And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

The Day the Sun Stood Still: Trusting the God of Extraordinary Answers

God can pause the universe to answer your prayers. In Joshua 10:13, we find one of the most breathtaking miracles in human history: “The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day.” Facing a fierce battle against the Amorites, Joshua needed more daylight to secure a complete victory. He didn’t offer a timid request; he boldly asked for the impossible, and God rewrote the laws of nature to respond.

When we look closely at this historic event, we find deep truths about God’s power and His willingness to hear our cries.

The Mechanics Don’t Matter to the Creator

Scripture does not detail the exact physics behind how God prolonged the daylight. Skeptics often argue about the cosmic chaos that would occur if the earth suddenly stopped spinning, but the mechanics are a simple task for the Architect of existence.

Slowing Earth’s Rotation: God could have smoothly slowed down the earth’s spin without disrupting gravity.
Axial Tilting: He could have tilted or turned the earth on its axis, mimicking polar regions where the sun naturally stays above the horizon for months.
Atmospheric Refraction: God could have supernaturally bent and refracted the sun’s rays to project light long after the sun had physically dipped below the horizon.

Ultimately, the exact method doesn’t change the truth. As Isaiah 38:7-8 reminds us, the God who created the earth and the heavenly bodies can easily suspend their natural movements for His own divine purposes.

An Extraordinary Answer to Prayer

The real heart of this passage isn’t the science; it is the intimacy. Joshua 10:14 emphasizes, “There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a human being.”

Joshua was moving in active obedience to God’s command. Because he was doing God’s work, he had the radical faith to ask for a cosmic intervention. Whatever method God chose to use that day, it stands as an eternal monument to the truth that the Creator of the universe fights for His people.

What is Your “Sun Stand Still” Request?

We often limit our prayers to what seems reasonable, safe, or logically possible. But Joshua’s prayer reminds us that we serve a God who is completely unbothered by the boundaries of natural law.

Are you facing an impossible deadline?
Do you need a miracle in your health, marriage, or finances?
Are you fighting a spiritual battle where time and resources seem to be running out?

Stop praying small prayers to a massive God. Bring Him your “sun stand still” requests. Step out in bold obedience, make your petition known, and watch how the Lord of hosts fights on your behalf.

Heavenly Father, Ruler of heaven and earth, You are the Almighty Creator who sets the stars in motion and holds the universe together in the palm of Your hand. Today, we are in awe of Your infinite power.

Forgive us for the times we have shrunk You down to the size of our problems. Lord, we want to possess the radical, unwavering faith of Joshua. Give us the courage to pray bold, audaciously big prayers that line up with Your perfect will. We thank You that You are not limited by our natural laws, our timelines, or our human limitations.

Bold Faith: Praying for the Extraordinary in a Hostile World

We all face moments when the challenges before us look completely insurmountable. The opposition feels too heavy, the clock is ticking, and our human strength is simply not enough. In those moments, we are often tempted to shrink back, pray safe prayers, and settle for survival.

But scripture calls us to a completely different level of boldness.

In Joshua 10:12, we witness one of the most audacious prayers ever recorded: “On the day the Lord gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the Lord in the presence of Israel: ‘Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and you, moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.'”

Joshua did not just pray for a good strategy or a bit of extra energy. He prayed for a cosmic miracle. He asked God to pause the universe so His people could secure the victory.

And God answered him.

The Reality of Our Battle

Jesus’ followers today live in a world that is deeply opposed and often openly hostile to our faith. We face cultural pressures, broken systems, chronic sickness, and spiritual warfare that threaten to derail us.

This environment presents daily difficulties. These challenges sometimes require nothing less than a miracle to overcome. Whether you need a breakthrough in your family, a door opened in your career, or supernatural healing, standard efforts will not always suffice to accomplish God’s plans and purposes in your life.

Stop Praying Safe Prayers

Too often, we hesitate to ask God for the extraordinary. We think our problems are too small for Him to care about, or too big for Him to fix. We treat prayer as a last resort rather than our greatest weapon.

Joshua’s bold request reminds us of who our God is. He is the Creator of the sun and the moon. He is not limited by natural laws, time, or human odds. When we pray timidly, we underestimate His power.

You have access to the exact same God who stopped the sun. Because of Jesus, you can approach His throne with supreme confidence. Do not hesitate to ask Him for the impossible. Bold prayers honor a big God.

Expect the Extraordinary

When you pray for a miracle, you are aligning your heart with God’s ultimate purpose. Joshua did not ask for a longer day just to enjoy the weather; he asked so that God’s covenant purposes would be fulfilled.

