(KJV) Joshua 13:6

All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

Occupying Your Promised Land

We often treat God’s promises like passive inheritance checks waiting to be cashed. In Joshua 13:6, God speaks a powerful word of assurance regarding the remaining Canaanite territories: “I myself will drive them out before the Israelites.” It sounds like an absolute guarantee. Yet, as the rest of scripture reveals, this divine pledge required human partnership.

God promised the victory, but Israel still had to show up to the battlefield.

The Cost of Partial Obedience

Israel’s subsequent history shows they chose comfort over complete obedience. Instead of fully clearing the land, they tolerated pockets of Canaanite resistance. They settled for coexistence.

This compromise quickly turned into a curse. The remaining inhabitants became a snare, pulling God’s people into idolatry, compromise, and the worship of “God-substitutes.” When we leave room for old habits, toxic mindsets, or secret sins in our lives, they eventually grow to dominate us.

Active Faith

God is entirely capable of delivering you, but He rarely does it while you sit on the sidelines. True faith requires action:

Identify the Canaanites: Pinpoint the compromises or “God-substitutes” taking up space in your heart.
Step onto the Field: Face your struggles directly, knowing God fights alongside you.
Enforce the Victory: Do not settle for partial freedom when God has promised complete wholeness.

Trust His promise, grab your shield, and reclaim your territory today.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the profound promises of victory and inheritance You have spoken over my life. Forgive me for the times I have settled for partial obedience and allowed “God-substitutes” to remain in my heart. Grant me the courage to confront the areas of compromise I have tolerated for too long. I step out in faith today, fully trusting Your word that You will drive out the strongholds before me. Empower me by Your Holy Spirit to occupy the full life You have designed for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
