God used wicked nations to bring His judgment on Jerusalem (Isaiah 10:5-6; Habakkuk 1:6). In their greed for wealth and power, however, these nations went too far. Now God would judge these evil nations for their selfish pride and disregard for God.

VERY JEALOUS FOR JERUSALEM / ZECHARIAH 1:14

So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

VERY JEALOUS FOR JERUSALEM / ZECHARIAH 1:14

God’s deep love was the reason He chose to bless and work through Jerusalem and the nation of Israel. That love, however, was not meant just for the Israelites. It was always God’s desire to reach out to all people. God planned to bless all the families of the earth through Abram, Abraham, and his descendants (Genesis 12:3). The Lord would use the nation of Israel (which came through Abraham) to fulfill His plan of spiritual salvation and provide a way for people of all nations to receive forgiveness for sins and a personal relationship with God.

ANGEL OF THE LORD SAID / ZECHARIAH 1:12

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Zechariah 1:12

Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

ANGEL OF THE LORD SAID / ZECHARIAH 1:12

The rider on the red horse is now identified as “the angel of the LORD.” (When this specific phrase is used in the Old Testament, it  usually is referring to a physical appearance of Christ before He came into the world by birth). This angel was interceding (pleading a case for others) on behalf of Israel and Jerusalem to bring an end to the 70 years of God’s judgment on Jerusalem and the temple, which were both destroyed in 586 B.C. The rebuilding of the temple was finished in 516 B.C., exactly 70 years later. It is likely that the angel of the Lord is Christ (Exodus 23:20-21; Isaiah 63:9) because He is still the One who speaks in our defense (1 John 2:1).

The interpreting angel continued to explain things to Zechariah (Zechariah 1:3-14, 19; 2:3; 4:1, 4-5; 5:5, 10; 6:4-5). This angel, however, is not the same as the angel of the Lord.

I HAD A VISION / ZECHARIAH 1:8-11

(KJV) Zechariah 1:8-11

I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees that were in the bottom; and behind him were there red horses, speckled, and white.9 Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be. 10 And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the Lord hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. 11 And they answered the angel of the Lord that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

I HAD A VISION / ZECHARIAH 1:8-11

A vision is different from a dream. When a person dreams, he is asleep; when a person has a vision, he is awake. Therefore, Zechariah probably was full awake when he saw these images. In February of 519 B.C. God gave Zechariah a vision of a man on a red horse in a grove of myrtle trees, with various other horses behind him. Some believe this was an appearance of Christ as “the angel of the LORD” (Zechariah 1:11-12). A different angel interpreted the vision by explaining that these horses had observed the whole world and found it at rest and in peace (Zechariah 1:11); yet God’s people in Judah were still oppressed and insecure. The Lord would change the world situation by restoring security to His people and prospering Jerusalem and the towns of Judah (Zechariah 1:17).

DO NOT BE LIKE YOUR FOREFATHERS / ZECHARIAH 1:4

Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.

God reminds the people of how He had given their ancestors the same challenge through the earlier prophets, but they had not listened. 

  1. Because they had refused to give up their own evil ways, the forefathers missed their opportunities to respond positively to God. As a result, they suffered the results of their sin. The warnings and curses recorded in Deuteronomy 28 were fulfilled.
  2. In the same way, if we refuse to avoid the sinful pleasures that are common in the world and allow them to interfere with our relationship with God, we too will miss His plan for our lives and lose the highest blessings He has planned for us.

God’s message through Zechariah begins with a call for the people to return to God – to give up their own rebellious ways, live by God’s standards and follow His purposes. God was waiting for them to obey Him, and, as they did, He promised to bless and protect them.

In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying

IN THE EIGHTH MONTH … THE PROPHET ZECHARIAH / ZECHARIAH 1:1

In November of 520 B.C., about a month after Haggai’s second prophecy (Haggai 2:1), God inspired Zechariah, a younger man, to help Haggai encourage the people to rebuild the temple. The first six chapters contain a series of eight night visions the prophet received during the first two years of the rebuilding of the temple. These visions challenged the people to view the temple restoration as part of God’s larger plan to bring a greater restoration – a spiritual one – in the future. Christ’s first and second comings (His birth and His return to earth to defeat the forces of evil in the last days) are both included in these prophecies.

WITH GLORY AND HONOR / PSALMS 8:5

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

WITH GLORY AND HONOR / PSALMS 8:5

This psalm expressed the amazing honor that God has given to humankind. God created us for a wonderful purpose. We are not just animals nor the product of natural evolution and chance (Psalms 8:5). Rather, we are created in His image to reflect His character and fulfill His purposes. We are so valuable to God that we are the special object of His love and favor (Psalms 8:4). He has chosen us to rule over His creation (Psalms 8:6-8; Genesis 1:28; Genesis 2:15; Genesis 2:19). The fact that we hold such a favored position with God is no reason for selfish pride, but it is a reason for taking personal responsibility for the trust God has given to us. Above all, it is a reason to give thanks and honor to the Creator (Psalms 8:9).

THE SON OF MAN / PSALMS 8:3-6

In the New Testament these verses, taken from the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament), are applied to Jesus (Hebrews 2:6-8; Ephesians 1:19-22). It is only in Him that these truths are perfectly realized. He is the One who, as a representative of the human race, has full power and authority over all creation (Psalms 8:6-8; Philippians 2:10).
