NOT GET A WIFE / GENESIS 24:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 24:2-4

And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.

NOT GET A WIFE / GENESIS 24:3

Abraham knew that God had called him and his descendants to live in a way that was distinctly different from the people around him. This was God’s way of keeping them as a holy (morally pure, spiritually right and separated from evil) people for Himself. That is why Isaac was not allowed to marry a Canaanite woman or to return to the land where Abraham came from (Genesis 24:3,5).

THE TRINITY IN EXAMPLE / MATTHEW 3:17

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:17

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

The Trinity in Example: Glimpsing the Triune God at the Jordan River

The baptism of Jesus Christ is one of the most extraordinary revelations in the entire Bible because it provides a vivid, simultaneous picture of the Holy Trinity. At the banks of the Jordan River, the veil of heaven pulls back to reveal that the one true God exists eternally in three distinct, interrelated, and unified persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

While the word “Trinity” is not explicitly written in the scriptural text, the reality of our Triune God is undeniably stamped across this momentous event.

One Scene, Three Divine Persons

Matthew 3:16-17 shows us the distinct roles and perfect harmony of the Godhead in action:

  • God the Son In Submission: Jesus Christ, who is Himself fully God and equal with the Father, humbles Himself to be baptized in the water. He is not separate from God, but God incarnate standing in the Jordan River.
  • God the Holy Spirit In Presence: The Holy Spirit, who is also fully God and equal with the Father, visibly descends from the opened heavens like a dove, lighting upon Jesus to empower His earthly ministry.
  • God the Father In Declaration: God the Father speaks directly from heaven. He breaks the silence to claim and validate the Son, declaring: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17).
[ God the Father ] --> Speaks affirmation from Heaven
               |
               v
[ God the Spirit ] --> Descends like a dove
               |
               v
[ God the Son ] --> Stands baptized in the Jordan

Unified, Not Divided

This beautiful encounter reminds us that we do not worship three separate gods. We worship one God in three persons who possess the exact same divine essence, power, and authority.

The same perfect unity displayed at the Jordan River is echoed throughout the New Testament. We see this foundational truth woven into the fabric of Scripture:

  • The Great Commission commands us to baptize in the singular name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).
  • Apostolic blessings ground our daily walk in the grace of Jesus, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Spirit (2 Corinthians 13:14).
  • Our election and salvation are secured by the foreknowledge of the Father, the sanctification of the Spirit, and the blood of Jesus (1 Peter 1:2).

When you view Jesus at the Jordan, you are looking at the beautiful mystery of divine community. The Father loves the Son, the Son obeys the Father, and the Spirit seals and mediates that love to the world. As believers, we are invited to step into the overflow of that eternal fellowship.

Closing Prayer to the Triune God

Heavenly Father,
We stand in awe of the beautiful mystery of Your nature. Thank You for opening the heavens at the Jordan River to show us who You are. We praise You, Father, for Your voice of love and affirmation over Christ, which now extends to us through faith. We praise You, Lord Jesus, for Your perfect obedience, humility, and willingness to stand in our place. We praise You, Holy Spirit, for Your constant presence, resting upon us, guiding us, and filling us with divine power.

Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—help us to live in the reality of Your unified love today. May our lives reflect the harmony, community, and devotion that You demonstrate within Yourself.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

SPIRIT … ON HIM / MATTHEW 3:16

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:16

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

The Secret to Jesus’ Power (And It’s Available to You)

Matthew 3:16 marks a pivotal shift in history: “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.”

This moment was not just a beautiful visual event. It was the formal equipping of Jesus for His earthly mission. If you have ever wondered how Jesus accomplished the impossible, the answer lies entirely in this moment.

1. He Kept His Divinity, But Chose Dependence

Even though Jesus was fully God, He willingly laid aside and limited His divine rights and privileges. In becoming fully human, He chose to operate the exact same way we must. He lived as a man completely dependent on God’s Holy Spirit.

