SEVEN FULL WEEKS / LEVITICUS 23:15

The Feast of Weeks (Deuteronomy 16:10), also called the Feast of Pentecost (meaning “the fiftieth day”), occurred at the end of the wheat harvest, fifty days after the Feast of Firstfruits (Leviticus 23:16). On this day, God’s people gave thanks for His abundant gifts of food and everything else He provided for living. It was on the day of Pentecost that God fulfilled His promise (Joel 2:28-29; Acts 2:16-18) to “pour out” the Holy Spirit on His followers (Acts 2:1-4).

(KJV) Leviticus 23:10

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest:

FIRST GRAIN YOU HARVEST / LEVITICUS 23:10

The Feast of Firstfruits (Leviticus 23:10-14), which occurred in connection with the Feast of Unleavened Bread, acknowledged that all crops and produce came from the Lord. The first fruits (the first and best of the harvest, not the leftovers) were to be dedicated to God. For New Testament believers, this illustrates how our entire lives must be dedicated to God. That is because Christians are the “first fruits” of Christ’s work of salvation (James 1:18; Revelation 14:4).

APPOINTED FEASTS OF THE LORD / LEVITICUS 23:2

(KJV) Leviticus 23:2

 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the Lord, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.

APPOINTED FEASTS OF THE LORD / LEVITICUS 23:2

This chapter describes Israel’s sacred days of celebration and worship. These days were symbols of their relationship with God and how He had set them apart for His purposes. The feasts also represented the fact that the Israelites and all they possessed belonged to God. There were two cycles of these feasts: a weekly cycle and an annual cycle. All of these sacred days involved feasts except for the Day of Atonement, which was the one day that the law required fasting (going without food to focus on spiritual matters). These festivals helped to tie their worship to the events in their daily lives. Godly worship must touch and influence every aspect of a believer’s life today as well.

HAS A DEFECT / LEVITICUS 21:17

(KJV) Leviticus 21:17

Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations that hath any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.

HAS A DEFECT / LEVITICUS 21:17

None of Aaron’s descendants who had any sort of physical defect or flaw could serve as priests and present offerings for the people (Leviticus 21:17-23). While this may seem unfair or seem to show favoritism, it was meant to be a physical illustration of a more important spiritual point. (This was true of most issues surrounding the priesthood.)

  1. Complete health and physical wholeness represented God’s purpose that priests be examples of the full life God intended for his people. Being free from physical limitations would allow them to perform their duties more effectively. However, those who were disqualified from serving as ministers could still eat the most holy food (Leviticus 21:22). God was showing that they too had a part in the full salvation and relationship provided by God’s covenant.
  2. God’s requirement for physical perfection in the priesthood was an illustration of Christ’s moral perfection (Hebrews 9:13-14). It is also a physical picture of God’s spiritual requirements for New Testament leaders, who are not required to be physically flawless but must be blameless and “above reproach” in a spiritual sense (1 Timothy 3:2).

They shall not take a wife that is a whore, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

NOT MARRY WOMEN DEFILED BY PROSTITUTION / LEVITICUS 21:7

Priests could not marry women who had behaved in sexually immoral ways or even those who had been divorced. They were to marry only virgins or widows of priests (Leviticus 21:13-15; Ezekiel 44:22). God wanted His spiritual leaders to serve as examples of His highest ideals for marriage and the family. In the New Testament, God also requires those who serve in church leadership to be models of moral purity and faithfulness to their families.

HOLY TO THEIR GOD / LEVITICUS 21:6

(KJV) Leviticus 21:6

They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

HOLY TO THEIR GOD / LEVITICUS 21:6

Priests were to be separated from all ungodly customs. They were to live pure and blameless lives that honored God and followed His plans. Failure to do so would “profane the name of their God.” To “profane” means to stain, dishonor or treat the Lord’s name as unholy. It is no different for spiritual leaders today. God expects pastors and other church leaders to live in a way that honors Him. He commands them to show evidence of holiness by living lives that are pure and separated from evil. This is their example of righteousness to those they lead (1 Timothy 3:1-7; 4:12).

Leviticus 21 describes the qualifications and standards for those who were to serve as ministers for God’s people. They were to be examples of godliness both in their ceremonial duties and in their personal character and conduct. For this reason, God held them to a higher standard than was required for the rest of God’s covenant people.

Loving one’s neighbor included loving people of different backgrounds and nationalities. Love will show expression of kindness to those who come to live in one’s community. Jesus emphasizes the same thing in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). God Himself loved His people while they were aliens (separated from Him). He expects us to do the same. God wants to bless all the nations of the world through His people (Genesis 12:3; John 3:16).

TWO KINDS OF MATERIAL / LEVITICUS 19:19

 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

TWO KINDS OF MATERIAL / LEVITICUS 19:19

Some of the laws in Leviticus applied only to Israel under the old covenant (Leviticus 19:19-25) – before Jesus came to die for our sins and fulfill God’s perfect plan of spiritual salvation. Other laws still apply to those under the new covenant (Leviticus 19:11-18, 26, 31; Matthew 5:17). Those laws that applied only to ancient Israel were to keep them from being absorbed into surrounding cultures that did not walk in holiness. For example, the ban on mixing two kinds of materials probably was based on the fact that pagan priests attempted to practice sorcery by mixing different types of fabrics into their garments. The verse as a whole communicates the principle of uncompromised or “unmixed” purity.