When your prayers align with God’s kingdom, you can expect Him to move. It might not always look like a sun standing still, but His supernatural intervention will always provide exactly what you need to overcome the hostility of this world.

Stop settling for ordinary outcomes when you serve an extraordinary God. Step out in faith, open your mouth, and pray for the miracle you need today.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being the God of the impossible. You hold the universe in your hands, yet You lean down to hear my prayers. Lord, I confess that I have often prayed small, safe prayers out of fear or doubt. Today, I choose to step out in the bold faith of Joshua.

Grace in Our Missteps: How God Redeems Our Broken Commitments

God’s faithfulness is greater than our failures, and He actively redeems our wrong turns when we honor Him with integrity.

When we make a major mistake, the enemy loves to whisper that we have permanently derailed God’s plan for our lives. We look at our poor judgment, our impulsive decisions, or the moments we forgot to seek the Lord, and we assume His blessing is gone. However, Scripture reveals a beautiful, comforting truth: even when we miss God’s perfect, ideal will, He frequently uses our failures as a canvas to showcase His overwhelming love, sovereign power, and unshakeable commitment to us.

The Blunder: Walking by Sight, Not by Faith

In Joshua 9, the leaders of Israel faced a turning point. A delegation from Gibeon arrived at their camp wearing tattered clothes and carrying moldy bread, claiming they traveled from a distant land. The Bible notes a critical, cautionary detail:

“The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.” — Joshua 9:14

Relying entirely on human evaluation, Joshua made a binding peace treaty and covenant with them. Three days later, the truth emerged: the Gibeonites were actually local neighbors. Israel had been thoroughly deceived into an alliance that technically violated God’s original instructions for possessing the Promised Land.

The Pivot: Honoring a Messy Commitment

Joshua and the elders faced a massive dilemma. Should they break the oath because it was built on a deceptive lie?

Instead of compounding a mistake with another sin, Israel chose the path of integrity. They declared, “We have given them our oath by the Lord, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now… we will let them live, so that wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them” (Joshua 9:18-20).

They held fast to their word and commitment, refusing to take the easy way out. By choosing honor over convenience, they set the stage for God to unleash a miracle.

The Redemption: “Do Not Be Afraid”

Because Gibeon allied with Israel, a powerful coalition of five surrounding kings launched a massive attack against the city. Bound by their treaty, Joshua and his army marched all night to defend their deceptive new allies.

Joshua could have easily rationalized stepping back, viewing the attack as a convenient way for the enemy to wipe out his mistake. Instead, he marched into battle, and God met him there with profound assurance:

“The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.'” — Joshua 10:8

God did not abandon His people in the mess of their own making. He showed up supernaturally—hurling hailstones from heaven and even making the sun stand still to grant Israel a historic victory.

The Danger of the Unprayed Prayer: Lessons from Joshua 9:14

We make thousands of decisions every day. Some choices are minor, like what to wear or what to eat. Other choices are major, like changing careers, buying a home, or entering a new relationship.

When a decision seems clear-cut, common sense often takes over. We look at the facts, analyze the situation, and move forward with confidence.

However, Joshua 9 serves as a stark warning about the danger of relying solely on our own intellect. It shows us what happens when we move forward in our own strength without seeking the counsel of God.

The Deception of the Gibeonites

In Joshua 9, the Israelites were successfully conquering the Promised Land. The surrounding nations were terrified. Knowing they could not defeat Israel in battle, the people of Gibeon resorted to trickery.

They sent a delegation to Joshua wearing worn-out clothes, carrying patched wineskins, and holding dry, moldy bread. They claimed to be from a distant country, seeking a peace treaty.

The evidence looked overwhelming. The bread was dry. The clothes were old. Every physical sign pointed to the truth of their story.

The Fatal Flaw

Joshua and the leaders of Israel looked at the evidence and made a decision. Joshua 9:14 reveals their critical mistake:

“The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.”

The leaders relied entirely on their physical senses and human logic. They failed to pray. They failed to ask God for His perspective.

Because the situation seemed so obvious, they assumed they did not need to trouble God with it. They presumptuously made a covenant agreement with the Gibeonites—a treaty they could not break once the truth was revealed just three days later.

The Consequences of Presumption

By failing to inquire of the Lord, Israel brought the ungodly Canaanites directly into their communities. This was an action explicitly forbidden by God in Deuteronomy 7, designed to protect Israel from spiritual corruption.

