A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED / ISAIAH 53:9

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:9

And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED / ISAIAH 53:9

This phrase gives us the hint that Jesus Christ would die alongside the wicked (the two thieves executed beside Him), or that the Roman soldiers planned to bury Him with those criminals. Yet, as prophesied here (“and with the rich in His death”), He was buried in a rich man’s tomb (Matthew 27:57-60). Then again, the verse may simply be pointing out that although Jesus was sinless and did not deserve to die, He took our place and suffered death just like all other humans who die as a consequence of sin.

LIKE A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER / ISAIAH 53:7

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:7

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

LIKE A LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER / ISAIAH 53:7

Jesus endured His suffering for us patiently and voluntarily (1 Peter 1; Revelation 5:6). He loves us completely and unconditionally and He considered His suffering and sacrifice completely worth the cost because it opened the way for us to have a personal relationship with Him (Hebrews 12:2).

WE ALL, LIKE SHEEP, HAVE GONE ASTRAY ISAIAH 53:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:6

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

WE ALL, LIKE SHEEP, HAVE GONE ASTRAY ISAIAH 53:6

Part of humankind’s stubborn and rebellious nature includes the pull toward things that dishonor God. Individuals prefer to follow their own selfish ways rather than obey God’s commands and instructions (Romans 6:1). Living to please ourselves rather than living to please God is direct rebellion against Him. This is one of the primary definitions of sin. We are all guilty. Therefore, we all needed Christ to die in our place. He is the only one who ever followed God’s purposes completely, resisting all selfish desires (Philippians 2:3-5). For that reason, His is the only life worthy to pay the full penalty for sin. In order to receive the benefits of His sacrifice, we must admit our sin, accept Christ’s forgiveness, give up our own way and submit our lives to Christ’s leadership and to God’s purposes.

PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS – BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED / ISAIAH 53:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS – BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED / ISAIAH 53:5

PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS

To “transgress” means to cross a line or step outside of a boundary, as in violating a law or committing a crime. All humanity has violated God’s perfect law, and our crime is actually against Him. Our defiance and opposition to most severe penalty: death (Romans 6:23) and eternal separation from God. Christ was crucified (executed by being nailed to an upright cross until He died) because God allowed Him to take our place, as our substitute, and suffer the death penalty that our sin deserved (Psalms 22:16; Zechariah 12:10; John 19:34). By admitting our sin and accepting Christ’s sacrifice as our own, we can receive forgiveness and have peace with God (Romans 5:1).

BY HIS WOUNDS WE ARE HEALED

This healing refers to a complete salvation – a gift from God that brings us into a relationship with Him – with all its benefits, spiritual and physical. Sickness and disease are the result of sin entering the world through humankind’s rebellion against God and of Satan’s activity in the world. John, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, wrote that “the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8). Christ gave gifts of healing to His church (1 Corinthians 12:9) and commanded His followers to heal the sick as part of their endeavor to promote God’s kingdom purposes and spread His message of complete salvation around the world (Luke 9:1-2, 6; 10:1, 8-9, 19).

TOOK UP OUR INFIRMITIES / ISAIAH 53:4

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:4

Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

TOOK UP OUR INFIRMITIES / ISAIAH 53:4

An infirmity usually refers to a physical weakness or illness. This verse is quoted in Matthew 8:17 with reference to Jesus’ ministry of healing – both physically and spiritually. Jesus took our place and our punishment when He suffered and died to pay the full penalty for the sins of humankind. His suffering and sacrifice were so perfect and complete that they provide for deliverance and relief from our sicknesses and diseases as well as from our sins. For this reason, His followers should pray for physical healing.

DESPISED AND REJECTED – A MAN OF SORROWS / ISAIAH 53:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:3

He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

DESPISED AND REJECTED – A MAN OF SORROWS / ISAIAH 53:3

DESPISED AND REJECTED

Instead of being accepted by His own people, Israel, Jesus Christ would be hated and rejected, especially by Israel’s leaders (Isaiah 52:14; Matthew 26:57). In fact, Jesus and His purposes often have been hated and rejected throughout history; and His message and followers will face even more intense persecution before Christ returns.

A MAN OF SORROWS

Jesus’ mission would involve great pain, suffering, disappointment and grief because of the sins (rebellion against God and His ways) and unbelief of humankind. All who follow Jesus will also experience a degree of suffering and rejection (Matthew 10:22; John 15:18; 2 Corinthians 11:23).

ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND – NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US / ISAIAH 53:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:2

For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND – NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US / ISAIAH 53:2

ROOT OUT OF DRY GROUND

Jesus not only had humble beginnings, but He came to earth at a time of great spiritual dryness. This is part of the reason John the Baptist began his God-given mission to awaken people – calling them to spiritual awareness – shortly before Jesus began His public ministry.

NO BEAUTY OR MAJESTY TO ATTRACT US

People would not be drawn to Jesus Christ because of His physical appearance or His position in life. These things would not bring genuine devotion to the Lord. God’s greatest concern is always for a person’s character and obedience – how much he or she is willing to pursue God’s ways – not one’s earthly status or physical beauty (1 Samuel 16:7; Luke 22:24-30).

WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR MESSAGE / ISAIAH 53:1

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Isaiah 53:1

Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR MESSAGE / ISAIAH 53:1

Because the Servant-Messiah (Christ) suffered and was crucified – unjustly executed by being nailed to a cross – many people have considered God’s message unreasonable and difficult to accept (John 12:38; Romans 10:16). Some believe Christ died for their sins but find it difficult to accept the whole message of what Christ’s death accomplished for us (Isaiah 53:4-5; Matthew 8:17; Acts 5:12-16). Perhaps they believe that the full life Christ offers seems too good to be true, or maybe they feel completely unworthy of His forgiveness. Others, however, are unwilling to surrender their own desires and goals in life to God and His purposes. These unnecessary doubts and reservations keep people from experiencing the complete and fulfilling life God desires for them (John 10:10).

DO NOT LET SIN REIGN / ROMANS 6:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 6:12

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

DO NOT LET SIN REIGN / ROMANS 6:12

Since sin has been removed from the place where it once ruled, the believer must continually resist it effort to regain control. Sin attempts to reign primarily through the desires and temptations involving the body. You must resist these desires by relying on the spiritual strength available to you through Christ. By doing so, you can say “no” (Titus 2:12) to the desires and lusts of your sinful nature that try to fulfill themselves through your body (Romans 6:12). You must refuse to give in to these desires by the things you do, see and think about so they cannot control your behavior (Romans 6:13). Instead, you must present your body and whole personality as a willing servant to God so you can fulfill His desires and purposes and do what He says is right (Romans 6:13-19).

COUNT YOURSELVES DEAD TO SIN / ROMANS 6:11

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 6:11

Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

COUNT YOURSELVES DEAD TO SIN / ROMANS 6:11

The basic principle in Romans 6 is how the believer is united with Christ in both His death and life. If you are a true follower of Christ, you have died to sin – a fact that is reflected in several areas of your Christian experience.

  1. You died to sin in God’s view. You are considered by God to have died with Christ on the cross and to have been raised up to new life through His resurrection (Romans 6: 5-10).
  2. You died to sin when you received Christ and were spiritually “born again” by the power of the Holy spirit. As a result, you have been given Christ’s power to resist sin (Romans 6:14-18), to “put to death the misdeeds of the body” (Romans 8:13) and to live a new life in obedience to Go (Romans 6:5-14, 18, 22).
  3. You died to sin in water baptism as you identified with Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection and committed yourself to reject sin and to live for Christ (Romans 6:3-5; 6:4).

These areas of the Christian experience mark the first stage that shows your life is dead to sin and alive to God. But in order to experience ongoing victory over sin, you must consider yourself dead to sin, not only in principle but also in practice. What does it mean to be dead to sin?

  1. Consider the fact that if something is dead, it is not active or responsive. Being dead to sin means that the influences and temptations that may have one caused you to give in to sin no longer have control of you because you are unresponsive to these things.
  2. Developing this type of spiritual resistance requires a deliberate and willful choice not to feed or exercise your sinful nature. It means refusing to carelessly expose yourself to those activities and areas of life that can easily trouble or temp you.
  3. Instead, you must feed yourself spiritually and exercise godly disciplines that bring you closer to Christ and build your strength to resist Satan’s temptations and the sinful tendencies of your own human nature. These spiritual disciplines include time in prayer, God’s Word, worship, Christian companionship and acts of service.

Dying to sin means refusing to let sin have its way so you can offer yourself fully to God – spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally – for His honor and purposes (Romans 6:13).