2. The Power Behind Every Miracle

Everything Jesus did—His bold preaching, His miraculous healings, His physical suffering, and His ultimate victory over sin and Satan’s power—He did by the power of the Holy Spirit. Scripture reminds us that Jesus could do nothing apart from the Spirit’s power (Luke 4:1; Luke 4:14; Luke 4:18-19; John 3:34; Acts 1:2; Acts 10:38). The Spirit equipped and worked powerfully through Him to restore our relationship with God.

3. The Same Spirit Lives in You

Jesus did not keep this power to Himself. His ultimate plan was to baptize His followers with that very same Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11). Because of His victory, you now have access to the exact same Spirit to accomplish His purposes in your daily life (Acts 1:5; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4). You do not have to walk through life in your own strength.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the example of Jesus, who showed us what a life fully surrendered to Your Spirit looks like. Forgive me for the times I try to handle life, temptation, and trial in my own weak strength. Holy Spirit, just as You alighted upon Jesus at the Jordan River, I ask that You fill me fresh today.

Equip me with Your power to overcome sin, to speak Your truth, and to serve the people around me. I choose to lay down my self-reliance and rely completely on Your strength. Let Your power work through me to accomplish Your kingdom purposes today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

JESUS … BAPTIZED / MATTHEW 3:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:13

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

The Meaning Behind the Mystery: Why Was Jesus Baptized?

When we read Matthew 3:13, we encounter a moment that feels deeply paradoxical. Jesus, the sinless Son of God, approaches John the Baptist at the Jordan River and asks to be baptized. John himself is hesitant, knowing he is the one who needs baptism from Jesus.

Why would the Savior of the world submit to a baptism of repentance?

The answer reveals the very heart of Christ’s mission on earth. Jesus did not enter the waters to wash away personal sin. Instead, His baptism served three profound purposes that set the stage for His public ministry.

1. To Fulfill All Righteousness

When John hesitates, Jesus responds in Matthew 3:15, saying it is necessary “to fulfill all righteousness.” By stepping into the Jordan, Jesus made a public declaration that He was ready to submit to and fulfill every single one of God’s requirements. Just as Leviticus outlines the washing required for priests entering ministry, Jesus marks His formal entry into His earthly mission. He came to live the perfect life under the law that we never could (Galatians 4:4-5).

2. To Identify with Sinners

Baptism in the Jordan was a public confession of sin and a desire for cleansing. Jesus had no sin, needed no repentance, and required no course correction in His life (2 Corinthians 5:21). Yet, by standing in the same muddy water as broken, hurting people, He chose to identify with us. In this act, He signaled that He did not come to distance Himself from our mess, but to carry our infirmities and bear our sins (1 Peter 2:24).

3. To Endorse God’s New Movement

John the Baptist was the voice crying out in the wilderness, preparing the way for the Lord. He called people to turn from their own ways, repent, and prepare for God’s spiritual kingdom. By receiving John’s baptism, Jesus publicly validated this divine movement. He aligned Himself with the call for total spiritual renewal, paving the way for all who would choose to accept and follow Him (John 1:23, 32-33).

Final Thoughts

Jesus’ baptism was not about a personal need for cleansing, but about a public commitment to our rescue. It shows us a Savior who is fully obedient to the Father and deeply connected to humanity. When we look at the Jordan River, we see the beginning of the path that would ultimately lead to the cross.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We stand in awe of the humility of Your Son, Jesus. Thank You for the profound reminder in Matthew 3:13 of how deeply He chose to identify with our brokenness. We praise You that He lived the perfect life of righteousness that we could never achieve on our own.

Lord, help us to follow His example of radical obedience. Give us the courage to publicly align ourselves with Your kingdom and Your truth. May our lives reflect a continuous turning away from our own ways and a daily turning toward You. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, just as the Spirit descended upon Jesus at the Jordan, so that we may live lives that are pleasing in Your sight.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

WILL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT / MATTHEW 3:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:11

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

The Dual Fire: Understanding Matthew 3:11 and the Work of the Messiah

When John the Baptist stepped out of the wilderness, his message was a jarring wake-up call. He washed people in the waters of the Jordan, but he knew his baptism was only a shadow of what was to come. Pointing ahead to Jesus, John declared, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11).

