SET MY FACE AGAINST YOU / LEVITICUS 26:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 26:17

And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.

When God Turns Away: Understanding the Weight of Leviticus 26:17

We often love to focus on the scriptures that promise God’s favor, His open arms, and His protective shield. Passages like Psalm 23 or the beginning of Leviticus 26—which details the overwhelming blessings of rain in its season, abundant harvests, and peace in the land—fill us with hope.

But true intimacy with God requires us to look at the full picture of His character. He is loving, but He is also holy. He is merciful, but He is also just.

When we read Leviticus 26:17, we encounter one of the most sobering phrases in all of Scripture: “I will set my face against you.”

The Sovereign Withdrawal

The greatest tragedy of sin, rebellion, and disobedience is not just the physical or earthly consequences we suffer. It is the relational rupture between us and our Creator. God, in His perfect holiness and justice, cannot coexist with unrepentant rebellion. When we willfully choose to walk in opposition to Him, a shift occurs.

By continuing in sin and by rejecting God’s presence, care, grace, and strength, we actively expose ourselves to His judgment.

Think of God’s favor as a massive umbrella of protection. When we choose path after path of disobedience, we are not just stepping out from under that umbrella—we are daring the storm. Without His protection and guidance, we open our lives to problems, spiritual dangers, and a profound emptiness that nothing else can fill.

The Price of Rejection vs. The Power of Presence

The price of rejecting God is simply too great to bear. Leviticus 26 paints a stark contrast between a life lived under God’s blessing (Leviticus 26:3–13) and a life lived under His judgment.

When we submit to His leadership, we enjoy His presence, walk securely under His care, and become an active part of His beautiful plan for the world. This is the greatest blessing of human life.

If you feel a distance between yourself and God today, do not run further away. His face is set against rebellion, but His arms remain open to the repentant heart. Turn back to Him, step back into His grace, and let Him restore your protection and peace.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with humbled hearts, recognizing Your absolute holiness and perfect justice. Lord, Your Word reminds us of the terrifying reality of what it means to have Your face set against us because of our sin and rebellion. Forgive us for the times we have chosen our own way, rejected Your guidance, and taken Your protective grace for granted.

We do not want to live a single moment outside of Your presence and care. We ask that You search our hearts today. Reveal any hidden rebellion, complacency, or disobedience within us. Grant us the gift of true repentance, and turn our hearts back toward You.

Lord, we choose to surrender to Your will. We desire to be a part of Your divine plan, to enjoy the fullness of Your presence, and to walk securely under Your loving protection. Guide our steps today, keep us from temptation, and let Your face shine upon us once again.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
