I WAS NOT DISOBEDIENT / ACTS 26:19

Paul’s spiritual conversion (salvation, life transformation) to faith in Christ occurred on his journey to Damascus. From that moment on, he recognized Jesus as Savior and Lord – the Forgiver of his sins and Leader of his life – and dedicated his life to obeying the Lord (Romans 1:5).

PAUL’S GOD-GIVEN COMMISSION / ACTS 26:17-18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Acts 26:17-18 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

PAUL’S GOD-GIVEN COMMISSION / ACTS 26:17-18

This verse is a classic statement of the effects Jesus desires from the preaching of His message to spiritually lost people (those who have not yet received His forgiveness and a renewed personal relationship with Him).

  1. “Open their eyes.” Those who do not know Christ are blinded by Satan to the reality of their spiritual lostness and future destruction. They do not comprehend the truth of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4). Preaching about Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit is the only thing that will expose their true condition and “open their eyes” of understanding (2 Corinthians 4:5; Ephesians 1:18).
  2. “Turn them from…the power of Satan to God.” Satan is the ruler of this world full of people who choose to go their own way. All who have not surrendered their lives to Christ’s authority are under Satan’s control and enslaved to his power. Satan’s work and influence are evident in all who follow the ways of the world and “in those who are disobedient” (Ephesians 2:2). Preaching about Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit will rescue men and women from Satan’s power and bring them into Christ’s kingdom (Colossians 1:13; 1 Peter 2:9).
  3. “That they may receive forgiveness of sins.” Forgiveness is only possible because of Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, which paid the full penalty for our sins. When people hear this message, they can respond in faith by accepting Christ’s sacrifice for themselves and by yielding control of their lives to Him.
  4. “A place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” Those who are forgiven of sin, freed from the power of Satan, and spiritually renewed by the Holy Spirit are then set apart from the world and reserved for God’s purposes. Through the further experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit, they are empowered for those purposes as they grow deeper in their relationship with Christ.

EVERY LIVING THING … WAS WIPED OUT … ONLY NOAH WAS LEFT / GENESIS 7:23

(KJV) Genesis 7:23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

EVERY LIVING THING … WAS WIPED OUT … ONLY NOAH WAS LEFT / GENESIS 7:23

The description of the flood reveals both judgment and salvation.

  1. The total destruction of all human life outside the ark was necessary in order to wipe out the extreme moral corruption and to give the human race a new chance for a right relationship with God.
  2. The apostle Peter uses Noah’s salvation through the floodwaters as a symbol of Christian baptism (1 Peter 3:21).

THE GREAT DEEP BURST FORTH / GENESIS 7:11-12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 7:11-12

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

THE GREAT DEEP BURST FORTH / GENESIS 7:11-12

Two earth-shattering events caused the flood. The first was the eruption of huge underground reservoirs, or pockets, of water, perhaps caused by earthquakes and tidal waves. The second was the forty days of torrential, or violent downpour of, rain (Genesis 7:12).

  1. As a result, all living creatures outside the ark that normally lived on land dies, both humans and animals (Genesis 7:21-22; Matthew 24:37-39; 1 Peter 3:20; 2 Peter 2:5).
  2. Water rose so high that it covered “all the high mountains under the entire heavens” (Genesis 7:19-20). This means that the entire earth, not just part of it, was covered with water (2 Peter 3:6). The amount of water did not even begin to decrease until after 150 days (Genesis 7:24). Noah’s ark finally came to rest on one of the mountains of Ararat (Armenia), which was 500 miles from where it started (Genesis 8:4).
  3. The earth dried up, and Noah left the ark 377 days after the flood began (Genesis 8:13-14).
  4. The apostle Peter states that the world that existed before the flood was “destroyed” (2 Peter 3:6). This suggests that the earth and its surface underwent a total change, both physically and geologically, and it became the earth that now exists.

THE FLOODWATERS CAME ON THE EARTH / GENESIS 7:6

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Genesis 7:6

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

THE FLOODWATERS CAME ON THE EARTH / GENESIS 7:6

The flood was God’s judgment on the whole earth for humanity’s ungodliness, rebellion and unrepentance. In the New Testament, Peter refers to the flood to remind believers that God will again judge the whole world at the end of time. That judgment will be by fire (2 Peter 3:10). At that time, God will unleash His wrath (justified anger) on the ungodly in a way unequaled in history (Matthew 24:21). God calls believers today, as He did Noah, to warn the ungodly, urging them to repent (turn from and give up sin) and turn to God because He wants to save them. He is the only one who can save them.”

LEADS TO PEACE / ROMANS 14:19-21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:19-21

Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.

