(KJV) Leviticus 1:3

If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord.

The Hebrew term for burnt offering means “that which goes up” to God. The entire offering was burned up, representing the fact that true worship involves complete surrender to God. At the same time, forgiveness was involved (Leviticus 1:4). Before worshipers could devote themselves to God, they had to be spiritually cleansed from sin (Matthew 5:23-24). According to the writer of Hebrews, Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the burnt offering (Hebrews 10:5-10).

(KJV) Leviticus 1:2

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the Lord, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.

The noun “offering” (Hebrew corban) is related to the verb that means “to draw near.” So, an offering was a gift that people “brought near” or approached God within order to enjoy His fellowship and receive His blessing (Psalms 73:28). 

1. Five offerings are described in Leviticus 1-7; the burnt offerings (Leviticus 1:3-17), the grain offering (Leviticus 2:1-16), the fellowship offering (Leviticus 3:1-17), the sin offering (Leviticus 4) and the guilt offering (Leviticus 5:14 – 6:7; 7:1-7).
2. Worshipers presented offerings for several reasons: (a) to express thanks and faith, (b) to renew their relationship with God, (c) to deepen their deduction to the Lord or (d) to ask for forgiveness. In a sense, offerings were prayers in action (Psalms 116:17; Hosea 14:2; Hebrews 13:15).
3. In many cases, an offering involved an animal sacrifice (Leviticus 9:8).
4.  These offerings taught Israel that: (a) Humans are basically sinful. On our own, we will always oppose God and pull toward self-dependence. Because of this, humankind deserves the most extreme penalty for its rebellion against God: death. (b) Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness (Leviticus 17:11; Hebrews 9:22). (c) Atonement, or “covering,” for sin must be made by substitution because people are not worthy or able to cover their own debt to God (Leviticus 1:4; 17:11). (d) God is holy. This purity, completeness, perfection and separation from all evil means that God must regulate and direct every area of human life (Leviticus 10:3) so that humankind is not consumed by His wrath. (e) God desires to be gracious, to forgive and to have a personal relationship with all people (Exodus 34:6-7).
5. In order for an offering to be acceptable to God, there had to be genuine repentance (deep sorrow and regret for doing wrong, determination to give up – or turn from – the wrong attitudes or behaviors and to turn toward God). Each heart must have a sincere commitment to humility, righteousness (right living and a right relationship with God), justice and compassion (Leviticus 23:27-29; Isaiah 1:11-17; Micah 6:6-8).

(KJV) Leviticus 2:11

No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire.

Yeast and honey were forbidden on the altar because they were used to cause the fermentation process. Fermentation, which involves change, breaking down or decay, often symbolized evil (Exodus 13:7; Mark 8:15).
