IN THEIR GREED … STORIES THEY HAVE MADE UP / 2 PETER 2:3

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

Have you ever heard a testimony that felt a bit too perfect, or a ministry statistic that seemed impossibly inflated? While we want to celebrate God’s work, Scripture warns us to stay vigilant. In 2 Peter 2:3, the Apostle Peter exposes a dark reality that still threatens the church today: “In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories.”

When ministry becomes a business and faith is turned into a product, truth is always the first casualty.

False teachers are experts in manipulation. They do not view the Gospel as a sacred trust to save souls, but as a commercial tool to build personal wealth. By targeting the sincere hearts of believers, they transform the message of Christ into a prosperity scheme designed to fund luxurious lifestyles and expand earthly empires.

How do these ministers trick well-meaning Christians? Peter tells us exactly how: through “stories they have made up.”

To inspire people to give money, they rely on specific tactics:

• Sensational Testimonies: Inventing supernatural encounters or dramatic breakthroughs that never happened.
• Exaggerated Statistics: Inflating salvation numbers, healing reports, or financial needs to create a false sense of momentum.
• Self-Promotion: Using these elaborate tales to honor themselves rather than Christ, directly violating the humility modeled in 2 Corinthians 2:17.

They take advantage of unsuspecting, faithful believers who simply want to support the kingdom of God.

Exploiting God’s people is not a minor offense. Ministers who defile the truth and mislead the flock for personal gain face severe consequences. Scripture is clear that their deceptive success is temporary, and they are ultimately condemned to spiritual destruction.

As believers, we must run our race with endurance and refuse to be tripped up by false promises (Galatians 5:7). Let us anchor our faith deeply in the written Word of God, testing every spirit and every story against the unchanging truth of Scripture.

To protect your faith from fabricated stories, you must evaluate ministries with spiritual discernment.

• Verify the Facts: Check independent sources for financial transparency and actual local impact.
• Evaluate the Doctrine: Match every sermon, book, and testimony directly against clear Scripture.
• Observe the Lifestyle: Look for Christlike humility instead of luxury, self-promotion, and greed.
• Examine the Fruit: Ensure the ministry produces spiritually mature disciples, not just emotional hype.

The Bible provides clear, uncompromised standards for those who lead God’s people. Unlike false teachers driven by greed and self-promotion, true leaders are defined by humility, integrity, and sacrificial service.

“An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, skillful in teaching, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money.” — 1 Timothy 3:2–3

• Blameless Living: A leader’s public and private life must match their preaching.
• Financial Integrity: They must be completely free from the love of money.
• Self-Control: Their behavior must be disciplined, gentle, and respectful.

“Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; nor yet as domineering over those assigned to your care, but by proving to be examples to the flock.” — 1 Peter 5:2–3

• Willing Service: Leading out of love for God, not out of duty or obligation.
• No Sordid Gain: Rejecting ministry as a path to personal wealth or profit.
• Leading by Example: Guiding people through personal behavior, not through control or manipulation.

“For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.” — 2 Corinthians 2:17

• No Peddling: Refusing to turn the Gospel into a commercial product or business.
• Pure Sincerity: Preaching with honest motives, knowing God sees their heart.
• Scriptural Fidelity: Staying strictly accountable to God for how they represent Christ.

“But it is not this way among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant; and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” — Mark 10:43–45

• Servant Heart: Seeking the good of the people rather than personal prestige.
• Christlike Focus: Mirroring Jesus, who gave up His life for others.

As we navigate a world full of loud voices and grand promises, our ultimate safety lies in the unchanging Word of God. False teachers will continue to use fabricated stories to exploit the well-meaning, but their deception cannot stand against a heart anchored in biblical truth.

Let us commit to being a community that tests what we hear, protects the flock, and honors leaders who serve with genuine humility and integrity. God’s grace is sufficient to guide us through any deception, keeping our feet firmly planted on the narrow path.
