AS THE LORD HAS MADE CLEAR TO ME / 2 PETER 1:13-14

(KJV) 2 Peter 1:13-14

Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; ¹⁴ Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

We often live as if we have all the time in the world. We delay important conversations. We put off deep spiritual commitments. We assume tomorrow will always offer another chance to fulfill our purpose.

In 2 Peter 1:13-14, the Apostle Peter shatters this illusion of permanent time. He writes with a piercing sense of urgency that demands our attention:

“I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.”

Peter’s urgency was not based on a vague feeling of aging. It was rooted in a specific prophecy. Decades earlier, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, the resurrected Jesus told Peter exactly how his life would end.

In John 21:18-19, Jesus said, “When you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” John explicitly notes that Jesus said this to show the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.

By the time Peter writes this second letter, he is an old man. He looks at his aging hands and realizes the time spoken of by Christ has arrived. His execution is near.

Many people would panic, flee, or fall into despair if they knew their death was imminent. Peter does the exact opposite. He uses his remaining breath to “stir up” the church.

The Greek word Peter uses for “stir up” means to wake someone from a deep sleep. Peter looked at the believers around him and saw spiritual lethargy. He knew that false teachers were creeping into the church, bringing compromise and complacency.

Because Peter knew his time was short, he focused entirely on what mattered most: reminding God’s people of the truth. He did not offer new, flashy revelations. Instead, he repeated the foundational truths of the gospel so they would stick to the believers’ hearts long after he was gone.

Peter’s words challenge us to examine our own lives. Most of us do not know the exact timing or manner of our departure from this world. However, the reality remains the same: our time in this “tent” of a body is temporary.

Knowing our time is limited should not paralyze us with fear. Instead, it should mobilize us with purpose. It frees us from wasting our lives on trivial arguments, worldly anxieties, and temporary comforts.

When you live with the end in mind, your priorities shift:

• You forgive more quickly.
• You share the gospel more boldly.
• You invest in people rather than possessions.

Peter faced his upcoming martyrdom with absolute calm because he knew that “putting off” his earthly body meant putting on eternal glory. He trusted the words of Jesus on the beach, and he trusted Jesus for his final hours. Let us live with that same intentionality today, waking ourselves from spiritual sleep and pouring our lives into what lasts forever.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the powerful testimony of Your servant Peter, who faced the end of his earthly life with courage, focus, and unwavering faith. Forgive us for the ways we drift into spiritual sleep, wasting the precious time You have given us on things that do not last.

Lord, wake us up. Stir our hearts by Your Holy Spirit so that we may live with a healthy sense of urgency. Help us to value truth, to guard our faith, and to love others intentionally. We thank You that our lives are securely in Your hands, from our very first breath to our last.

Give us the grace to glorify You in everything we do, trusting that when our earthly tents are put away, we have an eternal home waiting for us in Your presence. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
