Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.

In Exodus 25, God gives specific instructions for making and setting up the tabernacle – the portable “house of God” and place of worship. The historical, spiritual, symbolic and prophetic significance of the tabernacle is based on what the Bible says about it. 

1. The tabernacle was a “sanctuary” (Exodus 25:8), a place for God to meet with His people in a special way (Exodus 25:22; 29:45-46; Numbers 5:3; Ezekiel 43:7, 9). God’s visible glory was over the tabernacle day and night. When God’s glory moved, Israel had to move. This is how God showed them when and where to move. This happened all the time when they were in the desert (Exodus 40:36-38; Numbers 9:15-16). 
2. It was a “tabernacle of the Testimony” (Exodus 38:21) because it contained the Ten Commandments (Exodus 25:10), which served as a constant reminder of God’s holiness (purity, perfection, completeness of character and separation from evil) and His requirements. Our relationship to God can never be separated from our obedience to His laws and guidelines.
3. It was the place where God provided forgiveness of sins through a blood sacrifice (Exodus 29:10-14). In this way, it pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The big difference is that Jesus’ perfect sacrifice provided complete forgiveness for sins, once and for all. His sacrifice made forgiveness available to anyone who would receive His sacrifice and entrust their lives to Him (Hebrews 8:1-2; 9:11-14).
4. It pointed to heaven were Christ, our eternal high priest, lives. He forever will be our advocate and supporter. He is always offering up effective prayers for us (Hebrews 9:11-12, 24-28).
5. It was a prophecy that pointed toward God’s final stage of restoring His relationship with people. At the end of time, there will be a new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21:1). At that time, “the dwelling [literally, tabernacle] of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them” (Revelation 21:3). 

At Exodus 35:4, Moses begins to give the people their official and specific assignments relating to all God’s instructions for building the tabernacle and all its furnishings. They begin by receiving a freewill, or voluntary, offering (Exodus 35:5 – 36:8). Next, Moses starts to assign tasks to various individuals. God wants His people to be involved in His purposes.
