START YOUR DAY RIGHT DEVOTION
(KJV) Galatians 5:17-18
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
The Battle Within: Understanding the Spiritual Conflict in Galatians 5:17-18
Every true believer understands the reality of an internal tug-of-war. One moment you desire to love, forgive, and seek God; the next moment, an old irritation, selfish ambition, or ungodly desire rears its head. If you have ever felt frustrated by this constant internal friction, take heart: you are experiencing the defining battlefield of the Christian life.
In Galatians 5:17-18, the Apostle Paul exposes this daily struggle and offers the definitive key to victory.
The Reality of the Internal Conflict
Paul writes: “For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
This spiritual conflict involves your entire being—your mind, body, and spirit. When you surrender your life to Christ, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you. However, your old sinful nature (often called the flesh) does not quietly disappear. Instead, it wages a continuous war against the Spirit’s presence.
The struggle is simple yet profound: Will you give in to your own selfish desires and yield to sin’s control, or will you surrender to the Spirit’s promptings and remain under Christ’s authority?
The Lifelong Battlefield
This battlefield is not out in the world; it is within each Christian. Scripture reminds us that this conflict will continue throughout our earthly lives. It is a necessary testing ground if we are to reign with Christ in the future.
In Romans 7, Paul openly describes his own agonizing struggle with the flesh, proving that even the most mature believers face this tension. The enemy wants you to believe that experiencing this struggle means you are a failure or a hypocrite. In reality, feeling the tension proves that the Holy Spirit is alive and active within you. A dead corpse does not fight back, but a living spirit resists the corruption of the flesh.
Winning the Battle Over the Flesh
How do we win a war that lasts a lifetime? The answer is not found in human willpower, strict rules, or self-effort. Trying to fight the flesh with the flesh always leads to failure and legalism.
Victory comes through two daily actions:
- Relying on the power of the Holy Spirit: Acknowledge your inability to live the Christian life on your own. Lean on His strength when temptation strikes.
- Following His guidance: Walk step-by-step in obedience to the Word of God and the gentle promptings of the Spirit.
By actively yielding to the Holy Spirit, you starve the sinful nature of its power. You cannot eliminate the presence of the flesh on this side of eternity, but through the Spirit, you can absolutely break its control over your life. Step out of the heavy burden of the law and step into the freedom of being led by the Spirit.
A Closing Prayer for Spiritual Victory
Heavenly Father,
I come before You acknowledging the intense battle that rages within my own heart. Forgive me for the times I have yielded to my sinful nature, tolerated selfish desires, and tried to fight temptation in my own limited strength.
Thank You for placing Your Holy Spirit inside me. I ask today for a fresh filling of Your Spirit. Give me the discernment to recognize the subtle traps of the flesh and the courage to say no to ungodly desires. Awaken my spiritual senses to hear Your voice, and give me a willing heart to follow Your guidance instantly.
I surrender my mind, my body, and my spirit to Your authority. Teach me how to walk by the Spirit daily so that I do not gratify the desires of the flesh. Thank You for the victory that is already mine through Jesus Christ. Strength me to endure, to overcome, and to honor You in everything I do.
In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
