THE FOOL / PSALMS 14:1-7

(KJV) Psalms 14:1-7

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord. 5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous. 6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge. 7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

THE FOOL / PSALMS 14:1-7

The fool is a person who lives as if there is no God. Fools reveal their rebellion against God in two ways. 

  1. They reject God’s revelation in the sense that they do not believe what the Bible says about God. In fact, they ridicule and show open disrespect and rejection of the moral principles of God’s Word, relying on their own ideas to determine right from wrong (Psalms 14:1-3).
  2. They do not pursue any kind of a relationship with God, nor do they acknowledge Him or pray for His help.

This psalm describes the moral corruption of the wicked and teaches that the human race is by nature separated from and opposed to God (Ephesians 2:2-3). Paul quotes the first three verses of this psalm to support the truth that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23; 3:10-12).

God’s delay must stir up our trust in His unfailing love. Each believer has the testimony of the past as a witness of this truth – God has blessed and rescued us and others many times. In His own way and time, God will show His great love for His people (Romans 8:28).

WILL YOU FORGET ME FOREVER? / PSALMS 13:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Psalms 13:1

How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

WILL YOU FORGET ME FOREVER? / PSALMS 13:1

The psalm writer is depressed, discouraged and in desperate trouble. God seems far away and unwilling to help. But the people of God should keep in mind two important lessons:

  1. The prayers of godly people may not be answered quickly, but God does hear their prayers. This feeling of being abandoned by God may occur in times of sickness, financial need or severe problems involving family, work, school or church. At such times, we should pray for the Holy Spirit to give us peace and patience. The Bible teaches us that we still have reason to rejoice in the fact that we are spiritually saved and have a personal relationship with God (Psalms 13:5-6) – one that is not based on feelings or circumstances. 
  2. If we are depending on God through faith in Jesus Christ, then God’s delay does not mean that He has abandoned us. He may instead be planning to accomplish some unknown purpose in our lives (2 Corinthians 12:7-10; Hebrews 12:10-11; James 1:2; James 1:4; 1 Peter 1:6-7).

HELP LORD / PSALMS 12:1-8

(KJV) Psalms 12:1-8

Help, Lord; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men. 2 They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. 3 The Lord shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things: 4 Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us? 5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. 6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. 8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

HELP LORD / PSALMS 12:1-8

This psalm describes a time when those who are committed to God are deeply troubled by the ungodly activity of wicked people. God’s people have always experienced this, but in the last days before Christ returns these conditions will be very common and deeply rooted among humankind (1 Timothy 4:1). However, Christ’s followers have the assurance that God’s power and presence will protect and encourage them when evil is at its worst (Psalms 12:5). God will “keep us safe and protect us from such people forever” (Psalms 12:7; 1 Peter 1:5).

The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

THOSE WHO LOVE VIOLENCE HIS SOUL HATES / PALMS 11:5

Because the Lord is compassionate and “loves justice” (Psalms 11:7), He despises those who participate or take pleasure in violence. This is a sure warning to believers today who open themselves up to the harm that can often and easily come through the entertainment media. As we lower our guard, an appetite slowly builds for actions and principles that God condemns (Luke 23:35; Romans 1:32).

(KJV) Psalms 11:1-7

In the Lord put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? 2 For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may privily shoot at the upright in heart. 3 If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do? 4 The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord’s throne is in heaven: his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men. 5 The Lord trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. 6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup. 7 For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.

IN THE LORD I TAKE REFUGE / PSALMS 11:1-7

This psalm challenges those who are tempted to compromise, or give in, when Biblical principles are being pushed aside or ignored (Psalms 11:1-3). People who are faithful will trust God to help them walk a path of godliness when it is not popular (Psalms 11:1) and when the “foundations are being destroyed” (Psalms 11:3). They have the confidence that “upright men will see His face” (Psalms 11:7; 16:8-11; 17:15; 23:6).

FROM AMBUSH HE MURDERS THE INNOCENT / PSALMS 10:8-10

(KJV) Psalms 10:8-10

He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. 9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net. 10 He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

FROM AMBUSH HE MURDERS THE INNOCENT / PSALMS 10:8-10

  1. Out of greed (Psalms 10:3), such people tap the poor, the young, the careless and the thoughtless within their nets. They are clever as they advertise the benefits and pleasures of their products, but their plan is a trap that will cause much suffering to those who partake of their evil deeds (Psalms 10:9). 
  2. These wicked and arrogant individuals seem to be unaware of their moral accountability to God (Psalms 10:3-4, 11, 13); but their final end will be destruction (Psalms 73). God’s people should not be involved in anything that would harm another human being. In compassion, the righteous are to be fully occupied with helping others, especially encouraging them to avoid harmful temptations.

(KJV) Psalms 10:2

The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.

IN HIS ARROGANCE THE WICKED MAN HUNTS / PSALMS 10:2

This psalmist grieves over the pride and success of cruel and wicked people (Psalms 10:3-11).

  1. He prays that God will overthrow the wicked, help the helpless and reign as king forever in order that sin and terror be removed from the earth (Psalms 10:12-18). 
  2. While Christ’s followers must be especially concerned that wicked people turn to God, they must also understand that sin and cruelty will never be completely crushed, nor will truth and justice fully prevail, until Christ returns to destroy all evil (Revelation 19:11 -20:10). Until then, their prayer must be that God will soon abolish evil, that Christ will be crowned King forever and that sin and sorrow will cease (Revelation 19 – 22).

DO YOU STAND FAR OFF? / PSALMS 10:1-18

This prayer is a cry to understand why God delays His justice (the cry of those killed for their faith in Christ in Revelation 6:9; Revelation 6:10) and allows wicked people to succeed. Our present age seems to be filled with injustice and all sorts of evil, and God often seems to “stand far off,” letting the ungodly go their own way without being punished. While God’s people should continue to pray that He will stop evil and suffering, they can rest assured that a day of justice and judgment is coming. Until then, the Lord will lift up those who trust Him (Psalms 10:17-18).

For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.

THE NEEDY WILL NOT ALWAYS BE FORGOTTEN / PSALMS 9:18

God takes special care of those who are poor, disadvantaged and troubled among His people (Psalms 9:9-10, 12). God promises not to abandon them (Psalms 9:10), but to hear their prayers (Psalms 9:12) and fulfill their hopes in His perfect timing (Psalms 9:18). We also have a part in meeting others’ needs.