This short phrase carries an immense, dual weight. It promises both breathtaking spiritual empowerment and an urgent warning of final accountability.

The Refining Fire of the Spirit

For believers, the baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire is an invitation into radical transformation. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended as tongues of fire, marking the birth of the Church. This fire represents:

  • Spiritual Power: It provides the supernatural boldness needed to live for Christ and spread His message globally.
  • Passionate Enthusiasm: It turns cold, routine religion into a vibrant, burning devotion.
  • Purifying Presence: Like a refiner’s fire, the Holy Spirit works within us to burn away sin, purify our motives, and shape us into the image of Jesus.

The Consuming Fire of Judgment

While many scholars focus on the purifying nature of fire, the immediate context of Matthew 3 demands a second look. In the very next verse, John warns that the Messiah will clear His threshing floor, gathering the wheat into the barn but burning the chaff with “unquenchable fire.”

Because John the Baptist looked at history through the lens of Old Testament prophecy, he saw the Messiah’s work as one grand event. He did not explicitly see the thousands of years stretching between Christ’s first and second comings.

  • The First Coming: Jesus arrived as the Savior. He came to redeem humanity and baptize His followers in the life-giving Holy Spirit.
  • The Second Coming: Jesus will return as the Judge. He will permanently separate the wheat from the chaff—the godly from the ungodly. The “unquenchable fire” John warned about aligns directly with the final judgment described in the book of Revelation.

Living in the Light of Eternity

We currently live in the beautiful time gap between the first and second comings of Christ. The door of grace is wide open. Today, the fire of God is not meant to consume you in judgment, but to consume you with His love, power, and holiness.

Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to refine you today? Let Him burn away the distractions, ignite your passion for His Word, and empower you to be a witness to a world that desperately needs His truth.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, not just to forgive my sins, but to baptize me with the Holy Spirit and fire. I ask that You ignite a fresh passion inside my heart today. Let Your Holy Spirit purify my thoughts, burn away my selfish desires, and refine my character. Grant me supernatural boldness and power to live for You and boldly share Your gospel with others. Keep my eyes fixed on eternity, regularizing my heart so that I live ready for the day of Your return.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.

FRUIT IN KEEPING WITH REPENTANCE / MATTHEW 3:8

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:8

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

Fruit in Keeping with Repentance: More Than Just Words

We live in a world of talk. It is easy to say the right things, post the right verses, and claim a certain identity. But in Matthew 3:8, John the Baptist delivers a sharp, disruptive wake-up call to the religious crowd of his day—and to us: “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”

John was not interested in religious credentials. He was looking for change.

In spiritual terms, producing fruit means showing outward evidence of true inward faith. It is the visible proof of what God is doing inside your heart. Genuine repentance is never static. It always leads to an active, living faith and godly behavior.

What Does Godly Fruit Look Like?

True repentance changes how you live. Scripture gives us clear markers of what this fruit looks like in daily life:

  • Changed Character: Developing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  • Active Compassion: Seeking justice, helping the hurting, and sharing what you have with those in need (Luke 3:10-14).
  • Godly Behavior: Walking in integrity, choosing honesty in business, and speaking truth in love.

Repentance is not just about being sorry for the past. It is about turning around and moving in a completely new direction.

The Danger of Inaction

Jesus and John the Baptist both used the imagery of agriculture to warn us about a faith that does not perform. A tree that does not produce good fruit is useless to the farmer.

Those who claim to believe in Christ, yet show no visible growth or good fruit, are like barren trees. The Bible warns that, in the end, these trees will be cut down and thrown into the fire (Matthew 3:10). God desires authenticity, not just an appearance of godliness.

