(KJV) Isaiah 1:1
The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
THE VISION – ISAIAH – CONCERNING JUDAH / ISAIAH 1:1
THE VISION
The visions that Isaiah had were not something of his own making or expressions of his personal desires. He received visions from God and spoke and wrote about what he saw through the inspiration (direct revelation, empowerment, guidance to communicate God’s exact message and intentions) of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21). Through Isaiah, God communicated an unmistakable message – a preview of coming events in His plan of salvation (to restore people to a right relationship with Himself).
ISAIAH
The name Isaiah means “the LORD saves.” As a prophet commissioned (to be charged with a duty and the authority necessary to fulfill that duty) by God, Isaiah began his ministry about 740 B.C., the year King Uzziah died (Isaiah 6:1). He prophesied 40 or more years and probably died about 680 B.C.
CONCERNING JUDAH
Isaiah’s prophetic ministry took place during the time of the divided kingdom (1 Kings 12:20; 2 Chronicles 10:1). The northern kingdom – called either “Israel,” “Samaria” or “Ephraim,” with its capital at Samaria – included ten Israelite tribes. The southern kingdom – usually called “Judah,” with its capital at Jerusalem – included the remaining tribes of Judah and Benjamin. Both kingdoms had defied God and His law by relying on foreign nations and false gods to keep them safe from their enemies. The northern kingdom was conquered and destroyed by Assyria in 722 B.C. (2 Kings 17:16). Isaiah warned Judah that they too would be destroyed because of their sin and rebellion against God (Isaiah 39:6).
