THAT WHICH WAS FROM THE BEGINNING – SEEN WITH OUR EYES OUR HAND HAVE TOUCHED / 1 JOHN 1:1

 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

1 John 1:1 anchors our faith in the undeniable reality that the eternal God entered human history as a flesh-and-blood man. In a world filled with abstract philosophies and shifting spiritualities, the Apostle John opens his first letter with a powerful, grounded testimony: “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.”

This profound declaration reminds us that Christianity is not built on clever myths or detached cosmic theories, but on a historical Person whom real people heard, saw, and physically touched.

John purposely mirrors the grand opening of his Gospel (“In the beginning was the Word…”) to establish the absolute authority of Jesus Christ. Before the universe was framed, Christ existed. Yet, the emphasis here is not just on His eternal divinity, but on the mind-bending reality that this eternal Creator stepped directly into our finite timeline. He is the ultimate anchor point for human existence.

During the first century, a dangerous false teaching known as early Gnosticism began to infect the church. Gnostics argued that the spiritual realm was inherently good, while the physical world (matter) was completely evil. To them, the idea of a holy God taking on a physical human body was repulsive. They claimed that Jesus was merely a phantom—a spirit who only appeared to have a body.

John completely shatters this heresy by using intensely sensory language. He leaves no room for debate:

• “We have heard” – They listened to His voice, His laughter, and His definitive teachings.
• “Seen with our eyes” – They watched Him walk on water, weep at gravesites, and bleed on a cross.
• “Our hands have touched” – They leaned against Him at dinner and physically felt the scars of His resurrection.

Jesus was not a phantom or a spiritual concept to be unlocked by a secret, elite knowledge (gnosis). He was fully God and fully man (Hebrews 2:14), offering salvation not through an escape from the physical body, but through faith in His physical sacrifice and resurrection.

If Jesus was not truly human, He could not have died in our place. If He was not truly God, His sacrifice would not have the power to save us. Because He became flesh, He understands our physical pain, our exhaustion, our temptations, and our grief. Our faith is tangible. It is rooted in history, validated by eyewitnesses, and experienced personally in our lives today.

Heavenly Father, Almighty Creator from the beginning, we stand in awe of the mystery of the Gospel. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to step out of eternity and into our broken, physical world. We thank You that He is not a distant concept, but a Savior who can be known, trusted, and leaned upon.

Forgive us for the times we treat our faith as a mere philosophy rather than a living relationship with a real Person. Help us to anchor our souls in the absolute truth of His humanity and His divinity. May we, like John, boldly proclaim the Word of life to a world desperately searching for truth. In the holy and tangible name of Jesus, Amen.