Take a moment today to look at the branches of your life. Does your daily routine, your speech, and your treatment of others reflect a heart that has been transformed by God? Let your faith be visible. Produce the fruit that honors Him.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Search my heart today. Forgive me for the times I have offered You empty words instead of a changed life. Holy Spirit, work deeply within me. Transform my thoughts and desires so that my actions reflect Your grace. Help me to produce good fruit—fruit of character, compassion, and righteousness—that brings glory to Your name. Keep me from a hollow, inactive faith, and lead me into a life of genuine obedience.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PHARISEES AND SADDUCEES / MATTHEW 3:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:7

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Choosing a Heart That Connects, Not a Heart That Corrects

We often look at the pages of the Gospels and treat the Pharisees and Sadducees like fictional villains in a story. They wear the black hats; we wear the white ones. But if we look closer into the mirror of Scripture—specifically Matthew 3:7—we might find that their ancient traps are still being set for our modern hearts.

When John the Baptist stood by the Jordan River, he saw these two powerful groups marching toward him. He did not give them a polite welcome. Instead, he challenged their very foundations.

To understand why, we have to understand who they were and why their approach to faith failed them.

The Two Traps of Empty Religion

The Pharisees and Sadducees represented two completely different ways to miss the heart of God.

1. The Pharisee Trap: Outward Performance, Inward Pride

The Pharisees knew their Bibles. They were fiercely committed to the Old Testament, but they viewed it through a lens of rigid human interpretation. They believed that if you checked every box, followed every rule, and looked perfectly holy on the outside, you earned your way into God’s favor.

The tragedy of the Pharisee is that their religion was purely an outward display. They missed the entire purpose of the law, which was to show them their need for a Savior. They refused to acknowledge the corruption of their own hearts, trading a vibrant relationship with God for a checklist. They wanted a political Messiah to conquer their worldly enemies, completely ignoring the fact that Christ came to conquer the sin inside of them.

2. The Sadducee Trap: Skepticism and Secular Comfort

The Sadducees took the opposite route. They were the political elite, wealthy, influential, and deeply non-traditional. While they claimed to follow God’s law, they stripped it of its power. They denied the supernatural, rejected the resurrection, and didn’t believe in angels, miracles, or a judgment to come.

For the Sadducees, faith was a tool for social status and political leverage. Because they didn’t believe in an eternal future, living a godly life wasn’t important to them. They were comfortable in the world, compromised by culture, and deeply threatened by Jesus’ message of an eternal kingdom.

The Common Ground: A Hard Heart

Though they argued constantly about theology and politics, the Pharisees and Sadducees united on one thing: their opposition to Jesus.

Why? Because Jesus demanded the one thing neither group wanted to give—a transformed heart.

  • To the Pharisee, Jesus said that rules without love are useless.
  • To the Sadducee, Jesus said that religion without the supernatural is dead.

True faith is not a matter of rigid legalism, nor is it a matter of convenient skepticism. God does require our obedience, but it must be a heartfelt response that flows out of true love for Him. It is a matter of the heart and the spirit, not just a matter of outer routine.

When John the Baptist saw them coming to his baptism, he called them to “bear fruit in keeping with repentance.” He was telling them to stop hiding behind their labels, their heritage, and their rituals. He was calling them to get real with God.

Checking Our Own Hearts Today

It is easy to slip into these same mindsets today.

We fall into the Pharisee trap when we judge others by our own standards, focus on looking good to our church community, and mistake our external religious habits for true spiritual health.

We fall into the Sadducee trap when we compromise our values to fit in with the culture, live as practical atheists who forget the reality of eternity, and minimize the supernatural power of God in our daily lives.

Jesus invites us out of both traps. He offers us a third way: a life of humble, honest, and heartfelt love for Him. Today, let’s ask God to break down our outward pretenses and renew our spirits from the inside out.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today acknowledging that our hearts are prone to wander. Forgive us for the times we act like the Pharisees, focusing so much on looking right to the world that we neglect the hidden condition of our hearts. Forgive us for our pride, our self-righteousness, and our checklists.

