TRYING TO GET THE PRIESTHOOD TOO / NUMBERS 16:10

Korah and the men thought they themselves could decide who would lead the people. God made it clear that He was in charge. Under the new covenant, God still decides the type of people who are to serve as overseers of His church. He has set certain holy standards for those who desire to serve (1 Timothy 3:1-12; 4:12-16; Titus 1:5-9). When church members ignore God’s standards for pastors and choose leadership without regard for God’s Word, they are following the same rebellious attitude of Korah and the others who stood with him. Leadership must be based on God’s revealed will for His church.

TO OPPOSE MOSES / NUMBERS 16:3

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) Numbers 16:3

And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?

TO OPPOSE MOSES / NUMBERS 16:3

The story of Korah, Dathan and Abiram involves three Levites who joined forces to get more power and a higher position for themselves as priests (Numbers 16:10). They challenged Moses’ authority. They resisted God’s command that Aaron alone was to be high priest (Numbers 16:3-11). By their actions, they were rejecting God and His revealed word about who would lead God’s people (Numbers 12:10). As a result, God sent His just condemnation (Numbers 16:31-35). The same judgment awaits all in God’s kingdom who “love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats” (Matthew 23:6).

NO PROPHECY OF SCRIPTURE – MEN SPOKE FROM GOD … BY THE HOLY SPIRIT / 2 PETER 1:20-21

START YOUR DAY RIGHT DAILY DEVOTION

(KJV) 2 Peter 1:20-21

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

NO PROPHECY OF SCRIPTURE – MEN SPOKE FROM GOD … BY THE HOLY SPIRIT / 2 PETER 1:20-21

NO PROPHECY OR SCRIPTURE

No prophecy in Scripture came about by the writer’s own ideas or reasoning, but it came from the Holy Spirit.

MEN SPOKE FROM GOD … BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

What Peter affirms here about the God-given origin and authority of the prophecy recorded in Scripture is true about all things in His written Word: “men spoke [and wrote] from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” Believers must maintain a strong uncompromising view of Holy Scripture as inspired (given directly by God through Holy Spirit-led people of His choosing) and authoritative (completely reliable, backed by solid evidence and established authority). There are several reasons for this. 

  1. It is the only way to be loyal and true to what Jesus Christ, the apostles (those He personally authorized to deliver His original message) and the Bible itself teach about Scripture (Psalms 119; John 5:47).
  2. It provides for the church a true and sure foundation for its faith, certainty of salvation and moral absolutes (standards that are true and relevant for all people in all situations for all times) as measures and directives for living and for its future hope. Without the inspired Word of God, there would be no message to preach without doubt, no sure expectancy for the baptism in the Holy Spirit and the working of miracles and no hope for Christ’s soon and certain return.
  3. It provides Bible-believing Christians with absolutes and objective truth (based on something outside of themselves) by which to judge and reject this world’s everchanging values, human philosophies and ungodly practices (Psalms 119:160).
  4. It is the foundation on which Christians will be ready to endure the extreme difficulties and deception of the last days (1 Thessalonians 2:1-12; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 3:1).
  5. It is the basis by which people will recognize the full authority and teaching of the Bible. Without this view of Scripture, their faith will be weak, and the Bible will be replaced by subjective religious experience (always changing based on the person or situation) or by independent, critical and faulty human reasoning (2 Peter 2:1-3).

WORD OF THE PROPHETS MADE MORE CERTAIN / 2 PETER 1:19

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

WORD OF THE PROPHETS MADE MORE CERTAIN / 2 PETER 1:19

Peter contrasts humanistic ideas with God’s Word (2 Peter 1:16). He testifies of the God-given origin of Scripture and affirms that all the prophecy contained in God’s Word originated from God, not from humans (2 Peter 1:21). This assures us that God’s message is infallible (incapable of mistakes or failure, never wrong, completely true and effective in its teachings) and inerrant (free from error, falsehood or deceit). Infallibility and inerrancy cannot be separated, for the inerrancy (incapable of any error) of Scripture is the result of the infallibility (incapable of mistakes or being wrong) of God Himself and His own Word. All of Scripture is true and reliable in all its teaching (2 Samuel 23:2; Jeremiah 1:7-9; 1 Corinthians 14:37).

RICH WELCOME INTO THE ETERNAL KINGDOM / 2 PETER 1:11

Because of their negligence, some Christians will barely make it into the kingdom of heaven (1 Corinthians 3:15). Other Christians, who remain firm and faithful in their spiritual growth and character, will be welcomed richly with honor (Matthew 25:21; Acts 7:55-56; 2 Timothy 4:7-8, 18).

Our faith and salvation must not be taken for granted. We must continue to persevere (continue steadfastly) in our faith and grow in our relationship with God. By diligently developing the godly character traits mentioned in 2 Peter 1:8 – which is only possible as we grow closer to Christ and rely on the holy Spirit – we will show that we are truly God’s people (Matthew 7:20; James 2:18). God’s calling is to a life of obedience and holiness (Ephesians 1:3-6, 1 Peter 1:12). Those who continue to follow Christ and grow in these disciplines will ensure their faithfulness to the end (1 Peter 1:2).

IF YOU POSSESS THESE QUALITIES IN INCREASING MEASURE / 2 PETER 1:8

(KJV) 2 Peter 1:8

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

IF YOU POSSESS THESE QUALITIES IN INCREASING MEASURE / 2 PETER 1:8

  1. Peter is not implying that a Christian has to develop these traits in a precise order, one after the other, until they reach maturity or perfection. Instead, all of these qualities are to be cultivated all together and continually.
  2. The Christian experiences (a continuous relationship with the living God) should never remain stationary or stagnant. In fact, it could be said that if a person is not growing in faith, he or she is withering and dying spiritually (John 15:2). A person certainly cannot be productive to the fullest measure in serving God apart from consistent growth in faith, character and personal companionship with Jesus (Colossians 1:10; Titus 3:14). If we ever find that we are not being effective in our service to God, we must examine our lives to ensure that we are indeed growing in the character traits mentioned in (2 Peter 1:5-8).

ADD TO YOUR FAITH / 2 PETER 1:5-7

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

ADD TO YOUR FAITH / 2 PETER 1:5-7

Peter lists the positive character traits that a Christian must develop in order to be spiritually victorious, effective and productive in serving God (2 Peter 1:8). But false teachers had been teaching just the opposite: their special knowledge made some of these traits, such as self-control, unnecessary. But Peter makes it clear that Christians are to develop these traits. The phrase “make every effort” clearly explains that believers must be actively involved in their personal Christian growth (Philippians 2:12; Philippians 2:13). Those who become Christians should make it their goal to develop in their faith the list of seven qualities included in these few verses (2 Peter 1:5-8). Note that godly characteristics do not automatically grow without our dependence on God and our diligent effort to develop them.

PARTICIPATE IN THE DIVINE NATURE / 2 PETER 1:4

Our participation in God’s very nature is another description of the new birth (being spiritually “born again,” John 3:3) by which we receive God’s life and spiritual salvation. We have the privilege of sharing in God’s nature, so we can fulfill the responsibility of conforming to His character and standard of holiness (1 Corinthians 6:19-20; Ephesians 4:24).
