IF YOU WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME / LEVITICUS 26:14-15

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Leviticus 26:14-15

But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; 15 And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:

If You Will Not Listen: Understanding the Heart Behind God’s Discipline

Relationships are built on communication and trust. When we stop listening to the ones who love us, the connection fractures. In Leviticus 26:14-15, God addresses this exact vulnerability with His people, exposing the painful reality of a heart that turns away from its Creator.

The text states: “But if you will not listen to me and will not carry out all these commands, and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant…”

The Pain of Rejected Love

Leviticus 26 is often viewed purely as a chapter of terrifying warnings. However, looking closer reveals God’s profound sorrow and grief. He had just rescued Israel from slavery, performed miracles, and established a deeply personal relationship with them. He desired to walk among them and be their God.

The warnings of judgment were not issued in anger by a tyrant, but in grief by a loving Father. God sincerely desired that harsh discipline would never be necessary for His chosen people. He laid out the boundaries clearly because He knew that rejecting His love would naturally bring destruction.

We Choose Our Own Grief

When Israel chose to ignore God, they were not just breaking arbitrary rules. They were fracturing a relationship. God did not desire to bring sorrow upon them; rather, by abandoning His protection and wisdom, the people brought grief upon themselves.

The same truth applies to our lives today. God’s commands are not walls to keep us in a spiritual prison. They are guardrails designed to keep us safe on the road of life. When we say, “I will not listen,” we actively step out from under His umbrella of grace and choose our own brokenness.

A Call to Return

Discipline is always meant to lead to restoration. God uses the painful consequences of our choices to wake us up, hoping we will turn back to Him. Even in the heaviest warnings of Scripture, the ultimate goal is always reconciliation.

Today, let us check the posture of our hearts. Are we truly listening, or are we drifting into dangerous independence? God is waiting with open arms, desiring intimacy over discipline.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me enough to speak truth into my life, even when it is difficult to hear. Forgive me for the moments when I have ignored Your voice, rejected Your boundaries, and chosen my own path. I know that Your heart breaks when I wander away from Your protection.

Soften my heart today. Help me to listen closely to Your prompts and to trust that Your commands are for my good. Protect me from the pride that leads to spiritual deafness. I want to walk in a vibrant, faithful relationship with You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
