A PORTION AMONG THE GREAT – POURED OUT HIS LIFE UNTO DEATH – MADE INTERCESSION FOR THE TRANSGRESSORS / ISAIAH 53:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:12
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

A PORTION AMONG THE GREAT – POURED OUT HIS LIFE UNTO DEATH – MADE INTERCESSION FOR THE TRANSGRESSORS / ISAIAH 53:12

A PORTION AMONG THE GREAT

God promised to reward Christ for His sacrificial death, and Christ in turn promises to share His reward with all those who are “strong” in faith. This refers to those who trust and follow Him in doing spiritual battle against sin and Satan through the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

POURED OUT HIS LIFE UNTO DEATH

Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, God has reserved and released a great inheritance for His followers. God’s servants have the privilege and responsibility to share the message of the “good news” about forgiveness and new life through Christ Jesus to all people. But any preaching of the gospel that does not focus primarily on how Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross frees us from the power of sin is doomed to failure. A message that does not emphasize the importance of the cross will be ineffective and will not have the power to transform lives, because it lacks the blessing and presence of Christ and His Son.

THE TRANSGRESSORS

To intercede means to plead someone else’s case or to pray for others’ situations and needs. In His agony on the cross, Jesus interceded for sinners (Luke 23:34). His ministry of intercession still continues in heaven (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25) where He serves as our advocate, supporter and defender.

SUFFERING OF HIS SOUL / ISAIAH 53:11

He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

SUFFERING OF HIS SOUL / ISAIAH 53:11

Christ’s suffering would accomplish God’s purpose and provide spiritual salvation – a personal relationship with God and the opportunity to live forever with Him – for the “many” who believe (who accept Christ and entrust their lives to Him).

THE LORD’S WILL TO CRUSH HIM / ISAIAH 53:10

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:10
Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

THE LORD’S WILL TO CRUSH HIM / ISAIAH 53:10

It was part of God the Father’s perfect plan to send His Son to die on the cross for a spiritually lost rebellious world (John 3:16). Since part of God’s character is perfect justice, the price for humanity’s rebellion against God had to be paid; but the payment had to be perfect and complete. Only Jesus Christ’s life could have fulfilled that requirement. By making Christ an atoning (“sin covering”) sacrifice for all sin (Leviticus 5:15; 6:5; 19:21). God accomplished His purpose of providing forgiveness for people and bringing those who accept Him back onto a relationship with Himself. That is the meaning of the phrase “he will see his offspring” – His spiritual descendants. He will “prolong His days” means that Christ would rise from the dead and live to reign forever.

A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED / ISAIAH 53:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:9

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED / ISAIAH 53:9

This phrase gives us the hint that Jesus Christ would die alongside the wicked (the two thieves executed beside Him), or that the Roman soldiers planned to bury Him with those criminals. Yet, as prophesied here (“and with the rich in His death”), He was buried in a rich man’s tomb (Matthew 27:57-60). Then again, the verse may simply be pointing out that although Jesus was sinless and did not deserve to die, He took our place and suffered death just like all other humans who die as a consequence of sin.

LIKE A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER / ISAIAH 53:7

(KJV) Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

LIKE A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER / ISAIAH 53:7

Jesus endured His suffering for us patiently and voluntarily (1 Peter 1:29,36; Revelation 5:6). He loves us completely and unconditionally and He considered His suffering and sacrifice completely worth the cost because it opened the way for us to have a personal relationship with Him (Hebrews 12:2).

WE ALL, LIKE SHEEP, HAVE GONE ASTRAY ISAIAH 53:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:6

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

WE ALL, LIKE SHEEP, HAVE GONE ASTRAY ISAIAH 53:6

Part of humankind’s stubborn and rebellious nature includes the pull toward things that dishonor God. Individuals prefer to follow their own selfish ways rather than obey God’s commands and instructions (Romans 6:1). Living to please ourselves rather than living to please God is direct rebellion against Him. This is one of the primary definitions of sin. We are all guilty. Therefore, we all needed Christ to die in our place. He is the only one who ever followed God’s purposes completely, resisting all selfish desires (Philippians 2:3-5). For that reason, His is the only life worthy to pay the full penalty for sin. In order to receive the benefits of His sacrifice, we must admit our sin, accept Christ’s forgiveness, give up our own way and submit our lives to Christ’s leadership and to God’s purposes.

PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS – BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED / ISAIAH 53:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS – BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED / ISAIAH 53:5

PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS

To “transgress” means to cross a line or step outside of a boundary, as in violating a law or committing a crime. All humanity has violated God’s perfect law, and our crime is actually against Him. Our defiance and opposition to most severe penalty: death (Romans 6:23) and eternal separation from God. Christ was crucified (executed by being nailed to an upright cross until He died) because God allowed Him to take our place, as our substitute, and suffer the death penalty that our sin deserved (Psalms 22:16; Zechariah 12:10; John 19:34). By admitting our sin and accepting Christ’s sacrifice as our own, we can receive forgiveness and have peace with God (Romans 5:1).

BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED

This healing refers to a complete salvation – a gift from God that brings us into a relationship with Him – with all its benefits, spiritual and physical. Sickness and disease are the result of sin entering the world through humankind’s rebellion against God and of Satan’s activity in the world. John, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, wrote that “the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8). Christ gave gifts of healing to His church (1 Corinthians 12:9) and commanded His followers to heal the sick as part of their endeavor to promote God’s kingdom purposes and spread His message of complete salvation around the world (Luke 9:1-2, 6; 10:1, 8-9, 19).

(KJV) Isaiah 53:4

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

TOOK UP OUR INFIRMITIES / ISAIAH 53:4

An infirmity usually refers to a physical weakness or illness. This verse is quoted in Matthew 8:17 with reference to Jesus’ ministry of healing – both physically and spiritually. Jesus took our place and our punishment when He suffered and died to pay the full penalty for the sins of humankind. His suffering and sacrifice were so perfect and complete that they provide for deliverance and relief from our sicknesses and diseases as well as from our sins. For this reason, His followers should pray for physical healing.

DESPISED AND REJECTED – A MAN OF SORROWS / ISAIAH 53:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:3

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

DESPISED AND REJECTED – A MAN OF SORROWS / ISAIAH 53:3

DESPISED AND REJECTED

Instead of being accepted by His own people, Israel, Jesus Christ would be hated and rejected, especially by Israel’s leaders (Isaiah 52:14; Matthew 26:57). In fact, Jesus and His purposes often have been hated and rejected throughout history; and His message and followers will face even more intense persecution before Christ returns.

A MAN OF SORROWS

Jesus’ mission would involve great pain, suffering, disappointment and grief because of the sins (rebellion against God and His ways) and unbelief of humankind. All who follow Jesus will also experience a degree of suffering and rejection (Matthew 10:22; John 15:18; 2 Corinthians 11:23).

ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND – NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US / ISAIAH 53:2

(KJV) Isaiah 53:2

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND – NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US / ISAIAH 53:2

ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND

Jesus not only had humble beginnings, but He came to earth at a time of great spiritual dryness. This is part of the reason John the Baptist began his God-given mission to awaken people – calling them to spiritual awareness – shortly before Jesus began His public ministry.

NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US

People would not be drawn to Jesus Christ because of His physical appearance or His position in life. These things would not bring genuine devotion to the Lord. God’s greatest concern is always for a person’s character and obedience – how much he or she is willing to pursue God’s ways – not one’s earthly status or physical beauty (1 Samuel 16:7; Luke 22:24-30).