The consequences of this unprayed prayer lasted for generations. A lack of prayer turned a temporary situation into a permanent problem.

How often do we do the same thing? We face a situation that looks good on the surface. An investment seems safe, a person seems trustworthy, or an opportunity seems perfect. We jump in with both feet, only to realize later that we walked straight into a trap.

Look to God First

God desires to be involved in every detail of our lives, not just the crises. Seeking His wisdom is not a sign of weakness; it is the ultimate expression of spiritual maturity.

When we pause to inquire of the Lord, we allow Him to reveal the hidden traps that human logic cannot see. Walking in His guidance helps us avoid unnecessary sorrows, regrets, and tragedies.

Before you sign the contract, make the purchase, or give your word, pause and pray. Never let a situation look so clear that you forget to ask God for His direction.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Forgive me for the times I have rushed ahead of You. Forgive me for relying on my own understanding, my own vision, and my own logic instead of seeking Your face. I confess that I often make assumptions based on what my eyes can see, forgetting that You see the heart and the future.

Teach me to pause. Help me to cultivate a heart that inquires of You before making decisions, both large and small. Grant me the wisdom to recognize deception and the patience to wait for Your clear direction. Guard my steps from unnecessary sorrow, and let my life be guided by Your perfect truth.

Foundations of the Promised Land: 4 Divine Principles from Joshua 8

In Joshua 8:30, right after the hard-fought victory at Ai, Joshua pauses the military campaign for a singular purpose: he builds an altar to the Lord. This moment on Mount Ebal was not just a brief pause for ceremony; it was a profound spiritual reset. This vital occasion of building an altar and reading the law (Joshua 8:34) reveals four foundational principles for understanding the entire book of Joshua—and our own walk with God today.

1. Possessing the Promise Demands Loyalty

The right to possess the Promised Land was never a blanket guarantee; it depended entirely on loyalty to God’s covenant, or His “life agreement,” with Israel. As outlined in Deuteronomy 30:15-18, the land was a gift, but remaining in it required active obedience. For us, entering into the abundant life God promises requires a daily commitment to walk in alignment with His terms, choosing life and blessing through devotion to Him.

2. Access to God Requires Faith and Sacrifice

Israel’s access to God was “opened” by faith and maintained through atoning, “sin-covering” blood sacrifices on that very altar (Joshua 8:30-31). This points us directly to the heart of the Gospel. Our connection to God is initiated by faith and preserved through the ultimate, once-and-for-all atoning blood of Jesus Christ. We cannot sustain a relationship with a holy God on our own merits.

3. Continued Blessing Hangs on Love and Devotion

God’s continued blessing was strictly dependent on Israel’s love and loyalty to Him (Deuteronomy 28-29; 30:11-20). We saw in Joshua 7:1-26 how quickly disobedience brought defeat. Life, prosperity, peace, and a vibrant relationship with God in their new homeland were conditional. Active faith in God’s promises—vividly represented by the physical altar, the sacrifices, and the commandments—was essential to maintaining their covenant connection (Deuteronomy 29:18-21).

4. God’s Word is the Ultimate Authority

God’s written Word stood as the ultimate, highest, and final authority for His people. It served as the precise basis on which they would experience either His blessing or His curse (Joshua 8:31-32, 34; 1:8). Centuries later, Jesus echoed this immutable truth in Matthew 7:24-27, warning that the strength of our life’s foundation depends entirely on whether we hear and act upon His words. To bypass Scripture is to build on sinking sand.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the powerful reminder of the altar built on Mount Ebal. We recognize today that Your promises are true, but You call us to a life of deep loyalty, love, and obedience. Thank You for Jesus Christ, whose atoning blood has opened our access to You once and for all.

Grace, Judgment, and the Unknown: Reflecting on Joshua 7:25

The Old Testament contains narratives that challenge our modern sensibilities and force us to wrestle with the weight of justice. One of the most sobering accounts is found in Joshua 7, culminating in the tragic execution of Achan and his family.

Joshua 7:25 states, “And Joshua said, ‘Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day.’ So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones.”

This passage leaves us with profound questions about earthly consequences, divine justice, and the ultimate destiny of those involved.

Physical Consequences vs. Eternal Destiny

When we read of such drastic earthly judgments, it is easy to conflate physical consequences with eternal condemnation. However, Scripture requires us to make a distinction between the two.

