START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION
(KJV) Matthew 3:8
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Fruit in Keeping with Repentance: More Than Just Words
We live in a world of talk. It is easy to say the right things, post the right verses, and claim a certain identity. But in Matthew 3:8, John the Baptist delivers a sharp, disruptive wake-up call to the religious crowd of his day—and to us: “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”
John was not interested in religious credentials. He was looking for change.
In spiritual terms, producing fruit means showing outward evidence of true inward faith. It is the visible proof of what God is doing inside your heart. Genuine repentance is never static. It always leads to an active, living faith and godly behavior.
What Does Godly Fruit Look Like?
True repentance changes how you live. Scripture gives us clear markers of what this fruit looks like in daily life:
- Changed Character: Developing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
- Active Compassion: Seeking justice, helping the hurting, and sharing what you have with those in need (Luke 3:10-14).
- Godly Behavior: Walking in integrity, choosing honesty in business, and speaking truth in love.
Repentance is not just about being sorry for the past. It is about turning around and moving in a completely new direction.
The Danger of Inaction
Jesus and John the Baptist both used the imagery of agriculture to warn us about a faith that does not perform. A tree that does not produce good fruit is useless to the farmer.
Those who claim to believe in Christ, yet show no visible growth or good fruit, are like barren trees. The Bible warns that, in the end, these trees will be cut down and thrown into the fire (Matthew 3:10). God desires authenticity, not just an appearance of godliness.
Take a moment today to look at the branches of your life. Does your daily routine, your speech, and your treatment of others reflect a heart that has been transformed by God? Let your faith be visible. Produce the fruit that honors Him.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Search my heart today. Forgive me for the times I have offered You empty words instead of a changed life. Holy Spirit, work deeply within me. Transform my thoughts and desires so that my actions reflect Your grace. Help me to produce good fruit—fruit of character, compassion, and righteousness—that brings glory to Your name. Keep me from a hollow, inactive faith, and lead me into a life of genuine obedience.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