21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.

LEADS TO PEACE / ROMANS 14:19-21

Believers should put forth every effort to edify or lift up other believers at all times. The food served at a meal could be offensive to some who hold to a ceremonial law. Paul discusses this issue again in 1 Corinthians 8. A Christian who loves his brother will personally avoid what may cause another person to be led into sin and “to fall.”

NOT A MATTER OF EATING OR DRINKING / ROMANS 14:17-18

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:17-18

For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

NOT A MATTER OF EATING OR DRINKING / ROMANS 14:17-18

Being overly concerned with trivial matters is to miss the primary purpose of God’s kingdom and the true meaning of Christian living. But notice that the issues addressed in this passage deal mainly with outward or physical issues such as eating or observing certain days. Often, such passages dealing with Christian freedom and liberty (1 Corinthians 8-10) are taken out of context to justify behavior that can bring harm to the mind and spirit. Food goes in and out of the body and has little, if anything, to do with spiritual matters. However, when people try to apply this principle of liberty and non-judgment to morally questionable activities and behaviors that actually do affect the mind and spirit, they are seriously missing the point (Colossians2:20, 23). For example, certain forms of entertainment are often presented as matters of personal choice and conscience and is some cases that may be true. But such activities do not necessarily fit into the same category as those described in these passages. Many types of entertainment contain sexually suggestive images, obscene language, and crude humor, which affect the mind and the spirit. God’s Word addresses these issues in an entirely different fashion than those things that go in and out of the body that do not affect the mind or spirit (Ephesians 5:3-7; Colossians 3:5). Exposing ourselves to these types of entertainment can be destructive spiritually because the images and language go into the mind, corrupt the spirit, and can affect behavior in a negative way. This behavior gives approval to ungodly conduct and can easily mislead others who look to us for an example of acceptable Christian conduct. Again, Paul’s strongest warning is to the person whose faith and conscience allow him or her to take greater liberty in their actions – “Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself be what he approves” (Romans 14:22; 1 Corinthians 8-10)

STOP PASSING JUDGMENT / ROMANS 14:13

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:13

Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

STOP PASSING JUDGMENT / ROMANS 14:13

Notice that from the start of this Romans 14 (and Romans 15) Paul addresses his remarks more to those whose faith allows them to take greater liberty on matters of choice. Such people are “not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.” They are to use their freedom in a way that will benefit others (1 Corinthians 10:23-33). Both those who take certain liberties and those who place certain restrictions on themselves should hold back from criticizing and judging each other. We must keep in mind that we will all give account to God for our own conduct (Romans 4:11-12). Though we must hold back from judging each other in trivial matters, Christians should consider how to encourage each other to be more like Christ in issues concerning faith, Biblical teaching and morals (Hebrews 10:24). This involves sincerely evaluating (1 Thessalonians 5:21; 1 John 4:1), correcting and rebuking one another in love and humility (Luke 17:3). When necessary, it means exercising church discipline toward serious moral and spiritual offenders (1 Corinthians 5:12-13; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 14; 1 Timothy 5:20-21; 2 Timothy 2:24-26, 4:2).

CONSIDERS ONE DAY MORE SACRED THAN ANOTHER / ROMANS 14:5

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:5

One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

CONSIDERS ONE DAY MORE SACRED THAN ANOTHER / ROMANS 14:5

This probably refers to the special festivals of the Old Testament ceremonial law. Some Christians apparently still regarded these days as particularly holy (reserved for God) and still having spiritual benefit. Others did not give special attention to these days, holding the view that all days present equally significant opportunities to honor and serve God. Note that in his answer, Paul does not attempt to deny God’s principle of setting aside one day in seven as a special day of rest and worship (Matthew 12:1). God Himself set aside this day (Genesis 2:2-3; Exodus 20:11; 31:17; Isaiah 58:13-14). In the New Testament, the first day of the week is recognized as having a special significance because of Jesus’ resurrection (Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2; Revelation 1:10).

EAT EVERYTHING … EATS ONLY VEGETABLES / ROMANS 14:2

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Romans 14:2

For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

EAT EVERYTHING … EATS ONLY VEGETABLES / ROMANS 14:2

A number of believers in Rome were divided over a debatable issue: some were committed to eating only vegetables, while others were eating vegetables and all other foods, including meat. Paul states that eating in and of itself is not a moral matter, but that one’s personal attitude about what to eat could lead to unjustly criticizing one another. Throughout this section, “faith” is used in the sense of confidence or assurance. Whatever actions a Christian takes, he or she should be sure of doing what God considers best for them and in the best interests of others. (1 Corinthians 8).
