START YOU DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Acts 1:14
These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
The Power of Homothumadon: Waiting in United Prayer
Have you ever found yourself in a season of waiting? Waiting for a breakthrough, a direction, or a promise to be fulfilled? In Acts 1:14, we find the early church in exactly that position. Jesus had ascended, leaving them with instructions to wait in Jerusalem for the promise of the Father—the Holy Spirit.
The Bible records their response: “They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.”
What is Homothumadon?
The phrase “joined together constantly” comes from the profound Greek word homothumadon. Derived from homou (meaning “same”) and thumos (meaning “mind,” “spirit,” or “passion”), it describes a deep, extraordinary unity.
This wasn’t just a group of people occupying the same room. Their minds, affections, and desires were harmonized. They shared a singular focus and a shared purpose as they waited for the Holy Spirit to come in tremendous power.
Our Responsibility in the Spirit’s Power
The miracle of Pentecost didn’t happen in a vacuum. It required human responsibility. Those who desire the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit to do God’s work must earnestly make themselves available to Him.
We see this availability modeled through a complete commitment to God’s will—His desires, purposes, and plans—and through persistent, unwavering prayer.
The Divine Parallel
Scripture reveals powerful parallels between the Holy Spirit coming upon Jesus and the Spirit coming upon His disciples:
- The Catalyst of Prayer: The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus after He prayed at His baptism, just as the Spirit fell upon the disciples after they prayed in the Upper Room (Luke 3:21-22, Acts 2:4).
- The Outward Evidence: Both instances were marked by visible, supernatural signs and evidence of the Spirit’s presence (Luke 3:22, Acts 2:2-4).
- The Launch of Ministry: The public ministries of both Jesus and the early church began fully only after the Holy Spirit came to empower them (Luke 4:14-19, Acts 2:14-47).
If Jesus Himself operated through the power of the Spirit initiated in prayer, how much more do we need that same empowerment today? When we align our hearts in true unity and seek God’s will, we set the stage for His Spirit to move powerfully in our lives.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the promise of Your Holy Spirit. Forgive us for the times we try to operate in our own strength and wisdom. Today, we ask for the spirit of homothumadon in our lives, our families, and our churches. Bind us together in one mind, one heart, and one passion for Your kingdom. Teach us how to wait on You in faithful, constant prayer. We submit our desires to Your perfect will. Empower us afresh with Your Holy Spirit so that we may witness of Your goodness and carry out Your work with supernatural power and bold confidence. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
