DEATH REIGNED FROM THE TIME OF ADAM TO THE TIME OF MOSES / ROMANS 5:14

Before God ever gave His written law through Moses, the human race experienced death and separation from God. This was not because they disobeyed God’s spoken law (His direct command) with its death penalty, as did Adam (Romans 5:13-14: Genesis 2:17). Instead, it was because they were sinners by their own actions as well as by human nature, violating the law of conscience – their inner sense of right and wrong – that was written in their minds and hearts (Romans 2:14-15).

SIN ENTERED THE WORLD THROUGH ONE MAN / ROMANS 5:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 5:12  

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

SIN ENTERED THE WORLD THROUGH ONE MAN / ROMANS 5:12

The first man, Adam, gave in to temptation and disobeyed God’s direct command. Therefore, sin, or rebellion against God, as an active principle or power gained entrance into the human race (Romans 5:17, 19; Genesis 3; 1 Corinthians 15:21-22).

  1. Two results followed: (a) Sin and corruption entered Adam’s heart and life and became part of his being. (b) Adam then passed on sin into the life-stream of the human race, corrupting all people from then on. All humans are now born into the world with an impulse and pull toward sin and evil; it is now part of our nature (Romans 5:19; 1:21; 7:24; Genesis 6:5; Genesis 6:12; Genesis 8:21; Psalms 14:1-3; Jeremiah 17:9; Mark 7:21-22; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Galatians 5:19-21; Galatians 5:21; Ephesians 2:1-3; Colossians 1:21; 1 John 5:19).
  2. Paul does not explain exactly how Adam’s sin is passed on to his descendants. Nor does he say that all people were present in Adam and that somehow, we all participated in his sin and inherited his guilt. Nowhere does Paul say that Adam was the representative head of his descendants (the human race) and that his sin was charged to all humanity. The fact is that all people follow their own sinful desires and go their own God-defying way. As a result, we all are guilty before God because of our own personal sin. The only teaching supported by the Bible is that men and women inherit a moral corruption and a strong pull toward sin and evil (Romans 6:1).
  3. Death entered the world through sin, and now all people are subject to death “because all sinned” (Romans 5:12, 14; 3:23; Genesis 2:17; 3:19). Both the immediate and final consequence of Adam’s original sin was spiritual death, which is separation from God.

WE WERE GOD’S ENEMIES

Man is the enemy of God, not the reverse. People have offended God with their sin; yet He is the One who provided the way to end the hostility and reunite us with Himself. He did the through the sin-forgiving sacrifice of His Son, Jesus (Romans 5:11; Colossians 1:21-22).

SAVED THROUGH HIS LIFE

Accepting God’s gracious gift of forgiveness, made available through Jesus’ personal sacrifice, is the first step of spiritual salvation (Romans 3:21-26; Romans 3:21; Romans 3:22; Romans 3:24; Romans 3:25; Romans 4:5-9; Romans 4:5). It is the point at which we begin to walk the path of personal companionship with Christ toward the destination of eternal life with Him. We continue to be saved as we live by faith and obedience of Christ. If God loved us enough to send His Son to die for us while we were His enemies (Romans 5:8), how much more, now that we are His children, will He make every provision to preserve our relationship with Him as we continue to live by faith. If we are forgiven and made right with God through Jesus’ sacrificial death, how much more does His resurrection from the dead guarantee our salvation and eternal life with God (Romans 4:22-5:2; 5:9-10; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Philippians 2:12-16; Colossians 3:3-4; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 2 Timothy 2:12; James 1:12; Revelation 2:7).

And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

HOPE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT

The word translated as “hope” (Greek elpis) is different than the typical meaning we connect with the word today. Hope usually means looking toward something that might happen, depending on certain circumstances. But true Biblical “hope” is not wishful thinking about something good that might happen in the future. It is a confidence from God concerning His promises, which makes it sure and leaves no room for doubt, because it is based on God’s Word. We will experience the reality of this hope because God is “the God of hope”, which means that He Himself is the object and assurance of our hope.

