(KJV) Numbers 22:22
And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.
The Danger of Half-Hearted Obedience: Lessons from Balaam’s Donkey
We have all been there. We ask God for direction, but deep down, we already know what we want to do. We look for a loophole, a green light, or a concession that allows us to pursue our own desires while keeping up the appearance of faith.
This is the exact trap we see in Numbers 22:22: “But God was very angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him.”
At a glance, this passage puzzles many readers. Didn’t God just tell Balaam he could go with King Balak’s messengers? Why would GOD BE VERY ANGRY at Balaam for doing exactly what He permitted?
The answer lies in the condition of Balaam’s heart, his lingering greed, and a profound spiritual blindness that required a talking donkey to cure.
1. Permission is Not the Same as Approval
King Balak of Moab was terrified of the Israelites, so he offered Balaam a massive fortune to place a prophetic curse on them. God’s initial answer to Balaam was an absolute, non-negotiable “No”. He told him: “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.”
But when Balak sent a second, more prestigious entourage offering even more wealth, Balaam hesitated. Instead of standing firm on God’s clear boundary, he went back to ask again.
God finally permitted him to go, but strictly on the condition that he only say what God commanded. However, Balaam didn’t wait for the proper conditions; he eagerly jumped out of bed, saddled his donkey, and rushed off. God was angry because He saw Balaam’s true motive: he was still actively considering Balak’s offer and harboring greed for personal gain. He wanted the money, and he wanted to find a way to circumvent God’s will.
2. The Tragedy of Spiritual Blindness
What follows is one of the most famous—and sobering—narratives in the Old Testament. As Balaam rides along, the Angel of the Lord stands in the path with a drawn sword, ready to execute him.
Remarkably, the prophet cannot see the spiritual reality right in front of him. But his donkey can.
- The First Time: The donkey veers off the path into a field to save Balaam’s life, and Balaam beats her.
- The Second Time: The donkey crushes Balaam’s foot against a wall trying to squeeze past the Angel, and he beats her again.
- The Third Time: With nowhere left to turn, the donkey simply lays down under Balaam, prompting a third furious beating.
Balaam’s spiritual blindness was complete. A pagan diviner who claimed to see visions from the Almighty was completely oblivious to the judgment standing mere feet away. He was so consumed by his anger, pride, and desire for wealth that he missed the supernatural completely—until God opened the donkey’s mouth to rebuke him.
As the Angel of the Lord later notes in Numbers 22:32-33, if the donkey had not turned away, Balaam would be dead. The animal he was beating was actually his savior.
3. The Takeaway for Our Lives
Balaam’s error, which is heavily warned against in 2 Peter 2:15-16, is the danger of walking in outward compliance while harboring inward rebellion. We can easily fall into the same trap when we:
- Pray until we get the answer we want, rather than accepting the clear boundaries God has already set in His Word.
- Force open doors that God has clearly shut, confusing His allowance of our free will with His divine blessing.
- Lash out at the obstacles in our lives (our metaphorical “donkeys”), failing to realize that the delay, the closed door, or the frustration might actually be God’s mercy blocking us from destruction.
Outward obedience without an aligned heart is a dangerous path. God desires our full devotion, not our reluctant compliance while we keep flirting with the world’s rewards.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us for the times we have tried to negotiate with Your clear commands. Search our hearts today, Lord. If there is any hidden greed, pride, or desire to compromise Your truth for personal gain, expose it and clean it by Your Holy Spirit.
Open our spiritual eyes so that we do not walk in blindness. Give us the discernment to recognize Your hand, even when it comes in the form of a closed door, a delay, or a frustrating obstacle. Help us to see Your protection in our interruptions.
We pray for a heart that does not just seek Your permission, but deeply desires Your presence and Your perfect will. Grant us the grace to obey You fully, purely, and with undivided devotion.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
