ADD TO YOUR FAITH / 2 PETER 1:5-7

(KJV) 2 Peter 1:5-7

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;⁶ And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; ⁷ And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

True Christian maturity requires our active, daily cooperation with God’s grace to build godly character traits. While our salvation is a free gift, our spiritual growth demands that we “make every effort” to develop our faith.

In 2 Peter 1:5-7, the Apostle Peter counters false teachers who claimed that spiritual knowledge exempted them from moral living. Instead, Peter provides a building-block list of seven character traits that every believer must diligently cultivate to live a victorious, effective, and productive life.

Godly characteristics do not automatically grow without our deliberate focus. Peter explicitly instructs us to supplement our foundational faith with these essential virtues:

• Virtue (Moral Excellence): Choosing to stand for the truth and living a life of integrity.
• Knowledge: Seeking a deeper, practical understanding of God’s will and His Word.
• Self-Control: Mastering our passions and desires rather than being mastered by them.
• Perseverance: Staying patient and remaining steadfast under trials and mockery.
• Godliness: Living with a deep reverence for God in every ordinary moment of life.
• Brotherly Kindness: Showing genuine affection, warmth, and support to our spiritual family.
• Love (Agape): The ultimate crown of selfless, sacrificial love for God and all mankind.

The phrase “make every effort” reminds us that personal Christian growth is a partnership. As Paul echoes in Philippians 2:12-13, we work out our salvation with fear and trembling, because God is the one actively working in us to will and to act. We must reject the lazy assumption that spiritual maturity just happens over time. It requires our intentional obedience, reliance on the Holy Spirit, and daily discipline.

When we actively add these traits to our lives, we ensure that our faith is never useless or barren. We become the effective, fruit-bearing disciples God called us to be.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for granting us everything we need for life and godliness through Jesus Christ. We confess that we sometimes wait for maturity to happen automatically, forgetting Your call to be diligent. Holy Spirit, help us to make every effort today to add moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to our faith.

Guard our minds against complacency and the false teachings of this world. Strengthen our resolve to partner with Your grace, so that our lives may be productive, effective, and honoring to Your holy name.