GOD HAS POURED OUT HIS LOVE INTO OUR HEARTS

Christians experience the love of God through the Holy Spirit, especially in times of trouble. The tense of the verb “poured out” expresses an existing condition based on a prior action. We have received God’s love, and the Spirit continues to flood our hearts with love. It is this ever-present experience of God’s love that encourages and holds us secure in sufferings (Romans 5:3) and assures us that our hope for future glory is not a wishful imagination (Romans 5:4-5). Christ’s return for us is certain (Romans 8:17; Psalms 22:4-5; John 14:3).

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

WE ALSO REJOICE IN OUR SUFFERINGS / ROMANS 5:3

Paul lists “sufferings” as one of the blessings of our salvation and renewed relationship with God through Christ.

  1. The word “sufferings” refers to all kinds of troubles and difficulties that may affect our lives. This includes such things as the pressures of school or jobs, family situations, financial or physical needs, tragic circumstances, sorrow, sickness, persecution, mistreatment or loneliness.
  2. In the middle of these troubles, God assures us of His presence, enables us to depend on Him and helps us grow closer to Him. Through tough times we also gain strength and maturity (James 1:3-4; James 1:4) that help us to overcome other difficulties in life. Instead of driving us to despair, suffering produces perseverance (Romans 5:3), perseverance produces character (Romans 5:4), and proven character results in a mature hope – a hope that looks to the future with God and that will not disappoint (Romans 5:5).
  3. God’s grace lets us look beyond our present problems to find hope in our relationship with God. In the end, that hope is focused on the certainty of Jesus’ return to rescue His people from this evil world and to establish His reign with them in the new heaven and new earth (1 Thessalonians 4:13; Revelation 19 – 22). But in this waiting time, “God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit” (Romans 5:5) to comfort us in our troubles and bring Christ’s presence near (John 14:16-23; John 1416).

Justification through faith brings the believer various results: a renewed relationship with God, peace with God, grace (Romans 4:16), hope, assurance, sufferings, the love of God, the presence of Holy Spirit, freedom from God’s wrath and punishment, continual access to God’s presence through Christ and joy in our relationship with God (Romans 5:1-11).

CURSED BE CANAAN / GENESIS 9:24-25

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 9:24-25

And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.

25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

CURSED BE CANAAN / GENESIS 9:24-25

When Noah learned of Ham’s shameful action, he pronounced a curse on Hon’s son, Canaan (not on Ham himself).

  1. Perhaps Canaan was somehow involved in Ham’s sin or had the same character faults as his father. Perhaps, since Ham had brought open shame upon his father, he himself would be humiliated through his son. The curse indicated that Canaan’s descendants would be oppressed by other nations. In contrast, God would bless Shem’s and Japheth’s descendants (Genesis 9:26-27).
  2. However, Noah’s prophecy was conditional for everyone involved. Any of Canaan’s descendants who turned to God would also receive blessings (Joshua 6:22-25; Hebrews 11:31). Also, any descendants of Shem and Japheth wo rejected God would experience the curse made on Canaan (Jeremiah 18:7-10).

DRANK SOME OF ITS WINE, HE BECAME DRUNK / GENESIS 9:21

The first mention of wine in Scripture is connected with drunkenness, sin, shame and a curse (Genesis 9:21-25). Throughout the Bible, drunkenness caused disasters and poor judgment. The sin of drunkenness destroys the individual and affects all his relationships (Proverbs 23:21; Galatians 5:21; 1 Peter 4:3; 31:4; Leviticus 10:9; Numbers 6:3; Judges 13:4-7; 1 Thessalonians 5:6; Titus 2:2).

THE HOLY SEED / ISAIAH 6:13

God encouraged Isaiah by telling him that a few faithful people would believe and respond to his message and be spared from the destruction that would come to those who would come to those who would resist. Through this new Judah, God would work out His plan of salvation for the world, bringing people of all nations back into a right relationship with God. Even today, when God judges a spiritually rebellious and ineffective church, God will preserve and work through those who remain faithful and holy – spiritually pure, separated from evil and dedicated to God and His Word.
