Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers.

NOT A MAN … SHALL SEE THE GOOD LAND

All Israelites who were unwilling to enter the promised land (Deuteronomy 1:26) were denied entrance into that land after that time. Disobedience can often be tragic because it may result in a lost opportunity that will never be presented again. It may also result in divine judgment.

(KJV) Deuteronomy 1:26

Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God:

REBELLED AGAINST THE COMMAND / DEUTERONOMY 1:26

The people of Israel should have entered the promised land thirty-nine years before (Deuteronomy 1:2-3). Because of their disobedience and their failure to do the will of God, however, their entrance was delayed (Numbers 14:33-34). Failure to live in God’s will and by His Spirit (Romans 8:12-15: Galatians 5:16) can result in a delay in or total loss of God’s plan for our lives. We should have a holy fear of being out of the Lord’s will and losing His presence, grace and protection in our lives.

The New Testament often refers to the contents of Deuteronomy. Jesus quoted from the book when He was tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:4; Matthew 4:6-7; Matthew 4:10; Deuteronomy 6:13, 16; 8:3) and as He taught about our relationship with God as expressed in “the first and greatest commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38; Matthew 18:16; John 8:17).

NOTHING CAN HEAL YOUR WOUND / NAHUM 3:19

 There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

NOTHING CAN HEAL YOUR WOUND / NAHUM 3:19

Nineveh would be completely destroyed and never again rebuilt. After the city fell in 612 B.C., it became a deserted and desolate area for animals and birds (Zephaniah 2:13-15).

Because the Ninevites believed no one could defeat them, they failed to recall how God had brought down other great cities, such as the city of Thebes in Egypt, conquered by the Assyrians in 66 B.C.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

I AM AGAINST YOU / NAHUM 3:5

Because of Nineveh’s terrible offenses against God, the Lord Himself would personally expose the corruption and deep darkness in the hearts of its residents. God declared that He would destroy them. No power on earth can protect a nation that has made God its enemy and whom God has determined to oppose. When sin reaches a certain level in any society, God will expose the people to shame by bringing down all their means of security and leaving them completely open to the consequences of their rebellion. Such a society will crumble in defeat.

PROSTITUTION … WITCHCRAFT / NAHUM 3:4

(KJV) Nahum 3:4

because of the multitude of the whoredoms
of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts,
that selleth nations through her whoredoms,
and families through her witchcrafts.

PROSTITUTION … WITCHCRAFT / NAHUM 3:4

Sin never exists in isolation. That is to say, one offense against God will most likely lead to another. That is because sin spreads and multiplies like an infectious disease. Not only were the Assyrians brutally cruel, but they were also extremely immoral. 

  1. From the outside, Nineveh appeared attractive. But on the inside, she was full of cult prostitution, ungodly behavior and shameful activity of all kinds. The city was also heavily involved in witchcraft, black magic (rituals done for evil purposes or to call on evil spirits) and spiritism (the belief that the living can communicate with the dead). These wicked practices allowed demons and evil spirits to control the people’s lives. 
  2. The relationship between these two elements is clear: exposing yourself to sin and its traps is the same as opening up your life to the influence and even the control by demonic spirits.

NOT POLLUTE THE LAND / NUMBERS 35:33

(KJV) Numbers 35:33

So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye are: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

NOT POLLUTE THE LAND / NUMBERS 35:33

To fail to put a murderer to death polluted and brought disgrace to the land. To “pollute” means that the failure to avenge the death of the innocent person would cause God to withdraw His presence, blessing and help from the land (Deuteronomy 21:1-9). God’s holiness and justice required that no murderer be allowed to go free. The death of the murderer expressed God’s holy desire for Israel that righteousness and the sanctity of innocent life be maintained among His people as a holy nation (Genesis 9:6).
