For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

CONSCIENCE IS CLEAR … DOES NOT MAKE ME INNOCENT / 1 CORINTHIANS 4:4

The word “conscience” literally means “with knowledge.” The conscience is an inner, God-given awareness that confirms to our mind and personality the rightness or wrongness of our actions. While we must always strive to keep a clean and clear conscience in relation to Do (1 Corinthians 10:27; 2 Corinthians 1:12; 1 Timothy 1:5,19; 3:9; Hebrews 9:14; 1 Peter 3:16; 1 Peter 3:21; Acts 24:16), we must also realize that the conscience is not the final authority. In Paul’s case, he was truly innocent of any wrong motivation toward the Corinthian church; yet he still recognized that his final considerations were only human and his own conscience could be mistaken. We also must realize that just because we feel confident about our actions or motivations, we should never be so puffed up with pride that we assume we are always correct in our personal views and actions. That is because if we are not careful, humble and submitted to the standard of God’s Word, our consciences can become insensitive or corrupted (1 Timothy 4:2; Titus 1:15-16). If that happens, we may not even be aware of our sin and misguided perceptions.
