOM / LUKE 2:52

This is all the Bible tells us about Jesus’ teen and young adult years. Between Luke 2:52 and Luke 3:1, approximately eighteen years of Jesus’ life passed. Yet, this brief statement gives us a good overview of Jesus’ overall development. From other passages describing the later years of Jesus’ life, we get a further glimpse of His life. From Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3, we learn that He grew up in a large family, that His father was a carpenter, and that Jesus learned the trade. Since Joseph is never mentioned again in the Gospels (the accounts of Jesus’ life according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), it is likely that Joseph died before Jesus began His public ministry and that Jesus provided for His mother and younger brothers and sisters. The carpenter’s trade included household repairs, furniture making and constructing tools used for agriculture, such as plows and yokes. During all these years, we are told that He became a very well-rounded individual, developing mentally (wisdom), physically (stature), socially and spiritually (in favor with men and God) – fully conscious that God was His Father (Luke 2:49).

I HAD TO BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE / LUKE 2:49-51

(KJV) Luke 2:49-51

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business? 50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

I HAD TO BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE / LUKE 2:49-51

Jesus was not dyeing His parents; this was a time when His higher mission in life took priority over what was convenient. He had come to earth to fulfill His heavenly Father’s purposes; that was His primary duty. Notice how Jesus contrasted “my Father” (God) with Mary’s “Your father” (Luke 2:48). This was not a matter of disrespect because even at age 12 Jesus was aware of His unique relationship to God. Still, He obeyed His parents when they came to take Him home (Luke 2:51).

THE CHILD GREW / LUKE 2:40

(Luke 2:39-40

And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

THE CHILD GREW / LUKE 2:40

As a true human child, Jesus experienced the process of physical and spiritual development. He kept increasing in wisdom as God’s favor was upon His life. He was perfect in His human nature – like no one else who has ever lived – developing exactly as God desired in every way.

ANNA … WORHIPED / LUKE 2:36-38

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 2:36-38

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

ANNA … WORHIPED / LUKE 2:36-38

Anna was a prophetess who, like Simeon, had hoped and prepared for a long time for the coming of Christ. She remained a widow for many years, devoting herself completely to God and “fasting and praying” night and day. The Bible teaches that being single can be a great blessing and benefit in serving God. The missionary Paul states in one of his New Testament letters that those who are unmarried have greater opportunity to focus their concerns and efforts on God’s purposes. It is easier for them to give their undivided attention and devotion to God Himself (1 Corinthians 7:32-35).

A SWORD WILL PIERCE YOUR OWN SOUL / LUKE 2:33-35

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 2:33-35

And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 34 And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 35 (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

A SWORD WILL PIERCE YOUR OWN SOUL / LUKE 2:33-35

The piercing of the sword meant a future of great suffering for Mary, as well as Jesus, because people would reject Christ. This is the first reference in Luke’s Gospel to the suffering and death of Christ.

RIGHTEOUS AND DEVOUT – WAITING FOR THE CONSOLATION / LUKE 2:25-32

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 2:25-30

And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

RIGHTEOUS AND DEVOUT – WAITING FOR THE CONSOLATION / LUKE 2:25-32

RIGHTEOUS AND DEVOUT

“Righteous” or “upright” (Luke 1:6) translates the Greek word dikaios (Hebrew yasher), meaning “straight.” In the Old Testament, this word meant more than just conforming to the commandments; it meant that a person was in a right relationship with God – both in heart and in action (Psalms 32:2).

  1. The righteousness that God desired in people’s lives throughout the Old Testament was a spiritual condition of one’s heart and was based on true faith, love and reverence for God (Deuteronomy 4:10, 29; 5:29). This was evident in the parents of John the Baptist, who observed “all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly” (Luke 1:6; Genesis 7:1; 17:1; 1 Kings 9:4, where the term includes “integrity of heart”). The same characteristics were found in the life of Simeon.
  2. People who were referred to as “righteous” were not morally perfect and faultless (Job 1:1). Yet they followed God sincerely and relied on Him wholeheartedly. When they sinned (failed or offended God), they obeyed His requirements and received forgiveness by presenting an animal sacrifice to God in an attitude of true faith and repentance – turning from their own way and following God (Leviticus 4:27-35).

WAITING FOR THE CONSOLATION

In a time of terrible spiritual conditions in Israel and throughout the world, Simeon was devoted to God and guided by the Holy Spirit. He had been waiting with faith, patience and great desire for the coming of the Messiah (Savior Christ). In the last days before Christ returns for His church (all His faithful followers worldwide), most people in the world will be living in a terrible spiritual condition. Many will abandon their faith in Christ and stop looking and living for His coming (Titus 2:13). Yet there will always be those who are faithful, like Simeon. Others may place their hope in temporary, worldly things; but God’s faithful followers will be like the loyal servant described in Matthew 24:45-47, who stayed alert through the long, dark night, waiting for his master to return. Our greatest hope and desire should be to see face to face “the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:26; Revelation 22:4) and to live forever in His presence. That reality only comes if we are ready when He comes (Revelation 21 – 22).

And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

The offering of a pair of doves was a sign that Joseph and Mary were relatively poor at the time (Leviticus 12:8). From the very beginning Christ was identified with common and underprivileged people (Luke 9:58; Matthew 8:20; Revelation 2:9).

PRESENT HIM TO THE LORD / LUKE 2:22-23

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 2:22-23 22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

PRESENT HIM TO THE LORD / LUKE 2:22-23

Just as Joseph and Mary went to the temple to dedicate Jesus to God’s service, all parents should sincerely dedicate their children to God and commit to raise them in a way that honors Him. They should pray continually that from the beginning to the end of each child’s life, they will commit themselves to Christ and be devoted to honoring Him and fulfilling God’s plans for them.

THEY SPREAD THE WORD / LUKE 2:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 2:17-18

And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

THEY SPREAD THE WORD / LUKE 2:17

Jesus’ birth was not first announced to royalty or people of high social status and influence. It is likely that such people would have been preoccupied with other concerns. Intellectuals would have been skeptical, and authorities would have been insecure about what Christ’s coming would mean for their own position (King Herod, Matthew 2:13). But the shepherds were common people – the kind who would almost always receive Jesus’ message with more enthusiasm. They responded to the message by going to see what they had heard about. After they had seen Jesus, they spread the good news about Him without shame or hesitation.

A SAVIOR … CHRIST THE LORD / LUKE 2:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Luke 2:11

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

A SAVIOR … CHRIST THE LORD / LUKE 2:11

At his birth, Jesus is called “a Savior.”

  1. As savior, He has come to rescue us from sin and its most costly result: spiritual death and separation from God. This mission includes freeing us from Astan’s power, preserving us from the ungodly influence of the world, relieving us of fear, giving us victory over death and saving us from the final judgment for our offenses against God (Matthew 1:21).
  2. The Savior is also “Christ the Lord” – the only one worthy to be the leader and supreme authority in our lives. He has been anointed (set apart, commissioned, empowered) as the Messiah (“anointed one,” Savior) and the Lord who rules with love over His people (Matthew 1:1). No person can truly have Jesus as Savior while not submitting to His lordship. That is to say, He must be both the Forgiver of our sins and the Leader of our lives.
