BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE / MARK 1:4

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE / MARK 1:4

Repentance is turning toward the opposite direction or making a complete change. In spiritual terms and in relation to God, it means to admit one’s sin, turn from one’s own way, surrender to God and begin following his purposes (Matthew 3:2). John’s New Testament message, which focused on repentance, was much like the preaching of the Old Testament prophets (Jeremia 15:19; Ezekiel 18:30, 32; Hosea 3:4-5). John’s practice of baptizing those who came to him in repentance (Acts 19:4) was so characteristic of his ministry that be became known as “the Baptist” or “the Baptizer” (the word translated “baptize” means “to immerse”). John immersed people in water as an outward sign of inner spiritual cleansing, which was relevant only if a person had truly turned from sin and devoted his or her life to God. The baptism was not the main issue in receiving forgiveness for offenses against God; it was an important act but only symbolic of a person’s heart commitment. True repentance is what enables a person to receive God’s gracious gift of forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ. After Jesus’ death and resurrection, baptism became more important because it was a sign of identifying with Christ in His death, burial (being immersed in the water) and resurrection (rising up to live a new and spiritually transformed life; Acts 22:16; Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12). God always forgives those who truly repent and turn toward Him.

THE LORD MADE A COVENANT WITH ABRAM / GENESIS 15:17-21

(KJV) Genesis 15:17-21

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. 18 In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

THE LORD MADE A COVENANT WITH ABRAM / GENESIS 15:17-21

A covenant is a formal “life agreement.” Two or more individuals or parties commit themselves to each other with various promises and obligations. The process of making a covenant is described in Genesis 15:9-17.

  1. It consisted of killing certain animals, cutting them in half and then arranging the halves opposite each other (Genesis 15:10). Then the two individuals or parties making the agreement would walk between the two halves, symbolizing that if they broke the agreement they would die just like the animals (Genesis 15:17; Jeremiah 34:18). The “smoking firepot with a blazing torch” represented God’s presence (Genesis 15:17; Exodus 3:2; 14:24).
  2. Although a covenant usually included responsibilities for both parties (Genesis 17:9-14), in this situation only God’s presence passed between the pieces of the sacrificed animal (Genesis 15:17). God alone made the promises and determined the obligations of the covenant. Abram had only to accept them in obedient faith (Genesis 17:2).

God told Abram that his descendants would go into Egypt and be enslave, or held under the control of others, for 400 years. This figure is a round number; the actual number was 430years (Exodus 12:40).

HE BELIEVED … HE CREDITED IT TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS /GENESIS 15:6

(KJV) Genesis 15:6

And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

HE BELIEVED … HE CREDITED IT TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS /GENESIS 15:6

For the first time in God’s Word, faith and righteousness are mentioned together.

  1. In the Old Testament, faith implied two things: (a) “trust in” or “reliance on” and (b) “loyalty to” or “faithfulness.” The word translated “believe” (Hebrew ‘aman) means to demonstrate trust by continually acting in obedient faith. Thus, true faith will prove itself through practical action. This was the kind of faith Abram had. He was devoted to God and proved it by obeying God and submitting to His plans.
  2. God saw in Abram’s heart an attitude of faith and credited, or accepted, it as righteousness. The term “righteousness” means being in a right relationship to God and His will (Genesis 6:9; Job 15:14-16). In addition, God made a covenant with Abram, promising protection and reward (Genesis 15:1), many descendants (Genesis 15:5) and the promise of the land (Genesis 15:7).
  3. Under the new covenant (God’s plan and promos to save people from sin through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ), receiving God’s blessing and having a right relationship with Him also require faith. This is a foundational truth in the New Testament (Romans 4:3; Galatians 3:6; James 2:23).

After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

YOUR SHIELD, YOUR VERY GREAT REWARD / GENESIS 15:1

After his battle with the king, Abram became anxious and afraid. God reassured Abram in a vision that He would continue to bless and protect him. But Abram was concerned that he did not have an heir (Genei 15:2), so he suggested that he adopt one of his servants. God rejected the idea, promising Abram that he and his wife, Sarai, would still have a son (Genesis 11:30). Many more descendants would come through that son. What made Abram great was that he believed God. That kind of faith is why God considered Abram a righteous person (Genesis 15:6).

JESUS GREW IN WISDOM / LUKE 2:52

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

JESUS GREW IN WISDOM / LUKE 2:52

This is all the Bible tells us about Jesus’ teen and young adult years. Between Luke 2:52 and Luke 3:1, approximately eighteen years of Jesus’ life passed. Yet, this brief statement gives us a good overview of Jesus’ overall development. From other passages describing the later years of Jesus’ life, we get a further glimpse of His life. From Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3, we learn that He grew up in a large family, that His father was a carpenter, and that Jesus learned the trade. Since Joseph is never mentioned again in the Gospels (the accounts of Jesus’ life according to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), it is likely that Joseph died before Jesus began His public ministry and that Jesus provided for His mother and younger brothers and sisters. The carpenter’s trade included household repairs, furniture making and constructing tools used for agriculture, such as plows and yokes. During all these years, we are told that He became a very well-rounded individual, developing mentally (wisdom), physically (stature), socially and spiritually (in favor with men and God) – fully conscious that God was His Father (Luke 2:49).

I HAD TO BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE / LUKE 2:49-51

I HAD TO BE IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE / LUKE 2:49-51

Jesus was not dyeing His parents; this was a time when His higher mission in life took priority over what was convenient. He had come to earth to fulfill His heavenly Father’s purposes; that was His primary duty. Notice how Jesus contrasted “my Father” (God) with Mary’s “Your father” (Luke 2:48). This was not a matter of disrespect because even at age 12 Jesus was aware of His unique relationship to God. Still, He obeyed His parents when they came to take Him home (Luke 2:51).

ANNA … WORHIPED / LUKE 2:36-38

And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

ANNA … WORHIPED / LUKE 2:36-38

Anna was a prophetess who, like Simeon, had hoped and prepared for a long time for the coming of Christ. She remained a widow for many years, devoting herself completely to God and “fasting and praying” night and day. The Bible teaches that being single can be a great blessing and benefit in serving God. The missionary Paul states in one of his New Testament letters that those who are unmarried have greater opportunity to focus their concerns and efforts on God’s purposes.
