The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine, for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.

Have you ever looked at your bank account, your home, or your possessions and felt a deep sense of ownership? It is natural to feel proud of what we work hard to acquire. However, scripture challenges us to look at our resources through a completely different lens.

In Leviticus 25:23, God delivers a profound truth to the Israelites regarding their inheritance: “The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.”

With these words, God establishes a foundational principle that reshapes how we view everything we have: We are not owners; we are caretakers.

For the ancient Israelites, land was everything. It was their livelihood, their security, and their legacy. Yet, God explicitly reminded them that they were simply tenants on His property. They were given the right to cultivate the land, harvest its fruits, and live in its safety, but they could never claim ultimate ownership. The soil belonged to the Creator.

This Old Testament law is not an outdated concept. It serves as the blueprint for how New Testament followers of Jesus are called to handle material possessions.

Jesus reinforced this mindset through His teachings, most notably in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-27). In the kingdom of God, wealth, talents, time, and resources are entrusted to us by a Master who expects us to manage them wisely.

Consider these three truths about biblical stewardship:

• Character is tested in the small things: How we handle everyday wealth reveals our spiritual maturity (Luke 16:10-12).
• Everything is a gift: We have nothing that we did not receive from God’s hands (1 Corinthians 4:1-7).
• Generosity is the goal: We manage God’s wealth to honor Him and lift up those in need.

When we switch our mindset from “owner” to “caretaker,” our anxiety fades. We no longer have to grip our possessions tightly out of fear of losing them. Instead, we can hold them with an open hand, asking God how He wants us to use His resources today.

Let us step into our role as faithful managers, using what we have been given to love our neighbors and bring glory to the true Owner of all things.

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today acknowledging that everything we see, hold, and enjoy belongs to You. The earth is Yours, and everything in it. Forgive us for the times we have held onto our possessions with tight, selfish fists, forgetting that You are the source of every good gift.

Align our hearts with Your truth today. Remind us daily that we are simply caretakers of Your immense wealth. Grant us the wisdom to manage our finances, our time, and our talents in a way that honors Your name and expands Your kingdom. Give us eyes to see the needs of those around us and the generosity to respond with an open hand.

May we be found faithful with the resources You have entrusted to us, so that one day we may hear You say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
