START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Acts 5:3
But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
The Cost of Compromise: Understanding Acts 5:3 and the Danger of Deceit
We live in a culture obsessed with image. From curated social media feeds to carefully crafted professional personas, it is easier than ever to present a version of ourselves that looks flawless on the outside.
But what happens when that desire for human applause creeps into our walk with God?
The story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 serves as a jarring, sobering reminder that while humans look at the outward appearance, God looks directly at the heart.
The Illusion of Devotion
In the early church, a beautiful wave of generosity was taking place. Believers were selling their lands and houses, bringing the proceeds to the apostles, and distributing them to anyone in need. Barnabas had just sold a field and given every single penny to the church, earning deep respect from the community.
Ananias and Sapphira saw the honor Barnabas received, and they wanted it for themselves.
They decided to sell a piece of property, but secretively kept back a portion of the money for themselves. There was nothing inherently wrong with keeping some of the money—it was their property to use as they pleased. The sin was not in the amount they kept; the sin was in the illusion they created.
They brought a fraction of the price to the apostles, pretending it was the full amount. They wanted the reputation of being radical, sacrificial givers without paying the actual price.
A Serious Offense Against the Spirit
When Ananias walked in with the money, the Apostle Peter didn’t praise his generosity. Instead, guided by the Holy Spirit, Peter asked a piercing question:
“Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?” — Acts 5:3
Peter explicitly highlights two vital truths in this passage:
- Lying to the Holy Spirit is lying to God. In Acts 5:3-4, Peter uses “lied to the Holy Spirit” and “lied to God” interchangeably. This is a profound defense of the deity of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is not a vague force; He is a person of the Trinity who hears, grieves, and knows our innermost thoughts.
- The root of deceit is pride. Ananias and Sapphira were driven by a selfish desire for recognition. They cared more about what the church thought of them than what God knew about them.
The consequences were immediate and terrifying. Both Ananias, and later his wife Sapphira, fell dead at the feet of the apostles. Great fear gripped the entire church—and for good reason. God used this moment as a divine boundary line at the very beginning of the church age, establishing His absolute intolerance for hypocrisy, selfish pride, and deceit among those who claim to be Spirit-filled followers of Christ.
The Call to Radical Authenticity
The deaths of Ananias and Sapphira are not just historical footnotes; they are active warnings for us today.
God does not demand perfection from us, but He does demand authenticity. He would rather we bring our small, honest offerings with a sincere heart than a massive, fake sacrifice designed to make ourselves look good.
When we pretend to be more spiritually mature, more generous, or more put-together than we actually are, we fall into the same trap. We trade the genuine approval of a holy God for the fleeting praise of people.
Let us inspect our hearts today. Are we living in the light of absolute honesty before God, or are we keeping back “part of the price” while pretending to give Him our all?
A Closing Prayer for Sincerity and Truth
Heavenly Father, You are a God of absolute truth, and nothing is hidden from Your sight. Forgive us for the times we have cared more about human recognition than Your approval. Purge our hearts of all hypocrisy, pride, and deceit.
Holy Spirit, search us and know us. If there is any area where we are living a double life or pretending to be something we are not, expose it and lead us to repentance. We ask that You fill us with a spirit of radical authenticity. Grant us the grace to live transparently before You and our community, holding nothing back, and seeking only to bring glory to Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