Forgive us, too, for the times we act like the Sadducees. Forgive us for compromising with the world, for doubting Your supernatural power, and for living as if this earthly life is all that matters.

Search us, O God, and know our hearts. Test us and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Grant us the grace to live lives marked by true repentance and authentic love for You. Let our obedience be a joyful response to Your mercy, not a burden of rules. We ask that You transform us from the inside out so that our lives bear fruit that brings glory to Your name.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN – REPENT / MATTHEW 3:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Matthew 3:2

And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Embracing the King: What the “Kingdom of Heaven” Means for You Today

Have you ever read a phrase in the Bible so many times that your eyes just glide right over it? For many of us, that phrase is the “Kingdom of Heaven.”

In Matthew 3:2, John the Baptist delivers a jarring, urgent message to the world: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

But what does this actually mean for our daily lives? Let’s unpack why Matthew chose these specific words and how they change everything about our present and our future.

The Meaning Behind the Words

The “Kingdom of Heaven” is not a physical place with golden gates floating in the clouds. Instead, it refers to God’s unlimited power, sovereignty, and absolute authority over all things.

When John the Baptist and Jesus declared that this kingdom was “at hand,” they were announcing a radical shift. They were saying that God’s perfect rule and His eternal purposes are actively being fulfilled right now on earth, just as they will continue to be throughout all eternity.

Why Matthew Said “Kingdom of Heaven”

If you read the Gospels of Mark, Luke, and John, you will notice they almost always use the expression “Kingdom of God.” Matthew, however, stands alone. The phrase “Kingdom of Heaven” is found 33 times in the New Testament—and only in the Gospel of Matthew.

Why the difference? It comes down to the audience:

  • Cultural Respect: Matthew wrote his Gospel primarily for Jewish Christians. Out of deep reverence and holy fear, most Jewish people strictly avoided using the explicit name of God to ensure they never took it in vain.
  • Prophetic Fulfillment: Matthew used “Kingdom of Heaven” as a respectful alternative that his Jewish audience would instantly understand. His goal was to show them exactly how Old Testament prophecy was being fulfilled in the person of Jesus.
  • The Verdict: Jesus Himself likely used both phrases interchangeably depending on who He was speaking to, as they carry the exact same spiritual weight.

Living in the Kingdom Today

John’s message was simple: Repent, because the Kingdom is here. Repentance means to change your mind, turn around, and align your life with a new reality.

The King has arrived, and His authority changes how we live. We no longer have to live under the tyranny of fear, sin, or anxiety. We can submit our lives to the good, powerful, and unlimited authority of a God who is actively renewing the world.

A Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your unlimited power and unmatched authority over all creation. We stand in awe of the truth that Your sovereign purposes are being fulfilled right now on this earth, and that Your good rule will endure for all eternity.

Forgive us for the times we try to rule our own lives. We repent and turn our hearts back to You today. Help us to submit to Your leadership and to live as faithful citizens of Your heavenly kingdom. Let Your peace, justice, and love reign in our hearts, our families, and our communities.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

THE FIELD … AS A BURIAL SITE / GENESIS 23:20

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 23:20

And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.

THE FIELD … AS A BURIAL SITE / GENESIS 23:20

The Bible indicates that the only portion of land Abraham ever possessed in Canaan, the land spoken of in the promises of the covenant, was a grave (Hebrews 11:8-9). His descendants did not take possession of the promised land until Joshua’s time. This shows how true faith and trust in God is patient and looks beyond this life for its reward (Hebrews 11:13). Believers, like Abraham. Must set their hearts’ desires on a heavenly country where God “has prepared a city for them” (Hebrews 11:16; Genesis 11:10).

And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, 16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: 17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

BECAUSE YOU HAVE OBEYED ME / GENESIS 22:15-18

Because of Abraham’s sincere obedience, demonstrated by his willingness to sacrifice his son, God renewed His covenant promise with him. The “offspring” that would ultimately and supremely bless the nations refers to Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:8, 16, 18).