Physical death as a consequence: The Old Testament consistently emphasizes that physical death is a general result of sin. It demonstrates that temporal death is a just and reasonable punishment for specific, covenant-breaking actions.
The silence on eternity: While the earthly penalty for Achan’s rebellion was absolute, the text remains silent on the final spiritual state of Achan and his family. We do not know for sure the eternal destiny of those who perished in the Valley of Achor.
A blurred relationship: It is not always clear in biblical narratives how immediate earthly punishment relates to a person’s final and eternal judgment.

Leaving Judgment in the Hands of the Father

Scripture reveals that God’s earthly judgments serve as corporate warnings for the living, rather than final declarations on an individual’s eternity. Physical death acts as a boundary line for human history, but eternal judgment belongs solely to the omniscience of God.

We can take comfort in knowing that the Judge of all the earth will always do what is right. Where the text leaves a mystery, we are called to trust His perfect character, balancing absolute justice with unsearchable mercy.

Holy and Righteous Father,

We humble ourselves before the depth of Your judgments and the mystery of Your ways. Your Word reminds us of the gravity of sin and the tangible wreckage it brings into our lives and communities.

Lord, when we look at difficult passages like the story of Achan, preserve us from presumptuous judgment. We recognize that while earthly consequences are visible, a person’s eternal destiny remains known only to You. We rest in the certainty that You look at the heart with perfect justice and boundless mercy.

Teach us to walk in holy fear, to value the grace we have received, and to trust Your ultimate courtroom. Keep our hearts soft, our steps obedient, and our faith anchored in Christ, who bore the ultimate weight of our judgment.

And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

The Cost of Silent Consent: Lessons on Family Responsibility from Joshua 7

We often look at the story of Achan in Joshua 7 and shudder. After the glorious victory at Jericho, Israel suffers a shocking defeat at the small city of Ai. The reason? One man, Achan, secretly stole forbidden plunder—a beautiful Babylonian garment, silver, and gold—and hid them beneath his tent.

But the most challenging part of the story comes at the end. Joshua 7:24 tells us that Joshua and all Israel took Achan, the silver, the garment, the gold wedge, and his sons and daughters, bringing them to the Valley of Achor. There, the entire family was stoned and burned.

This tragic ending raises a difficult question: Why did God punish Achan’s family alongside him?

The Tension: Individual vs. Corporate Responsibility

At first glance, this narrative seems to contradict God’s own law. Deuteronomy 24:16 explicitly forbids punishing children for their father’s sins: “Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”

So, how do we reconcile this?

The answer lies beneath the floorboards of Achan’s tent. Achan dug a hole inside his family’s living quarters to hide a massive amount of contraband. In a tight-knit, ancient nomadic tent structure, it is highly improbable that his family knew nothing about it. They walked over the stolen goods every day. They had knowledge of his sin, and they chose to ignore the fact that it was wrong.

Failing the Duty of Accountability

Family members share a unique bond, but they also share a holy responsibility. Scripture shows us that the members of a household have an equal duty to encourage, protect, and warn one another. We are called to help keep our loved ones committed to God and His standards.

Achan’s family failed in this responsibility.

Instead of confronting Achan, warning him of the danger, or urging him to confess, they met his sin with silent consent. By remaining silent, they became accomplices to the rebellion that brought a curse upon the entire nation of Israel. Because they chose to share in the concealment of the sin, they ultimately suffered the consequences alongside him.

The Power of Holy Courage in the Home

This sobering story is not a blueprint for legal punishment today, but it is a powerful warning about the dangers of passive enabling. True love does not stay silent when a family member enters a path of destructive sin.

We live in a culture that screams, “Mind your own business.” But in the Kingdom of God, love demands accountability. If we see a spouse, a sibling, or a child drifting into compromise, stealing, lying, or harboring secret idols, love compels us to speak up.

It takes immense courage to warn someone we love. It is uncomfortable. It can cause temporary friction. However, as Achan’s family reminds us, the cost of holy confrontation is always lower than the price of silent compromise. Let us be protectors of our homes by refusing to let sin hide under our tents.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You with sober hearts, recognizing the weight of Your holiness and the reality of sin. Lord, forgive us for the times we have chosen comfort over courage, and silence over truth. We ask that You cleanse our homes and our hearts from any hidden idols or compromises.

Give us the wisdom and the boldness to look after one another well. Help us to build households where truth is spoken in love, where accountability is welcomed, and where Your standards are honored. Remove all fear of confrontation and replace it with a fierce desire to see our families walk in righteousness. May our homes be places of light, transparency, and uncompromised commitment to You.

