REMEMBER MY CHAINS / COLOSSIANS 4:18

During Paul’s first Roman imprisonment, he wrote Colossians, Philemon, Ephesians and Philippians. Amazingly, in spite of being unjustly confined to prison for four or more years, Paul’s letters are filled the “thankfulness” (Colossians 1:3, 12; 2:7; 3:15; 4:2), “grace” (Ephesians 1:2, 6-7; 2:5; 3:2; 4:7; 6:24), “joy” (Philippians 1:4, 18; 2:2; 3:1; 4:1, 4) and “love” (Philemon 1:5, 7, 9).

AFTER THIS LETTER HAS BEEN READ / COLOSSIANS 4:16

And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.

AFTER THIS LETTER HAS BEEN READ / COLOSSIANS 4:16

Paul’s letters were read out loud to the congregation when they assembled for worship. The Colossian Christians, after receiving this letter, would most likely make a copy of it to keep for themselves and then send the letter on to the nearby Laodiceans. The “letter from Laodices” was probable the letter we call Ephesians.

ALWAYS WRESTLING IN PRAYER / COLOSSIANS 4:12

(KJV) Colossians 4:12

Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.

ALWAYS WRESTLING IN PRAYER / COLOSSIANS 4:12

“Wrestling” (Greek agonizo, from which we derive the English word “agonize”) speaks of deep desire and willingness to struggle and do spiritual battle in prayer. Faithful New Testament believers were devoted to prayer (Colossians 4:2), and they called on God with the expectation for Him to meet their needs and challenges in powerful and miraculous ways. The needs of our families, churches, schools, workplaces, communities and the world today are no less urgent, no less serious. We must pray with passion and inner persistence, knowing that as we wrestle in prayer, Christ’s energy is working powerfully in us (Colossians 1:29) and His purposes are being realized on behalf of others.

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

CONVERSATION … FULL OF GRACE … SEASONED WITH SALT / COLOSSIANS 4:6

As Christians, our speech must be pleasant, encouraging, kind and gracious – worthy of being identified with Christ. It should set an example of godliness and decency for all who hear, and it should always speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). This kind of conversation results from the work of God’s grace (His undeserved favor, love and spiritual enablement) in our hearts. “Seasoned with salt” is a conversation that is right for the occasion, wholesome, marked by purity and free from corruption (Colossians 3:8; Ephesians 4:29). Like salt, it should enhance and add flavor in a spiritual sense, giving people a thirst and appetite for God (Matthew 5:13). Graceful speech, however, does not rule out stern words, when necessary, to challenge and oppose the enemies of Christ (Matthew 23: Acts 15:1-2; Galatians 1:9).

And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.

GOD MAY OPEN A DOOR / COLOSSIANS 4:3

Paul was confident that God was directing his life and ministry by opening and shutting doors of opportunity and responsibility at just the right times. The effectiveness of our lives, service and witness for God depends both on His providence (His knowledge of what is ahead and how it should be approached) and on His direct intervention (when God interrupts the natural course of events). While God does not desire for us to sit passively by and wait for a sign before we take action in serving Him, we should pray that God would open doors of opportunity for us and help us recognize those opportunities. We should also pray for the boldness to step through open doors, trusting Him to help us make the most of every opportunity (Colossians 4:5) and accomplish all that he desires (Acts 16:6-10).

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

DEVOTE YOURSELVES TO PRAYER BEING WATCHFUL / COLOSSIANS 4:2

“Devote yourselves” (Greek proskartereo) means “continue steadily” or “persevere,” implying strong determination and passion for prayer. “Being watchful” (Greek gregoreo) means “being spiritually awake or alert.”

  1. In order to devote ourselves to serious prayer, we must be alert to the many things that would distract us from this purpose. Satan, the pleasures and concerns of the world and the weakness of our own human nature are sources that can often distract us as we attempt to pray. We must discipline ourselves to develop the kind of prayer life necessary for spiritual maturity and consistent Christian victory. 
  2. Prayer was at the heart of the life of the New Testament church: “The devoted themselves … to prayer” (Acts 2:42: Acts 2:42-47). This passionate devotion to prayer must be based on love and gratitude to Christ for what He has done for us.

AS WORKING FOR THE LORD / COLOSSIANS 3:23

Paul encourages Christians to consider all of their efforts and labor as a service directly to the Lord. We must work as though Christ were our employer, knowing that all work performed “for the Lord” will someday be rewarded (Colossians 3:24; Ephesians 6:6-8).

 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

WHATEVER YOU DO WHETHER IN WORD OR DEED / COLOSSIANS 3:17

The Bible presents general principles that help Holy Spirit-led believers determine the rightness or wrongness of activities and behaviors not specifically mentioned in God’s Word. In everything that we say, do, think or enjoy, we should be guided by asking ourselves the following questions:

  1. Can it be done for God’s glory and honor (1 Corinthians 10:31; 1 Corinthians 10:23 – 11:1)?
  2. Can it be done “in the name of the Lord Jesus” (with a complete awareness of who He is, all He stands for and that you are to represent Him), and could you ask His blessing and approval on the activity (John 14:13)?
  3. Can it be done while truly giving thanks to God?
  4. Is it a Christlike action? Would Jesus do it (1 John 2:6)? 
  5. Could it cause another Christian to compromise his or her conscience and convictions and, at some point, weaken his or her devotion to Christ (1 Corinthians 8:1)?
  6. Will it strengthen or weaken my desire for spiritual things, God’s Word and prayer (Luke 8:14; Matthew 5:6)?
  7. Could it weaken or hinder my influence for Christ on others who do not know Him or who may look to me as an example of Christlike behavior (Matthew 5:13; Matthew 5:14-16)?

Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN YOU / COLOSSIANS 3:16

“The Word of Christ” (Scripture, God’s written Word) must be continually read, studied and meditated upon. (Meditating on God’s Word involves reading a passage, pondering it over and over, considering what it means and determining specifically how you can apply the truth to your life; Psalms 1:2). In order for Christ’s words to dwell in us, we must also pray and practice its principles until they become part of us. By developing this discipline, your thoughts, words, actions and motivation will be increasingly influenced and controlled by Christ (Psalms 119:11; John 15:7; 1 Corinthians 15:2). Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs should be used to teach God’s Word and to inspire believers to love and obey Christ (Ephesians 5:19).

CHRIST WHO IS YOUR LIFE / COLOSSIANS 3:4

Although a right basis of belief (2 Timothy 1:13-14) and a holy life (Colossians 3:5-17; John 14:15,21) are an essential part of a spiritual life and an ongoing relationship with Christ, it is friendship with and love for Christ as a Person that must always be central (Romans 3:22), Notice that Paul mentions the believer’s personal unity, companionship and interaction with Christ again and again throughout this letter (Colossians 1:27; Colossians 2:6-7, 10; Colossians 2:20; Colossians 3:1, 3-4).
