(KJV) Leviticus 21:17
Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
HAS A DEFECT / LEVITICUS 21:17
None of Aaron’s descendants who had any sort of physical defect or flaw could serve as priests and present offerings for the people (Leviticus 21:17-23). While this may seem unfair or seem to show favoritism, it was meant to be a physical illustration of a more important spiritual point. (This was true of most issues surrounding the priesthood.)
- Complete health and physical wholeness represented God’s purpose that priests be examples of the full life God intended for his people. Being free from physical limitations would allow them to perform their duties more effectively. However, those who were disqualified from serving as ministers could still eat the most holy food (Leviticus 21:22). God was showing that they too had a part in the full salvation and relationship provided by God’s covenant.
- God’s requirement for physical perfection in the priesthood was an illustration of Christ’s moral perfection (Hebrews 9:13-14). It is also a physical picture of God’s spiritual requirements for New Testament leaders, who are not required to be physically flawless but must be blameless and “above reproach” in a spiritual sense (1 Timothy 3:2).