Facing the Hidden Defeat: Why We Lose Our Spiritual Battles

We have all been there. You face a spiritual battle—a temptation, an old habit, a trial—and you expect to win. You pray, you step out in faith, and suddenly, you are completely overwhelmed.

In Joshua 7, the Israelites experienced this firsthand. Fresh off their miraculous victory at Jericho, they marched against a tiny city called Ai. They expected an easy win. Instead, they were soundly defeated and fled for their lives.

A heartbroken Joshua fell to his face before God, asking why this happened. God’s response in Joshua 7:12 is a sobering wake-up call for us today:

“That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run, because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.”

The High Cost of Hidden Sin

The defeat at Ai wasn’t caused by a lack of military strategy. It was caused by hidden sin. A man named Achan had secretly stolen forbidden plunder from Jericho and buried it under his tent.

This ancient truth applies directly to our modern lives. The principle is clear: we cannot stand against our spiritual enemies when we harbor hidden sin.

This truth impacts us on two distinct levels:

The Community: Disobedience ripples outward, affecting our families, ministries, and churches.
The Individual: Stubbornly refusing to turn from sin cuts you off from God’s active grace, help, and protection.

Losing Your Spiritual Defense

When we hold onto sin, we voluntarily step out from under the umbrella of God’s protection. We become highly vulnerable.

Without God’s strength, you cannot resist the spiritual enemies of your soul. Temptations feel stronger. Doubts grow louder. Anxiety settles in.

Joshua 7:13 warns us that unless sin is removed, spiritual slavery and eventual death are the certain results. Sin promises freedom but always delivers a cage.

The Way Forward: Consecration

The good news is that defeat does not have to be the final chapter. God told Joshua exactly how to fix the problem: “Consecrate the people.”

To consecrate means to set yourself apart for God. It requires us to stop tolerating the “small” sins buried beneath the surface of our lives.

If you feel defeated today, look beneath the surface. Confess what is hidden, bring it into the light, and receive God’s forgiveness. True victory begins with total surrender.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Search my heart today. Bring to light any hidden sin, compromise, or disobedience that I have buried beneath the surface of my life. I confess that I cannot win my battles in my own strength, and I deeply need Your grace and protection.

Forgive me for the times I have turned away from Your commands. Wash me clean and restore the joy of my salvation. Help me to remove anything that separates me from You, so that I can stand firm against the enemies of my soul.

I surrender my life fresh to You today. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and grant me the strength to walk in obedience and victory.

The Cost of Compromise: What Joshua 7 Teaches Us About Hidden Sin

The story of Achan in Joshua 7 is one of the most sobering accounts in Scripture. After the monumental victory at Jericho, Israel faced a small, seemingly insignificant enemy at Ai. Yet, Israel was utterly defeated.

The reason? One man’s hidden disobedience.

Achan’s sin, the severe consequences it brought on his family, and the impact on the whole nation of Israel reveal several critical truths about how God judges shameless sin among His people.

1. Sin Compromises God’s Blessing

When God’s people commit or accept sin, they compromise God’s blessing on their lives—or risk losing it altogether. God will not bless people, individually or as a group, if they fail to remove sin from their presence (Joshua 7:1, 11-13, 20-21, 25).

This principle carries directly into the New Testament. In 1 Corinthians 5:1-13, Paul warns the church that “a little leaven leavens the whole lump.” We cannot expect the fullness of God’s favor while willfully harboring what He has forbidden.

2. Hidden Sin Exposés the Entire Community

Open or unaddressed sin within a congregation of God’s people exposes everyone in that congregation to the destructive influence of the enemy. Because of Achan’s secret theft, thirty-six innocent Israelite soldiers lost their lives, and the hearts of the people melted with fear (Joshua 7:4-13).

Sin is never private. It creates spiritual vulnerability, leaving the community exposed to Satan and the evil in the world. If such defiance toward God is not corrected, it will inevitably bring judgment.

3. Repentance Restores Presence and Blessing

The narrative of Joshua 7 is severe, but it contains a vital roadmap for restoration. If sin is exposed, confessed, and removed, then God’s blessing and presence can return.

Once Israel dealt faithfully with Achan’s sin, God told Joshua, “Do not be afraid… I have given into your hand the king of Ai” (Joshua 8:1). We see this same immediate standard of holiness and subsequent power in the early church with Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 4:31–5:11). Purity precedes power.

The Call to Total Obedience

Sin among God’s people must be taken very seriously. Groups of believers and individual followers of Christ must guard their moral purity with extreme vigilance.

Practicing total obedience to God is not legalism; it is our service and our highest show of love to Him. When we tolerate “small” compromises, the congregation’s spiritual life will not fully develop, and its growth may be stopped altogether. As Jesus warned the compromised churches in Revelation, we must wake up, repent, and strengthen what remains before it dies (Revelation 3:1-3, 14-18).

Let us examine our hearts today. Let us drag any hidden “accursed things” into the light of God’s grace, so that His presence can move freely among us.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

You are holy, righteous, and pure. Your eyes see every hidden corner of our hearts, and nothing is concealed from Your sight. Lord, we confess that we have sometimes minimized the weight of our sins, forgetting that our choices affect the body of Christ around us.

Search us, O God, and know our hearts today. Try us and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any grievous way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Give us the courage to expose, confess, and remove any compromise or hidden idols in our lives.

We desire Your presence above all else. Do not let our disobedience hinder Your blessing or halt the spiritual growth of our families and churches. Purify us by Your Word and Spirit. May our total obedience be a genuine expression of our love and service to You.

Finding Mercy in the Rubble: Understanding the Hardest Parts of Joshua 6

The Fall of Jericho is one of the most famous stories in the entire Bible. We sing songs about the walls coming down, celebrating the miraculous victory God gave to the Israelites. But if we keep reading past the collapse of the walls, we encounter a verse that stops many readers in their tracks.

Joshua 6:21 states: “They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.”

It is a heavy, jarring sentence. How do we reconcile a God of love with a command of total destruction? If we want a mature, honest faith, we cannot skip over these difficult passages.

The Context of Judgment

To understand Joshua 6:21, we have to look at the broader biblical narrative. The destruction of Jericho was not a reckless act of military anger, nor was it ethnic cleansing. It was a specific, long-delayed act of divine judgment.

Centuries earlier, God told Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan, but only after the sins of the people living there had “reached their full measure” (Genesis 15:16). For hundreds of years, the Canaanites practiced extreme forms of wickedness, including systemic injustice, cruelty, and child sacrifice. God waited patiently, giving generations time to change, but the culture refused to turn away from its destructive path. Jericho was the ultimate representation of that defiance.

Devoted to the Lord

The text says the Israelites “devoted the city to the Lord.” The Hebrew word used here is cherem, which means to set something apart completely for God. Because Jericho was the first city taken in the Promised Land, it belonged entirely to Him as a “firstfruits” offering.

The Israelites were strictly forbidden from taking any spoils, riches, or prisoners for personal gain. This rule ensured that the battle was recognized as God’s holy judgment, not a war driven by human greed or a desire to build an empire.

Mercy Amidst Justice

Even in this dark chapter, God’s desire to save people shines through. Just a few verses later, we read that Rahab—a Canaanite woman living inside Jericho—and her entire family were spared.

Rahab recognized the power of the living God and chose to align herself with Him. God immediately paused the judgment of the city to rescue her. Rahab did not just survive; she was welcomed into the community of Israel and eventually became an ancestor of Jesus Christ.

This truth reminds us that God’s judgment is never arbitrary. Anyone, regardless of their past or their background, can find immediate safety and grace when they turn toward Him.

What This Means for Us Today

We no longer live under the specific historical mandates given to ancient Israel. Jesus explicitly changed how we fight battles, telling us to love our enemies and pray for those who mistreat us. Our battle today is not against other people, but against the spiritual forces of evil, sin, and brokenness in our world.

Joshua 6:21 serves as a stark reminder of two timeless truths:

Sin carries real consequences. God takes holiness seriously, and He will not allow evil to ruin His creation forever.
We can trust God’s character. Even when we do not fully understand the mechanics of ancient history, we can trust the God who went to the cross to take the ultimate judgment upon Himself so that we could receive unconditional grace.

A Closing Prayer

Holy God,

We come to You today acknowledging that Your ways are higher than our ways, and Your thoughts are deeper than our thoughts. Sometimes Your Word challenges us, forces us to grapple with difficult truths, and reminds us of the reality of Your justice.

We thank You that You are a God who takes sin seriously, because You care deeply about the world You created. But we thank You even more that Your mercy always triumphs over judgment. Thank You for being like the scarlet cord in Rahab’s window—a reliable refuge for anyone who calls on Your name.

Help us to fight against the sin and compromise in our own hearts with the same urgency we see in the book of Joshua. Fill us with compassion for the people around us, and give us the courage to share Your love and truth with a world that desperately needs it.
